Avatar m tn Suggest eating more protein foods, such as yogurt, eggs, cheese, and milk with your meals to help you gain weight and lower your glucose levels. Suggest eating a light snack of protein food with starch just before bed and see if your morning levels go down. If not, stop the snack and speak with your Doctor. Thank you for your question.
Avatar n tn Metformin has been shown to help some, but not all, people lose weight. But, it is not a consistent weight loss medication. However it does have other benefits for women with PCOS, including improving the likelihood of spontaneous ovulation, or making women who need clomid to help them ovulate more sensitive to clomid. Are your periods regular? What are your goals - weight loss? Pregnancy? If weight loss, a nutritionist might be helpful.
Avatar f tn Hi, it depends on the treatment I guess, but I don't think you should expect any weight gain. Metformin will help with weight loss - I don't have any weight to shed, but Met really helps with appetite and maintainance. I also find Yasmin (BCP) harmless in this respect: I gain weight very easily usually and struggle to maintain it off, but Yasmin never caused any problems in this respect, I'd say on the contrary.
Avatar m tn i have all the symptons the majorrr weight gain, excess hair growth, acne, and thinning hair. Will metformin help all my symptoms?
Avatar m tn topamax is not an atypical antipsychotic rather an off-label anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug to stabilize BP. Strange one of the side effects is anorexia (loss of appetite). The only drug i know which doesn't cause weight gain is lamotrigine. But aside from it all the AC's, lithium, AP's even AD's cause weight gain. In short all BP drugs increase weight. That's a price we pay. I recall once Oprah had a program for BP and all the guests were rather heavy weight persons.

1447404 tn?1284604228 Birth control can sometimes cause weight gain...but not every woman is the same. I never had weight gain with Yasmin. Sleepiness is not a side affect of metformin. And also, not every woman who has PCOS has diabetes. As far has the birth control, it did lighten my period and made it shorter as well. I never had breakthrough bleeding with it. My body reacts to medications very well...I've never had any bad side affects from anything I took.
1573438 tn?1295963258 Metformin can cause light weight gain, but 12 pounds in less than two months is more than light in my opinion. Are you sure you haven't endulged a little over the holidays? I thought I was being good during this time, but thinking back, I ate too much!
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with PCOS in August of 2010 and was put on Metformin, one pill a day to help regulate my menstrual. I have been very active and lost 100 lbs before being diagnosed, and so exercise and eating healthy are not a new thing to me. I exercise 6 days a week, and since being on Meformin. The medication is working with one problem, but I'm not sure why it isn't helping in the other area of weight. I heard that people loose weight with Metformin! So I'm stuck as what to do??
Avatar n tn Should I be concerned that the medicine may be making the problem worse? Also is there anything she should eat/take to gain weight without raising her glucose level?
Avatar f tn Metformin helps regulate insulin levels and therefore correct the hormone imbalance that might be causing the weight gain and infertility. I am not sure Metformin will help you lose weight unless you are exercising and watching your diet, but regulating your insulin will help get your body on track to losing weight more effectively.
Avatar f tn I never ever gained weight. I think what triggered the weight gain for me was stress. I believe I have always had pcos since I wouldn't get a period for several months. But, I think what made the side effects so bad was the sudden stress. Now I am about 195lbs and I can't seem to shake the weight and it has been very very difficult for us to get pregnant.
Avatar f tn Why exactly does this medication cause diabetes? I was told that it cause weight gain, and it was the weight gain which cause diabetes? But I lost 40lbs and my glucose numbers worsened after a year instead of improving. What does that medication do concerning glucose tolerance????
Avatar f tn I don't feel like I''m alone. I'm gonna try so hard this next month to get the weight off, but I'm concerned it will be hard! wanabb: Interesting about metformin...Thanks for passing that along. I know- I'm like is it not enough that we struggle to conceive...now I just feel heavier and no baby! lol.
Avatar f tn Do you know what really works during or having PCOS, what type of exercise or food can I eat to keep a healthy body weight. I'm 35 now, and Since I was 28 I gain lot of weight, I'm 5'3 my weight is 200 lb, I lost only 10 so far thank God, but I can't get to keep a good diet..I love the sweets, I would love to lose some before starting or continuing getting ready to have kids. Has the South Beach diet work for anyone???
706214 tn?1244523049 If you are overweight even moderate weight loss and exercise will improve the symptoms of PCOS . because weigth gain makes the hormonal imbalance worse. although i hate medicines and their side effects metformin may help with weight loss aswell .
Avatar f tn I am in my 30's and I have always had a normal 3-5 day monthly menstral cycle until the last 4 years I have been having a menstral cycle once every year. I have no idea why. 1434731 tn?1382722384 I still work out and eat right but I would do that without metformin and loose no weight. When I am on metformin I have lost some weight. Its not going to just fall off though.
Avatar f tn I am praying for some answers I have struggled with weight gain and infertility for over 2 yrs now I eat right and exercise daily can't get rid of the weight I am taking pregnitude and vitex any suggestions to help lose this weight naturally? ?
Avatar f tn Yes your right I am basically starving myself to keep my A1c at 6.2. I used to weigh 88 lbs when I was in my 20's and maybe 95 when I was in my 30's - I did not gain any extra weight until I became peri-menupausal and started to enjoy eating. Then my stomach bloated up like I was 6 months pregnant. I did get Metformin from the doctor, but never took them (am afraid of the side-effects) but I should seriously think about trying them.
Avatar f tn Zyprexa out of all the antipsychotics is the most likely to cause weight gain and diabetes so if this cannot be helped through other means you could discuss other available options with your psychiatrist and they could adjust and/or change your medication as needed.
