Common Questions and Answers about Niacin dosage high cholesterol

niaspan

Avatar f tn ve been taking 250 mg of Niacin. Based on the previous TSH told me to decrease to 150. The last dosage said to decrease to 125 mcg. Is this weird?
Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar n tn 40 mg is not high, it's the norm. Dosage of Simvastatin ca be as high as 80 mg. I am curious why you are on a statin with a total cholesterol of 160. What s your breakdown by LDL & HDL and do you have any risk factors of CAD currently? Plus, if your script was for 20 mg I would question the pharmacy about receiving 40 mg. Let us know when you can and we can speak more accurately about your dosage.
Avatar m tn Your LDL is very high and HDL is low, I would considers some lifestyle changes that include diet and exercise as well as a statin to help get these numbers down because high cholesterol and high BP are two modifiable risk factors and both will be benefited by diet and exercise. As far as BP meds go, I'm on Benicar HCT which is a angiotensin II receptor antagonist and it has worked very well for me for many years.
Avatar f tn //www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/niacin/art-20046208 Things to look out for when using are skin rashes, gi issues and possibly impact on developing type 2 diabetes. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/can-niacin-be-harmful-to-control-cholesterol/ So, it 'could' be beneficial but needs some doctor input to see if it is right for you.
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Tbd //www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/niacin/art-20046208. The thought behind adding niacin was that it would help raise HDL levels even more than the statin drug alone. However, just recently, studies indicate that this potential benefit really isn't being seen in patient populations. Good question, thank you for asking it. And remember to follow up with your doctor.
Avatar m tn From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
1323747 tn?1364806882 of niacin for high cholesterol this per two different doctors. Since I started recently on Armour I am noticing lots of bruising...some the size of a fifty cent piece. They seem spontaneous. I have about 12 right now but not all are that size. When I mentioned the bruising to the nurse at my doctors office she dismissed it saying she bruises easy too. ?? Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried lowering the aspirin to 162 mg.
Avatar n tn Background: I have engaged a Niacin regimen to cut cholesterol (vs. using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.

So, over the past 8 mths I took 500 mg a day of Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw came up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar n tn I have been Hypo for years and just like you my dosage of Synthroid was increased as I aged. Last year my cholesterol was high, doctor gave me a diet to follow and I was told to come back in 3 months. I was already eating semi-healthy and exercising everyday. In 3 months cholesterol still high. Doctor put me on Niaspan/Niacin. It worked, my cholesterol is down. But when doctor found nodule on thyroid in January, she told me my BP was high.
Avatar f tn I am concerned about my cholesterol levels and triglycerides. I am on a strict diet, but high cholesterol and triglycerides are genetic. Is it safe for me to take Centrum Cardio Vitamins (with plant phytols) to help lower my cholesterol? Also, does buffered niacin (or non-flushing niacin) work equally as well as regular niacin in helping to lower cholesterol? And is it safe to take with coumadin?
Avatar m tn Is that unusual to have high triglycerides? How can I reduce them naturally? Niacin, Omega-3s, soy, iodine to improve thyroid function?????
Avatar n tn I am very concerned with my cholesterol readings.. my total was 148.. ldl was 100 triglycerides were 52 but my hdl was 37. I am 37 year old female who is thinking she is a walking timebomb with clogged arteries now. & years ago my hdl was 59 but my cholesterol was higher at 176.. why would hdl lower with weightloss and lowering cholesterol.... Is is easily brought back up? Note, I do not eat any fish or nuts..
Avatar n tn said that he would consider changing from Lipitor 5 mg to Crestor (dosage not yet mentioned) after 1 more blood test. 3 years ago another dr. suggested a change, but cardiologist said no need to. Another Dr. (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg.
Avatar m tn YOur cholesterol is considered borderline high...meaning that its on the tail end of the normal range scale but still a little too high. That is easily remedied thru diet, exercise or the doc may want to put you on a cholesterol buster just until you get it down a little.
714128 tn?1249136386 200 - 239 is only borderline high 239 and up is high. Your good cholesterol and triglycerides are great. In the end you have to make choices for yourself. I certainly don't want diabetes from statins. Remember the pharmaceuticals are getting rich, by scaring us into statins. Just my opinion, you have to do what you think is right, i for one is not taking fish oil any more, it does make my LDL go up significantly.
Tbd However, my good cholesterol was not high enough. Someone told me that I should ask my doctor about taking Niacin.
Avatar n tn Hello dear and welcome to the medhelp forum. Niacin is usually prescribed for increasing the levels of HDL or the good cholesterol. It helps in protecting against the effects of atherosclerosis. It is available in many forms, fast acting and long lasting, over the counter and prescribed. There is a known incidence of facial flush with high doses. It could also cause headaches, dizziness and raised blood sugar. It is therefore prudent to take it under a physician’s prescription and supervision.
Avatar f tn hi! My Dr put me on Crestor, 40 mg once a day for high cholesterol and coronary plaque buildup..... Today is my 4th day taking it. Ive seen the commercials...and Ive researched online...It seems ok...Ive tolerated Lipitor in the past with absolutly NO side effects. I just noticed today that i seem to be sore...in my shoulder and neck.... as when I would shrug my shoulders...the muscles there seem sore when I do that. Now, maybe I did something...? Sat the wrong way, slept the wrong way...
Avatar n tn t contain cafestol and kahweol which raise cholesterol levels. Eat avacados which raise the good HDL type of cholesterol. - I hope this information helps you.
