1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
Avatar f tn ve been taking 250 mg of Niacin. Based on the previous TSH told me to decrease to 150. The last dosage said to decrease to 125 mcg. Is this weird?
Avatar m tn valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests.
Avatar f tn His early work led to the use of niacin for schizophrenia and as an cholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer died in 2009 at the age of 91, but he successfully treated many thousands of patients with high dose niacin for psychotic disorders. He presented some very compelling evidence to support treating most psychotic disorders as a vitamin B3 deficiency.
Avatar m tn B-12 crisis Overdoing the dosage of vitamin B-12 is generally not a problem for vegetarians, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) that carries an important warning about cardiovascular health. A study tested the effects of B vitamin supplements on more than 500 patients who had undergone coronary angioplasty. Half of the group received a supplement of folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12, while the other half received a placebo.
Avatar n tn I am bipolar and have taken niacin for years....I took 500mg of niacin the reagular kind not the no flush kind It did cause me to have a niacin flush (which is typical)...it has never caused me trouble with mainia only made me flush wich eased anxiety and caused me to be tired afterwards...It might affect others diffently though. Nician is a B vitamin and B vitmins can cause you to more energetic you shouldn't take them in excess esp if you have bipolar....
Avatar f tn There has not been a single treatment that has worked as well as Niacin for me (I have been searching for the correct treatment as soon as I started experiencing more serious symptoms, and the treatments I have tried unsuccessfully are lithium, seroquel, and paxil). Olanzapine seems to have a positive impact on me and I continue to take it as hopefully a preventative measure.
Avatar n tn 40 mg is not high, it's the norm. Dosage of Simvastatin ca be as high as 80 mg. I am curious why you are on a statin with a total cholesterol of 160. What s your breakdown by LDL & HDL and do you have any risk factors of CAD currently? Plus, if your script was for 20 mg I would question the pharmacy about receiving 40 mg. Let us know when you can and we can speak more accurately about your dosage.

Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.

Avatar f tn just too much for my sensitive system I guess...but they told me to not try Niacin again. It was more (embarassing for ME) and FUNNY for everyone else!! I still get teased about it!!!
Avatar f tn I hope this is it. Is this possible? by the way, I think niacin helps. Niacin helps when our brain gets stressed and adrenaline produces a hormone that makes us feel bad. I took niacin today and that seemed to help. I will keep posting until I am done but I must thank those few who did give me feedback here. I didn't get very much feedback. but what little I got really helped. Thank you.
Avatar m tn t realize that the medications for depression and schizophrenia... and whatever else... were NEVER meant to be used for long periods of time like they currently are. This is the basis of why he does his research. He doesn't necessarily disregard pharmaceuticals, but believes they can be paired with vitamins/whatever is deficient, and the mental illness will subside. VERY intriguing stuff. Good luck with yourself and your doctors. Maybe start taking a multivitamin?
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
Avatar n tn I recently had 3 pulmonary embolism crisis within the last 2 years and tested positive for tb for the first time. Is there some connection since they both affect the lungs? Since I am already taking coumidin, crestor and niacin, will the 9mnth tb treatment burn out my liver?
Avatar n tn I don't know if this helps you..but in layman's terms...niacin B3 is needed to create energy for metabolism. Are you having problems with weight gain or loss?
Avatar n tn Has anyone suffered vitamin B addiction. I was taking a nerve formula for neuropathy that had only B vitamins and upon trying to cut down on the dose I suffered extreme neuropathy pain as well as general body pain. I went back to my normal dosage and the symptoms went away. this happened twice and I am back on the B vitamin formula.
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
2019697 tn?1334150247 your post is important to me. B3 is niacin, yes? No doctor I have seen has a good word for it. 'Waste of noney', said one of them. Cardiologists are te same when I ask if I should take it (I have one stent placed). I got the usual flush when I took it, a nuisance but bearable. But its defenders talk of a very strong dose in order for it to be effective. I have some of 250mgs but am wary of the hot flushes. Can you please saywhat dose of B3 is included in theB-complex you take?
Avatar n tn said that he would consider changing from Lipitor 5 mg to Crestor (dosage not yet mentioned) after 1 more blood test. 3 years ago another dr. suggested a change, but cardiologist said no need to. Another Dr. (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg.
Avatar n tn Pronounced Qs *WITH* inverted Ts is usually a sign of a previous infarct. ST depression points to ischemia. EKGs aren't the final word in diagnosing the issue. It would be cause to order further esclation of tests to confirm, which you had and which did not confirm MI. The next escalation from here if those test were inconclusive would be angiogram, cardiac CT, and/or a cardiac MRI with 3D turbo/contrast. Your level 2 tests did not indicate a need to escalate.
