Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar n tn Background: I have engaged a Niacin regimen to cut cholesterol (vs. using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
Avatar m tn By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.
Avatar n tn 40 mg is not high, it's the norm. Dosage of Simvastatin ca be as high as 80 mg. I am curious why you are on a statin with a total cholesterol of 160. What s your breakdown by LDL & HDL and do you have any risk factors of CAD currently? Plus, if your script was for 20 mg I would question the pharmacy about receiving 40 mg. Let us know when you can and we can speak more accurately about your dosage.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar n tn I am very concerned with my cholesterol readings.. my total was 148.. ldl was 100 triglycerides were 52 but my hdl was 37. Is is easily brought back up? Note, I do not eat any fish or nuts..
Avatar f tn hi! My Dr put me on Crestor, 40 mg once a day for high cholesterol and coronary plaque buildup..... Today is my 4th day taking it. Ive seen the commercials...and Ive researched online...It seems ok...Ive tolerated Lipitor in the past with absolutly NO side effects. I just noticed today that i seem to be sore...in my shoulder and neck.... as when I would shrug my shoulders...the muscles there seem sore when I do that. Now, maybe I did something...? Sat the wrong way, slept the wrong way...
1323747 tn?1364806882 of niacin for high cholesterol this per two different doctors. Since I started recently on Armour I am noticing lots of bruising...some the size of a fifty cent piece. They seem spontaneous. I have about 12 right now but not all are that size. When I mentioned the bruising to the nurse at my doctors office she dismissed it saying she bruises easy too. ?? Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried lowering the aspirin to 162 mg.
Avatar f tn Is it safe for me to take Centrum Cardio Vitamins (with plant phytols) to help lower my cholesterol? Also, does buffered niacin (or non-flushing niacin) work equally as well as regular niacin in helping to lower cholesterol? And is it safe to take with coumadin?
1063764 tn?1272821064 t shows they are quite different in action. Niacin is mostly for cholesterol and the heart and blood pressure, while folic acid is essential to proper nervous system functioning, and is in a balance with B6 and B12, which are especially important for mood regulation, to control homocysteine which in overabundance causes inflammation in the blood vessels.
Avatar f tn From the Mayo Clinic; >>>>>>Niacin can raise HDL — the "good" cholesterol — by 15 to 35 percent. This makes niacin the most effective drug available for raising HDL cholesterol. While niacin's effect on HDL is of most interest, it's worth noting that niacin also decreases your LDL and triglyceride levels. High levels of LDL and triglycerides are significant risk factors for heart disease.
Avatar n tn said that he would consider changing from Lipitor 5 mg to Crestor (dosage not yet mentioned) after 1 more blood test. 3 years ago another dr. suggested a change, but cardiologist said no need to. Another Dr. (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg.

Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took 500 mg a day of Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw came up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar m tn You could also ask about fibrates of fenofibrates which work in your intestines to help control the absorption of cholesterol. Niacin does not really do much to lower cholesterol. It increases HDL which is used to remove LDL from your system, however recent studies have found that HDL created by niacin use is not as effective as naturally occurring HDL particles. Can you tell me what your lipid profile is? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction with more information.
Avatar n tn Hello dear and welcome to the medhelp forum. Niacin is usually prescribed for increasing the levels of HDL or the good cholesterol. It helps in protecting against the effects of atherosclerosis. It is available in many forms, fast acting and long lasting, over the counter and prescribed. There is a known incidence of facial flush with high doses. It could also cause headaches, dizziness and raised blood sugar. It is therefore prudent to take it under a physician’s prescription and supervision.
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
Avatar m tn Niacin is a good start, however on average it only reduces LDL by approx 10% which will still leave the OP with a very high level of LDL, still well above AHA recommendations. I don't think Niacin (B3) alone will do it. Just my 2 cents............
Avatar n tn Your LDL is fine, however you have a very low HDL (good cholesterol) that should be dealt with as it should be over 50 for a woman, 40 for a man. There are many options to raise HDL, Niacin being one of the best. In addition, HDL responds very quickly to exercise, a minimum of 30 mins most days of the week of a good aerobic work out, trying to keep your heart rate at 70% plus of your maximum heart rate.
Tbd My bad cholesterol has always been at a good level. However, my good cholesterol was not high enough. Someone told me that I should ask my doctor about taking Niacin.
