Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar n tn I take Niacin twice a day as recommended by my physician a long with a vitamin B - 100 complex tablet and my Tinnitus is lower in tone.
Avatar f tn but I just wondered, are there others out there on Crestor, same dosage? Any words of advice? Encouragement? Would it be too early to experience any side effects from the med?
Avatar m tn Niacin is important for the conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy! Adults need about 16 milligrams a day. Almonds, Niacin Content: 1 oz, 1 mg Daily Value: 6%. Eat them right before you go the gym. Their high in L-arginine that can actually boost your carb and fat burn during your workout. Navy Beans, Niacin: 1/2 cup, 1.5 mg Daily Value: 9%. They contain resistant starch, a type of fiber that boosts calorie burn by up to 23%.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
Avatar f tn I am right now reducing the dosage of geodon to be once a day whereas minimum dosage is 20 mg twice and willing to be on niacin 3g only therapy without geodon
Avatar n tn 40 mg is not high, it's the norm. Dosage of Simvastatin ca be as high as 80 mg. I am curious why you are on a statin with a total cholesterol of 160. What s your breakdown by LDL & HDL and do you have any risk factors of CAD currently? Plus, if your script was for 20 mg I would question the pharmacy about receiving 40 mg. Let us know when you can and we can speak more accurately about your dosage.
Avatar m tn For a good multi-vitamin, I consider the minimum to be at least 25 milligrams of each of the main Bs (B-1, B-2, B-6, e.g.). I also consider more to be better as far as the water-soluble vitamins go (the Bs, vitamin C, and some others are water-soluble, while A, D, E, and K are fat soluble). 'Bear in mind that the RDI (recommended daily intake), DV (daily value), or whatever, is calculated to be the dose that keeps you from overtly DYING of a nutrient deficiency.
Avatar n tn My husband is only 38, he had a stroke last year he had a stent put in, now he is on plavix, atenolol, hydrochlorothiazide 25mg, last week his doc added niacin 500 mg, simvastatin 20, flexeril and tramadol, also his one aspirin each day, these are just so many meds, are they safe?
Avatar n tn He should try Omega 3 fish oil, I think 2 to 4 grams a day is the recommended dose to raise the HDL (good cholesterol levels) and to lower the Triglicerides, assuming they are high. We all have reasons why we do or do not take certain medications, and I respect that. However, I'll just mention that I had a cholesterol level about where his is, and I was trying to lower it with a strict diet and 'natural' stuff from the health food department.
Avatar n tn For those reading, make sure you speak to your doctor if they have recommended niacin for an alternative. We wish you the best and again, thanks so much for sharing.
414508 tn?1222627690 for the recipe listed under thomas recipe, i saw the p.m. recipe requires 50 mg niacin which my haelth food store only carries 500mg, took last night while detoxing from vicodin addiction and my skin was on fire.THOUGHT I WAS DYING!!!!! then i read bottle a.m. and sure enough, normal reaction. my question is: was the 50 mg listed a typo, was it supposed to read 500, if not i will have to cut down tablets. someone please help, pregnant and need to do this asap.
Avatar f tn I hope this is it. Is this possible? by the way, I think niacin helps. Niacin helps when our brain gets stressed and adrenaline produces a hormone that makes us feel bad. I took niacin today and that seemed to help. I will keep posting until I am done but I must thank those few who did give me feedback here. I didn't get very much feedback. but what little I got really helped. Thank you.
Avatar n tn The recommended upper limit for zinc per day for an adult male / female is 40 mg. You should not have an lasting effects if you have only been taking it for 4 weeks and should bring it down to 40mg. Vitamins and minerals do cause issues when they are taken above the upper limits or mega dose levels. That will cause the body to have toxic build up and medical issues will occur. The issues can be serious depending on the length of time and amounts the supplements were taken.
Avatar m tn I found this interesting podcast from Chris Kresser - RHR: How Your Lipoprotein(a) Level Affects Your Risk of Heart Disease. So from that info find a good quality fish oil. I believe Krill Oil is even better but it's more expensive. There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life.
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar n tn I was taking a nerve formula for neuropathy that had only B vitamins and upon trying to cut down on the dose I suffered extreme neuropathy pain as well as general body pain. I went back to my normal dosage and the symptoms went away. this happened twice and I am back on the B vitamin formula.
Avatar n tn said that he would consider changing from Lipitor 5 mg to Crestor (dosage not yet mentioned) after 1 more blood test. 3 years ago another dr. suggested a change, but cardiologist said no need to. Another Dr. (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg.
Avatar f tn Are you taking any medications, either prescription or OTC that contain niacin? Niacin can cause flushing which happens when our blood vessels expand (which niacin is used for) and the blood rises closer to our skin which can cause really intense sensations of heat, extreme itching and a deep red "flush" of color to our skin which is usually limited to the upper portion of our bodies...........chest, neck, arms and head. I'm afraid that pretty much sums up my guesses.
Avatar f tn I was told to take 500 MG of Niacin if that happened. Does this mean I am insufficient in Niacin also? Or is there something more serious going on? My first dose of Nature Thyroid was very strong and gave me jitters. Should I split it in half and take half in the morning and half in the evening? You don’t know how much I appreciate your opinion.
Avatar m tn After getting the HDL numbers to 43 (from 28 in 2009) by using plain niacin, fish oil and exercise, a shotgun approach of natural possibilities to raise HDL was adopted in December 2010. Currently use vitamin D, 2 tbs cocoa in my morning coffee and take cayenne and cinnamon supplements at the maximum recommended dose. The April 22 numbers were ldl 43, Tri 32, HDL 64!! This compares with 66, 67, and 43 respectively in December. Still on the niacin and fish oil in high doses...
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
