Avatar f tn ve been taking 250 mg of Niacin. Based on the previous TSH told me to decrease to 150. The last dosage said to decrease to 125 mcg. Is this weird?
Avatar n tn I know someone who recovered from a stroke by taking niacin so I was taking that, but not enough to do much good. Does anyone suggest niacin? Does it have to be taken before eating food or with food? Also does anyone have anything to say about Mona vie- a drink with acai berries in it that seems to make me feel better.
Avatar n tn If you try these, you might want to reduce your niacin even further, maybe even half and please only use the safer IR niacin. Avatar m tn By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.
1135275 tn?1586565652 Simply adding Metamucil every day has been shown to lower cholesterol! It thickens to a gel after you drink it and it soaks up cholesterol as it goes through. My boyfriend, who is a very fit fireman who still has high cholesterol, just tried it. He says it makes him feel great! Everything works better, and he never knew he needed more fiber. So it is helping him two ways. He got the capsules, and it says you need to take 5 or 6 to get the cholesterol benefit.
Avatar n tn 3) Response to over-the-counter supplements vary from person to person, so the effect of niacin vs. fish oil on your triglyceride level is unknown. 4) There is some evidence that coenzyme Q10 may help with statin-induced muscle pain, but there is not any well-documented studies to support its use.
Avatar m tn Three years ago I was perscribed Zelco to reduce my LDL chorestrol and had to discontinue because of some bad reactions. I then started natural vitamins and nician, zeta to lower my chorestrol's LDL for past year of so. Last September my lips started swelling, chapping and turning red and the end of my tongue's taste buds feel numb or coated feeling. I also noticed my mouth and the inside of my bottom lip became very dry at times and had a metalic taste.
Avatar m tn Stop the production of cholesterol in your liver, or stop its absorption in the small intestine. Adding supplements to your diet can help reduce cholesterol, but most people have to be at their targets, eating right, and exercising before supplements can help them stay there. One supplement works through the liver just like a statin — because it is a statin, a natural one. Mevastatin is produced naturally by red rice yeast.
Avatar n tn Told to take Niacin by MD to reduce triglycerides. Took 500 mg tonight before going to bed, along with other meds / herbs. I was told to expect a bit of "flushing" but became pretty concerned when after 45 mins I had an intense burning all over on my skin; face felt puffy and tight; heart seemed to be beating noticeably.
Avatar m tn How to Naturally Avoid and Remove Dangerous Arterial Plaque The arteries are major blood vessels that the heart uses to pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Over time, arterial walls can become congested with a fatty substance known as plaque. When this happens to a severe point, the arteries may begin to harden and the blood flow can become compromised and ultimately result in a heart attack. Mainstream medicine's approach for treating plaque is to use drugs or surgery.
Avatar m tn Is that unusual to have high triglycerides? How can I reduce them naturally? Niacin, Omega-3s, soy, iodine to improve thyroid function?????
Avatar n tn Have you tried taking Niacin and Omega 3 Fish Oils? These can help those numbers.

Avatar n tn In fact, statin use has been studied in exercise induced PVC trials and have been shown to reduce the incidence of PVCs due to exercise so it would stand to reason that they also do not affect normal heart rhythm. Having said that, your PVCs may be anxiety related to statin use. There are many cases where side effects from control groups of statin users and placebo users occur at the same rate. This is a classic placebo affect which you may also be experiencing.
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took 500 mg a day of Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw came up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar f tn Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion. And if you are on a cholesterol lowering medication already, it may have no effect at all. It IS in a lot of multi vitamins and in food we eat, you are already getting some niacin. https://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn s cholesterol numbers are not where they need to be. to put it in perspective, some one with CAD should have an LDL under 70 and an HDL over 50. Is there a family history of hypercholesterolemia in his family? If so, his doctor may need to get more aggressive on lowering cholesterol. He needs to be living a healthy lifestyle with a heart friendly diet and exercise as allowed by his cardiologist.
Avatar n tn NIACIN IS AN IMPORTANT B VITAMIN THAT MAY RAISE YOUR HDL "GOOD" CHOLESTEROL: A Mayo Clinic doctor discusses niacin, including its benefits and side effects. "......What impact does niacin have on cholesterol? Niacin can raise HDL — the "good" cholesterol — by 15 percent to 35 percent. This makes niacin the most effective drug available for raising HDL cholesterol.
Avatar m tn Eggs do contain cholesterol, but are not shown to raise the cholesterol in our bodies. Fish oil pills are an excellent way to raise your HDL and lower LDL due to the high content of the Omege 3 fatty acids that they contain. Anything that has a high Omega 3 content will have this effect, such as flax seed. Most commercial eggs are commonly high in Omega 6 fatty acids due to the fact that they are raised in cages and eat the seeds of plants that have a high Omega 6 content.

Tbd Certain cholesterol medications have niacin added to them. What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
907968 tn?1292622204 My Dad's BP is nearly like mine (~110/65), and only recently started to have heart problems at 75 with a magnesium deficiency. He eats tree nuts like candy at times and always has walnuts in everything he makes such as sticky buns or brownies, ect... I used to hate any nut except peanuts but now I can tolerate them. My HDL (good) cholesterol is low and the LDL (bad) cholesterol is right where it's supposed to be but because of the low HDL this automatically makes the LDL high.
Avatar f tn How much Niacin were you taking daily? Was your physician aware you were going to take the Niacin to lower your cholesterol? Were you taking any other medications at the same time?
Avatar n tn Try Niacin to raise your HDL and keep your trigs nice and low. Nuts would also help but Niacin for sure can improve that number..otherwise you have good numbers. I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers.
225237 tn?1333138999 Your numbers are not too bad, however your HDL should be over 50 so that needs some attention. HDL (good Cholesterol) binds with LDL (bad cholesterol) to take it back to the liver to be removed or recycled. You should ask your doctor about Omega 3 fatty acids which help increase HDL as can Niacin. Also, exercise increases HDL, but please talk to your doctor before you start a new exercise routine.
