Niacin dosage to raise hdl

Common Questions and Answers about Niacin dosage to raise hdl

niaspan

Avatar m tn My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later. My triglycerides have drop from 123 to 39 since I have been on Niapsan. Again, I would not change the niacin dosage, either up or down, w/o talking to the doctor about it.
Avatar n tn NIACIN IS AN IMPORTANT B VITAMIN THAT MAY RAISE YOUR HDL "GOOD" CHOLESTEROL: A Mayo Clinic doctor discusses niacin, including its benefits and side effects. "......What impact does niacin have on cholesterol? Niacin can raise HDL — the "good" cholesterol — by 15 percent to 35 percent. This makes niacin the most effective drug available for raising HDL cholesterol.
600301 tn?1219689156 Exercise, Niacin, Fibrates ( such as gemfibrozil) and some statins can all raise HDL. Alcohol consumption in moderation can also do this. Whereas there is a strong link between low HDL and risk for cardiac death and heart attacks, there is very little evidence that increasing it with drugs ( appart from gemfibrozil and Niacin) actually improves patient's mortality.
Tbd The thought behind adding niacin was that it would help raise HDL levels even more than the statin drug alone. However, just recently, studies indicate that this potential benefit really isn't being seen in patient populations. Good question, thank you for asking it. And remember to follow up with your doctor.
Avatar f tn From the Mayo Clinic; >>>>>>Niacin can raise HDL — the "good" cholesterol — by 15 to 35 percent. This makes niacin the most effective drug available for raising HDL cholesterol. While niacin's effect on HDL is of most interest, it's worth noting that niacin also decreases your LDL and triglyceride levels. High levels of LDL and triglycerides are significant risk factors for heart disease.
Avatar n tn s been very difficult to raise HDL...Actually, I had higher HDL readings without medication, around 35-38....Medication has lowered HDL, to below 35 & it's also has lowered LDL even further, but I had low LDL before meds....My total cholesterol with meds is typically below 150, trigelcerides are generally under 75, & LDL is typically below 100.....
Avatar n tn Your LDL is fine, however you have a very low HDL (good cholesterol) that should be dealt with as it should be over 50 for a woman, 40 for a man. There are many options to raise HDL, Niacin being one of the best. In addition, HDL responds very quickly to exercise, a minimum of 30 mins most days of the week of a good aerobic work out, trying to keep your heart rate at 70% plus of your maximum heart rate.
Avatar m tn To raise HDL, 1) increase aerobic exercise 2) lose weight if overweight 3) cut down on refined carbohydrates (sugars, white flour) 4) reduce saturated fat/increase monounsaturated fats intake. From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
Avatar m tn Based on your numbers, I calculate your LDL at 57, which is very good. I would work to raise your low HDL, everything else is fine. Exercise works well as does Niacin, but do not start a new supplement or exercise routine without discussing it with your doctor. Eve with a low HDL, you TC/HDL ratio is good. Having such a low LDL makes your low HDL less of a risk, but it still should be around 40 or better.
Avatar m tn The correct dose of niacin depends on what abnormality you and your doctor are trying to correct. To raise HDL and correct small LDL, a dose of 750-1000 mg a day usually provides full benefit. Increasing this dose to 1500 mg a day may provide slightly greater benefit. To reduce LDL or Lp(a), higher doses (from 1000 mg up to 4000-5000 mg per day) are often used, with higher doses providing greater effects. However, doses this high should be taken only with a physician’s supervision.
Avatar f tn Niacin HAS been used to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion. And if you are on a cholesterol lowering medication already, it may have no effect at all. It IS in a lot of multi vitamins and in food we eat, you are already getting some niacin. https://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn Try Niacin to raise your HDL and keep your trigs nice and low. Nuts would also help but Niacin for sure can improve that number..otherwise you have good numbers. I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers.
Avatar n tn how can i raise the HDL? I have started taking Fish oil(combo fish, borage, flaxseed) and i need to get in teh exercise routine. I dont drink but if drinking 1 glass of red wine will help i will. (Ill hold my nose ;) Am i in danger of an immediate heart attack? This has stressed me out to no end and i can stop looking online about it and everything i read is so upsetting. How much fish oil can I safely take? I can read about Niacin........
475570 tn?1280941363 Here is the basis of what they found. They were able to produce additional HDL particles, however the new particles are smaller in size and do not have a protective property against CAD. The naturally occurring HDL in your body is better at doing it's job than the artificially produced HDL. The reason the trial was stopped was because they were not seeing any reduction in cardiac events between the Niacin control group and the placebo control group.
519736 tn?1253986826 Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep. he has missed the last 2 days of work.
Avatar f tn Niacin is often prescribed to help raise HDL. Exercise is beneficial. Still, most people see only a modest benefit for all their efforts. Have you ever heard of Dr. Esselstyn? He is a former Cleveland Clinic doctor, now retired, who has found that a plant-based diet can halt or even reverse coronary heart disease. It's worth looking into, in my opinion. Also, your dad should consider a completely trans fat-free diet - absolutely nothing partially hydrogenated.
Avatar m tn Is that unusual to have high triglycerides? How can I reduce them naturally? Niacin, Omega-3s, soy, iodine to improve thyroid function?????
Avatar n tn My husband is having high level of TRYGLOCEROIDS. TILL DEC 2011 HE WAS 250 TO 275 RANGE. YESTRDAY IT HAS SHOOTED UP TO 410 LEVEL. THE NORMAL RANGE IS 150. HE IS TAKING ORVAS 20 MG DAILY ONCE. PLEASE TELL MORE ABOUT THIS. IS THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF THIS MEDICINE?. HOW TO CONTROL THE trygloceroid WITH DIET?. WHAT CAUSES THE trygloceroid TO RAISE?
Avatar f tn Exercise is a great way to raise HDL. Also, there are some meds such as Niacin, ask your doctor about it as well as some other supplements that may work.
Avatar n tn 61 VLDL 52 So I thought for sure eating plant based and exercise would help get these in line but apparently not. What can I do to lower the triglycerides and raise the HDL? I also have MVP if it matters. Oh and my ALT for my liver function a few years ago was like 91 which was due to the fatty liver now it IS 49 so it looks like the liver might be getting better, so what would still be causing the others to be out of whack. I am really concerned.
Avatar m tn My dr told me to exercise and eat right to raise HDL, mine's not really low but fluctuates often for some strange reason. I haven't exercised in almost 2 years so it's 49 right now, but when I did exercise it stayed between 60-70. I did just start a very mild walking program, so it will be interesting to see if exercise does increase it at any level.
Avatar n tn I have been placed on Niacor to raise my HDLs (both HDL and LDH are very low). I had an eye injury to left eye and now can only see dim light, no images. Since taking Niacor I have started seeing color (traffic lights for instance) and both eyes seem to have a greater sensitivity to light. I have glaucoma which I have had under control for 15 years. Could the Niacor have any impact on my vision?
