Neurontin is a nerve blocker to help w/neuropathy pain. I have been on it about 6 months for fibro. It seems to help a little with some of the pain sensations I get, not so much with the others, and it never seems to lower my pain level more than a few numbers on the scale. I was up to taking 300mg 3x per day but most days now I only take it at night, unless I'm having a lot of trouble with the tingly, shocky kind of pain.
I was originally prescribed neurontin for my sciatic pain. It didn't really help with th pain at all. I did some reading on it and found out it is used it some detox centers. So, I used it when coming off of hydrocodone. It made a huge difference. I'd say it took away 90% of the withdrawal symptoms. I only took it for about 7 to 10 days. It did help with the rls and sleep. The only thing that bothered me was a bit of anxiety.
When I used the neurontin I only took it for about 10 days just to get through the physical withdrawals. Neurontin is used for many different things. A few of those are sleep, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, hot flashes, and many others. All of those symptons are a part of withdrawals. I was truly amazed on how well it worked. I was originally prescribed neurontin for nerve pain due to scar tissue hitting my sciatic nerve.
s are finding some drugs can be used sucessfully for off-label use for other issues. Neurontin which I was on for 9 yrs. completely destroyed my teeth. They started chipping and flaking in the strangest spots. I've also now lost most of my teeth due the the extreme dryness caused by this drug. I've since learned that Epilepsy patients (the drug is for this) are warned of this problem, but my Dr.'s never ever said a word. I am currently going through $25,000.
Question for everyone....I am taking Gabapentin for "permanent" sciatic nerve damage. The Gabapentin works great, aside from the fact that I get brain fog and drowsiness. This drug separates me from pain, however, makes me a zombie! Does anyone know of a drug or supplement that I can take with the Gabapentin to combat the somnolence?
I take Neurontin for severe nerve pain at disc, low back, legs and feet. Nerve pain started immediatley after sed/ta disc surgery. Have taken neurontin for 8 years. Gained 40 lbs within in 6 months of starting Neurontin. Started losing hair when began Neurontin. Fortunately I had lots of hair to start with but 8 years later, I will soon have to wear a wig because of the dramatic hair loss. Also frustrated that cannot get the 40 pounds off either.
an opiate is not the main medication for treatment. Most patients are on a nerve pain medication like Lyrica, Neurontin, or Cymbalta. These target specific nerve pain which is your main source of pain with the herniated discs and sciatic nerve pain. An opiate does not work well for this.
Same thing with having a muscle relaxer to take as needed. Flexeril, Skelaxin, Robaxin, Baclofen, or Zanaflex. This is very useful for those times with bad muscle spasms...

Most of the time I still use the same number of pills per day of everything but I can switch up the schedule to get a milder or stronger effect depending on if I am having a good pain day or a flare up day. On flare up days, when I take the neurontin in conjunction with either percocet or valium 2 hours after the extended release morphine gets going, I get super fuzzy for awhile but my pain flare also goes down a lot too.
I was prescribed neurontin for sciatic nerve pain from a herniated disc. My doctor told me it was not addicting. I know you have to taper off of it though. So if you have been taking it, make sure you don't stop all at once. I agree with going to a pain management clinic. They can point you in the right direction such as epidural steroid shots, physical therapy, water therapy, and other things to try. There are also other non narcotic pain meds out there that may help.
I was referred to a Urologist who put a stent in for 6 weeks...Imediately my leg began to pain extremly !...I have had the stent out for about 3 weeks and reported to the Doctor that my right leg had burning throbbing pains during and after the stent...but I was told it was not due to the stent...sigh...
My 10 year old son was perscribed gabapentin/neurontin (in combination with a few other drugs) for his nerve pain. It definitely helped but the side affects are a huge trade-off. He gained a considerable amount of weight too but I attruibuted that mostly to the fact that all he did was eat, sleep & be foggy - and wasn't able to be his normal active self. He's since been off the meds and the weight has come off too as he's now able to resume most his normal activities.
I do have bone spurs In my lumbar spine, but I was told they couldn't do anything further for me on that particular section of my spine. I've already had one surgery and they seem to think that doing anything else will do more harm than good. I just found out about the thoracic spine a couple of weeks ago along with the CM. I'm set to see a neurosurgeon on May 12th. Please keep me in mind and send some good vibes my way :).
Flexeril is a muscle relaxer and it is possible to become dependent on them. They aren't known to be highly addictive but anything is possible if taken for an extended period of time.
When you weren't able to sleep did you also not take your dose of neurontin? I was prescribed neurontin for sciatic pain and I could see where missing a dose of it could also keep one from falling asleep.
My pain management dr has put me on Neurontin to help with thoracic back pain, I have herniated discs that basically are not going to be fixed, no doctor wants to touch it. My question is how is this drug for long term treatment of severe pain, he also has me on Norco but I am hesitant to take because of addiction potential. If anyone has any input please let me know.
