Metformin side effects and pcos

Common Questions and Answers about Metformin side effects and pcos

Avatar f tn Do you have pcos? I was on metformin too and don't remember having any side effects. I guess once it adjusts to your body you might feel better. Also, there are good chances of getting pregnant while taking clomid with metformin.
1187113 tn?1320695096 I know what you mean about the Metformin! I have PCOS and I feel like crap WITHOUT it. I can't take it because I'm breastfeeding. It helped me to lose weight and eventually ovulate and ultimately get pregnant with my baby girl. Good luck!
Avatar f tn However, recently, I experienced the metallic taste and am suffering bad gastro side effects 3 months afterwards. Is it possible to have side effects from medication delayed ----instead of immediate side effects? I haven't switched pharmacy and the manufacture is still sando. Any advice or feedback? I'd be quite grateful.
374593 tn?1257883550 does it make you lose weight or do you have to worry about getting hypoglycemic.. and what side effects did you have? thanks so much for any and all help!
Avatar n tn I don't think it will have any side effects, I have been taking Metformin for a year now and I am currently 12 weeks pregnant THANKS to Metformin, injections and I seriously doubt it gives any side effects!
415867 tn?1323369103 Here is something I just googled about metformin and PCOS, and the way it could help! Hope this helps ya, it helped me in making my decision to take it!!!! RESTORATION OF NORMAL MENSTRUAL CYCLE. A number of studies have shown that menstruation can be restored in many women with PCOS. For example, in a study at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, 43 women who were not having periods took Glucophage, and 39 of them resumed normal menses.
623922 tn?1223410591 My DH and I have been ttc for over 2 years. I have been diagnosed with mild PCOS and mild endometriosis. I've been through one unsuccessful fresh and frozen ivf cycle. Because I can't afford to go through another round of ivf right now my gyn prescribed 500mg of Metformin to help with ovulation. I know that I ovulate but she thinks the Metformin/Glucophage might help me. Has anyone been on Metformin that can tell me what to expect?
Avatar f tn The dr, knowing all of your history, would make the decision and weigh out the good vs bad. Sometimes the bad side effects are worth the risk. Sometimes they want to try other steps first. You could google the drug and see. I only know that low blood sugars are really bad effects. Best wishes.
342133 tn?1227112277 I have PCOS too and I am on metformin. It didn't work for me though. I ovulated only with injectibles. But my friend(very lucky) she got pregnant on metformin and her dd is 13 months old.
Avatar f tn I've had no side effects. Once in a while i'll have loose stool if i eat too many carbs. How is your dr. having you take it?
Avatar n tn Taking the extended release version, gradually increasing the dosage and taking it at night are supposed to help a lot with the side effects. I have had ZERO side effects!! Also after a few weeks I decided to change and take it in the morning with breakfast since that is a more regular meal for me. I cannot tell at all that I am on this stuff. You could ask your doctor to switch you to the extended release formula which is also more convient to take since you can take it all at once.
466374 tn?1254456023 I have been taking Metformin for about a year. My doc started me on it with clomid and i have not had any irregular cycles from taking it. 393893 tn?1283554830 It named off many side effects that were normal and were not normal. I had both. I put in a call to my re yesterday but haven't heard back yet and I'm a little scared. If anyone can tell me exactly what they experienced I would be so grateful-thank you!
330481 tn?1309491843 Thank you. I wasn't on anything for the PCOS and when I did clomid by itself, I didn't ovulate until 100mg and then at 150mg I had two eggies pop out :) So, good luck with the clomid!!!
918479 tn?1272841752 Has anyone else had this while taking Metformin? Or should side effects disappear once your body has adjusted to the drug? Also, I have taken several pregnancy tests and gotten a period every month since the D&C. Thanks!
Avatar m tn Im 19 years and have been recently diagnosed with PCOS. i have all the symptons the majorrr weight gain, excess hair growth, acne, and thinning hair. Will metformin help all my symptoms?
Avatar f tn ok i am on metformin and the reason why u guys get that way is because its a pill for diabeties, (also used for PCOS) and your sugar levels go down with it so you have to eat with it. You take the pill in the morning with breakfast and evening with supper, and those who tak 3 pills should eat lunch with it!!
1434731 tn?1382725984 I to have PCOS, and started Metformin in May 2010. I started with 1000 mg daily, to 1500mg daily. I am TTC, but nothing yet. I know that Metformin isn't suppose to bring on your AF (Provera is suppose to do that), but I have heard wonderful and horriable things about Metformin. As for me, I have lost 50 + lbs. For a while (5 months) I was in th gym 4-5 times a week, but I started school and somewhat got lazy with going to the gym. Metformin has helped with my weight loss.
Avatar n tn The doctor then put me on Metformin. I have been on Metformin for almost a year now and my dose was increased from 500mg to 1000mg a day. I am have several dry skin, my hair keeps falling off, and diarrhea. But one thing I don't understand is that since I have been on Metformin for so long, it does keep sort of regulate my period every month. But my testosterone and triglycerides are still high. Now, I have to deal with this sort of kidney pain and back pain everyday.
Avatar f tn It was slow in the beginning because of the side effects from the metformin ex. stomach bloat, gas, diarrhea, and ingestion. my doc still has me taking it and my birth control (nuvaring), although i haven't been trying to get pregnant yet, im hoping that when i decide to that everything will work out. I did experience a miscarriage back in 2008, so I'm assuming I've had PCOS for a while..
1187113 tn?1320695096 I'm not sure if your overweight or not but if you have gained weight lately that can do it too. Oh and side note I'm assuming you have PCOS since your on metformin... high glucose levels can cause gastroparesis.
1519983 tn?1401050028 There are some symptoms that will come with Metformin though. One of the big ones is gastrointestinal side effects including diarreah, gas , and bloating. I have experiences all three in the last couple days, but it hasn't been too painful, so I can make it through this. I am on 850 mg taken once daily for now and then on Saturday 12/18/2010, I will start on 850 mg twice daily. I heare the symptoms get much better as time goes on, so we will see.
Avatar f tn Hi, Metformin does have some side effects which can be quite bothersome. To get periods you can take a short course of progestins, instead of birth control. The aim in taking birth control pills is to keep PCOS in check and they need to be taken for a slightly longer time. Consult your Doctor. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Watch out for the side the other two ladies stated, one w/ breakfast, one w/ lunch, and one w/ dinner...its hard when you don't eat 3 meals a day tho...
Avatar m tn I have hypothyroidism, high prolactin levels and PCOS. My doctor has decided to put me on Metformin to treat the PCOS because the Synthroid doesn't seem to be helping my weight complaints much at all. I'm 125 pounds now and no matter how healthy I eat and how much I work out, I can't lose weight. I'm just wondering if there have been any success stories with Metformin and PCOS because I've seen a lot of negativity about the drug.
Avatar f tn If you take it on an empty stomach or stop taking it and start back up you will have bad side effects again.
