Common Questions and Answers about Niacin flushing

niaspan

Avatar n tn Niacin is a B vitamin and is used in reducing cholesterol. A common side effect of Niacin is flushing. The flushing makes your skin red in color and sometimes warm to the touch. Sometimes, taking an aspirin before taking the niacin can prevent the flushing. Don't do this without discussing it with your doctor. Drinking hot drinks or alcohol can also increase the flushing, so it is best to avoid these when taking the niacin. Also, niacin should not be taken with certain drugs.

Avatar n tn I have been taking vitamins and supplements off and on for years. I did have a 'flushing' with niacin a couple of years ago and so I avoid it now. All of a suddena couple of nights ago, I got this itchy rash on the front and sides of my neck and upper chest. 4358817 tn?1353346212 As of the past month I have been noticing that my face is flushing more than usual. I am not sure if it is due to new stressors, social anxiety, or my medications (Adderall 15XR and Seroquel 50mg @ night). I have been on these two medications for the past three years with no side effects so I am pretty sure that is not the sole cause of my redness. Prior to the past month when this started, when I talked in a large group my face would turn a hint of pink and fade in a few moments.

Avatar f tn But my best lipid results ( raising HDL, lowering LDL and Lp(a) ) came from taking RX Niacin which I take with the 10 mg Crestor and 325 mg aspirin at bedtime. No problems with Niacin either.I take RX fish oil also as I am in big time prevention mode due to cardiac microvascular dysfunction.Fortunately my lipids have never been bad and my larger coronaries are clear but the lipids are only a piece of the total cardiac picture and the possible side effects of meds far outweigh my other risks.
Avatar m tn As many people know, that high of a dose of niacin can cause flushing. So it’s probably a good idea to do that under some kind of medical supervision. Steve Wright: Yeah. And if you haven’t flushed before, you’ll want somebody there. Chris Kresser: You’ll not like it. Yeah, you will want somebody there. Another study found that 2 grams per day of L-carnitine amino acid lowered Lp(a) levels by about 20% after six months.
Avatar m tn Such Kava skin reactions are believed to be that of depleted Niacin. Reside from Kava for 1-month and supplement With Niacin of the Skin Flushing Type & not The Niacin of the NON-Skin-Flushing type for 1 month.
Avatar f tn Are you taking any medications, either prescription or OTC that contain niacin? Niacin can cause flushing which happens when our blood vessels expand (which niacin is used for) and the blood rises closer to our skin which can cause really intense sensations of heat, extreme itching and a deep red "flush" of color to our skin which is usually limited to the upper portion of our bodies...........chest, neck, arms and head. I'm afraid that pretty much sums up my guesses.
Avatar m tn t have enough self control to lose any weight. I had muscle pain and memory loss with statins, flushing and finally facial swelling with niacin supplements. The memory loss was so bad, I sold my veterinary practice and retired BEFORE the lawsuit. I ran for exercise until I wore out my left knee, now I walk. Again, these labs are before any medication.
Avatar f tn I would ask your doctor if Niacin (1500 mg per day) might help you. You might be missing something that this might help. However, it does cause flushing, so a lower mg to start might be advisable, and also eat a larger dose of fibre (apples, potato -with skin, lettuce, broccoli, etc.) as it tends to constipate you a bit, but if you can find the fine balance, it might help you.
Avatar f tn Is she taking niacin? Has she been checked for blood clot? Have the checked her white blood cell count to see if she has infection? Does the warmth start in the abdomen? Have they located a source of blood loss causing the anemia? If she had low RBCs, did they check her kidney function?
Avatar m tn I have just read the success of a medical investigative team using vitamin B3 (niacin) to treat general anxiety disorder instead of the now widely criticised ansiolotics especially diazepams like Xanax. My doctors have been dismissive of B3 even for redution of cholesterol. I haven't tried them yet on this new finding.
Avatar f tn When the heat and redness comes on, it feels like a niacin flush but I am confident this is not what is happening. Typically it occurs when I am vacationing in warm places (Caribbean, California), so I thought it may be a combination of sun, heat, sunblock and perspiration. However, the same thing occurred recently while visiting family in a very chilly part of the country while I was not wearing sunblock religiously and not sweating or working out.
