Common Questions and Answers about Metformin weight gain pcos

Avatar n tn Metformin has been shown to help some, but not all, people lose weight. But, it is not a consistent weight loss medication. However it does have other benefits for women with PCOS, including improving the likelihood of spontaneous ovulation, or making women who need clomid to help them ovulate more sensitive to clomid. Are your periods regular? What are your goals - weight loss? Pregnancy? If weight loss, a nutritionist might be helpful.
Avatar f tn oh yes when u have PCOS you gain alot of weight i gained about 50lbs but now with metformin i have lost about 15lbs. The only thing i hate it makes me sick. Stomach achs and makes u go.(sorry if tmi) I've been in provera, clomid and metformin and still not pregnant but now my period is arriving without meds thank God.
330481 tn?1309491843 The Metformin did help me lose some weight but I did have to diet and exercise. The Metformin did seem to help me lose weight quicker. Before the Metformin, I was losing weight EXTREMELY slow even with diet and exercise. When I first started taking the Metformin, I had to cut out ALL sweet food from my diet because the food would make me very nauseous when taken with the Metformin.
Avatar m tn i have all the symptons the majorrr weight gain, excess hair growth, acne, and thinning hair. Will metformin help all my symptoms?

1262373 tn?1281547382 I think the control of the horomones in the IUD was good for my body, but IDK how to deal with the weight gain. Through e-mail the doc suggested metformin and we will discuss this on tuesday. Any thoughts??
1434731 tn?1382725984 For us with PCOS gain weight becouse our bodys respond to foods different. Excercise will help but not unless you eat the right foods for your body. And the correct portion size. You may notice you dont eat much more than all your friends but it affects your body and not theres. If you just changed what you eat even without excercise you will see a big difference. I learned alot about how to eat and what to eat from weight watchers.
Avatar f tn I was put on metformin because I had pcos. This was almost 3 years ago. I wasn't ovulating or getting a period. I was able to start right away without getting a period. I am on 500mg twice a day and 2 months ago I started IVF and when they took the ultrasounds there was no sign of PCOS at all. I have been getting my period on my own and ovulating. I only have one ovary so I only ovulate 6 times a year and the other times my body thinks it's ovulating which results in...when?
Avatar f tn The medication is working with one problem, but I'm not sure why it isn't helping in the other area of weight. I heard that people loose weight with Metformin! So I'm stuck as what to do?? Any suggestions??
Avatar f tn I too am on metformin for PCOS plus spironolactone. Although I have just started 7days ago, I don't see a decrease in my appetite. I don't eat much as it is. I do exercise regularly if not in the morning in the evening and sometimes both morning and evening. All I do is cardio like Zumba and a half cardio and weights class. If you don't go to a gym look into one that offers workout classes. Why pay for classes aside from the gym fee if you pay one. It is less expensive that way.
706214 tn?1244526649 If you are overweight even moderate weight loss and exercise will improve the symptoms of PCOS . because weigth gain makes the hormonal imbalance worse. although i hate medicines and their side effects metformin may help with weight loss aswell .
Avatar n tn I also have PCOS and was diagnosed at age 19, with my doctor putting me on metformin. I was sick everyday and also gained weight. The weight gain though is probably more from the PCOS then the medicine, if you do an research on PCOS you will find that one of the symptoms is weight gain especially around your mid section. Do some online research and talk with your doctor about how you are feeling.
342133 tn?1227112277 I have PCOS too and I am on metformin. It didn't work for me though. I ovulated only with injectibles. But my friend(very lucky) she got pregnant on metformin and her dd is 13 months old.
Avatar f tn I would like to try it because I heard it helps women with PCOS lose weight. I need to lose weight and being on Provera and Clomid has made me gain weight the last 2 months. I have been eating right too but I am not losing anything! Grrrr Did you doc what to try you on Provera or Clomid??????
Avatar n tn I did a diet of low carbs and sugar, took vitex (chaste tree berry) and exercised. Weight lifting is a GREAT way to help lose weight if you have pcos. Also, my dr put me on a pill to induce my period (the idea being that inducing your period will trick your body into ovulating). I am 40w1d with my second boy!
Avatar f tn I eat the same stuffs like usual, but i still gain weight, Which is very frustrating. I have heard that gaining weight could delay periods too right? Is this possible?.
Avatar n tn In one study conducted at Virginia Commonwealth University, 24 obese PCOS women were given metformin or placebo. The 11 women who received the metformin experienced a reduction in insulin levels, which slowed the activity of an enzyme in the ovaries that stimulates excess production of testosterone. As a result, testosterone levels also dropped.(3) Glucophage appears to do the same for non-obese PCOS women, according to a study from the University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland.
Avatar f tn hello, some of have different symptoms but with me i had high blood pressure, weight gain around my mid section, no periods, wasnt ovulating, facial hair.
959201 tn?1246872893 In april I was diagnosed with PCOS. It explains the sudden weight gain ( well over the year from 73kilos to 93kilos ) Anyway, my partner and I have been reading books on PCOS which is making it easier to understand, having a low GI and low sugar/carbs eating plan helps. Every now and then if I am naughty and eat like potato, bread, sugar ect I get really tight chested and dizzy. My mum who is a nurse said I may be allergic to wheat, sugar because I always have a reaction like this.
Avatar f tn It is a known medication to help with the symptoms of PCOS including weight loss. Allot of the ladies on here find it helps to lose weight with metformin. I've been on it since 9/14/08 1x a day and started in 2x a day in jan 2009. I've lost over 60lbs with it. Meteformin is safe while TTC. Allot of the ladies on here who have gotten pregnant still take it to a certain amount of months (i think its 5 months 20 weeks) because it helps to reduce the risk of miscarriages.
Avatar n tn Hi, Polycystic ovary or PCOS is a symptom complex that includes scanty or irregular menstruation, excessive weight gain & excessive hair & infertility. Weight reduction, birth control pills & metformin will be of help. Other treatment will depend on symptoms like treatment for hair growth, regular periods, desire for child bearing etc. Consult a gynaecologist for an evaluation. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn One symptom of pcos is gradual weight gain from puberty on as well as difficulty losing weight. Another symptom is male hair growth. Birth control can help control the hair growth problem. Other than that the biggest help my doctor gave was to tell me to lose weight.
Avatar n tn Oral contraceptives can cause cessation of what looks like a period, and weight gain. If you have a negative pg test, it's highly unlikely you're pregnant.
Avatar n tn Hello Casey, I start again with an apology that we didn't respond to your Question sooner. We are volunteers and not medical professionals, so please review your situation with your doctor, too. Our forum volunteers are very experienced with Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where we're all dependent on insulin to live. I know very little about Type 2 (a completely different disease that is not autoimmune), but I do know that the American Diabetes Association http://www.diabetes.
Avatar f tn I gained 60 pounds! I don't know that the pcos had much to do with it though. I think it was the icecream I was eating by the pound. (Summer baby!
