If people give in to sugar cravings and eat too many donuts whilst on methadone then it is the donuts that have caused the weight gain not the methadone. I am aware that many people gain weight on methadone maintenance but discipline, regular exercise and a healthy diet will eliminate the possibility of picking up excess weight.
-) what about vitadone would that help right now or no? May I ask you how much weight did you gain on methadone and how much weight did you lose during your taper? Then how much weight have you lost sence you've been completely off? Are there certain foods I should be not eating while still on methadone? Like I no sugar isn't good to eat while on methadone but I read somewhere carbs sent good and wheat isn't good either..?
i have been trying to do some research on methadone and weight gain. i have noticed that i am not the only one out there that has gained weight while taking methadone. it would be great if anyone can help or have suggestions on losing weight and if it is easy to do. i have read alot of people asking similar questions but no replys on the subject at hand.
i had read that up to 80% of people on methadone gain weight so i was just curious if any of the people that have been off it for a while had lost any weight.also i could sure drop about 30lbs so i was hoping that my quitting methadone would also help to lose some weight probably wishful thinking.looks like excercise is the only answer.
Hi and welcome! Jifmoc said it best...why do you need methadone!!?? A lot of people gain weight while on it! I work at a methadone clinic and can tell you from just what I see and hear the majority of the people on it do gain weight! What about going to an inpatient detox? Do you have insurance? Being inpatient could also help with the other issues and start to get you on the road to recovery!!! Please keep posting and let us know how you are doing!!
s the nature of the beast. Most people gain weight on Methadone but I never did. Then I got off of it 5 years ago and quit smoking and then gained a little. Methadone slows down digestion and make the GI trac sluggish and isn't a drug that's conducive to muscle tone. You could try to exercize more and eat less cabs and fats or go way down on dose or get off, which you may not want to hear.

I just started a Methadone program about 5 days ago and I am on a very low dose, but I have already gained like 5 pounds, but the kicker is, is that I have also been on Lithium for mood disorders, and I hear that's a drug that will make you gain the mist weight out of the two...So I am going to drop the Lithium obviously because of the two Methadone is the one I need the most, because I don't feel like being deathly ill at the moment..Any thoughts?
I have gained 50lbs while on methadone as I know now weight gain is common among mmt patients. I have been eagerly awaiting for the weight to come off but as of yet I haven't lost a lb. I know everyone loses their methadone weight in different ways but I was wondering if anyone started losing the weight as they tapered down? If so, around what mg were u on when the weight started coming off? Or did most of it come off AFTER u stopped taking methadone?
ifelt goo for about a month (really good) but since then I have no appetite at all and have lost so much weight but every one else seems to gain and feel like **** in the mornings with stomach pains and stiff aching hands wrists and shoulders.. does this sound normal or could it be something else and the methadone is masking it..when I have taken my daily dose I feel good after an hour but not great.. i want to come off it now... thank you for your time .. HI the weight gain is tuff to get around I switched sugar for sweet n low that helped a bit your best bet is get into a gym and work out ultimately its to get off the methadone but your problem is fairly common when your ready to come off the stuff look me up I can help good luck and God bless........
hi and welcome to the forum....well I to put a lot of weight on wile on methadone went from a slim 36in waist at 185 to a 44 in waist at 246lb it is very common to gain weight on this drug....for me once I got into the lower doses it started to come off.....it is different for everybody but it all boils down to metabolizem methadone slows that down with time it will come back up and the weight will start to come off.....eating right is only part of the equation...
I dont believe methadone has anything to do with weight gain or loss, its your life style that changes , your eating habits your activity level. Ive been off of methadone for over a year and ive lost 40 plus pounds , but was due to the change of lifestyle, i exercise and eat healthy . When i was on it i didnt care what i looked like so i didnt follow a strict regiment.
And as I seen here in the comments most of everyone on the methadone program has gained a significant amount of weight but on the other hand, My boyfriend is now on 9 mg and has lost a significant amount of weight since Christmas 2014, he was 154 and now down to 129, and it concerns me that he might be sick with cancer, or its just a side affect from the meds because he is now literally skin and bones no muscle feeling at all when I touch him or cuddle him, it freaks me out for him to be this w
Why does methadone cause such weight gain, and how can you combat this. I exercise daily, I eat very little and yet I cannot lose weight. Some days when I work out I get cold sweats and it feels like my dose is wearing out, then I take a break and calm down and everything is fine. Last time I was on methadone I put on 45 lbs and was completely inactive, I want to avoid those issues this time. Vitamins? Food diet? Does anything prevent the constipation and weight gain?
Hi again, just read your post now, about the weight issue I did not gain weight particularly on methadone. I was on opiates before methadone but they never could take my pain away and that is why I went on methadone. As much as I don't like the drug, it did take my pain away, but there was no reason for me to stay on it that long. Nobody ever said to me "why don't you try and get off this stuff"? I guess it is all a money thing.
I been on methadone for 8 month and I've put on 15 to 20lbs I refuse to weight myself again bc ill go back to using just so I won't put on weight. There r good and bad things when it comes to this drug..the only good thing is that it keeps me off the street drugs. Since taking meth I've been hiding in my house on the couch with all the blinds closed and light off its got me in this depressive state of mind. I just want to be home and left alone.
I was on methadone for a year and if you take oxys while on it, you won't really feel the oxys, so it would kinda be pointless, plus the should drug test her at the methadone clinic. I wouldn't recommened methadone for anybody. Make sure you know all the side effects.
