Metformin and iv contrast dye

Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and iv contrast dye

glucophage

Avatar f tn They took one picture, put in an IV and injected a contrast dye and took another picture. The contrast dye is the same one they put in when you have a kidney x-ray, it is iodine based. It gives you a somewhat unpleasant warm flush feeling for a short time, maybe 1 minute. I needed to make sure I had no blockages in order to try a new drug for my Afib. I had a heart cath 7 years ago and it was good, but they wouldn't let me try Rhythmol until they knew I was still clear.
Avatar n tn Went through the usual battery of tests and after some saline IV and about 3 hours of rest my blood pressure had come down and all tests were fine. They sent me home but I'm still feeling dizzy the next day although nothing as bad as what happened immediately following the test.
Avatar f tn I went into the emergency room complaining of flu like symptons and my chest ached, beathing badly. I was given several bottles of IV and wasnt voiding. I was given contrast dye to check for blood clots in the lungs?? From there it was all down hill and from there i was sent to ICU. Kidney failure, respiratory failure. I am still in my fortys and always healthy as a horse. My gut is telling me they have me to much contrast dye and that caused me to go down hill??
Avatar n tn I stopped metformin abruptly and started birth control around the same week I stopped the metformin, and so suddenly and intensely felt so much pain like I was dying. Its been 3 months and I haven't gotten better, I used to be so happy and hopefull now I feel completely hopeless, uneasy, and cannot enjoy anything. Will I ever get better??!!
Avatar n tn I had an IV inserted for contrast dye for an MRI. Now the area is a lump, swollen, red , and itchy. Any ideas what to do?
765921 tn?1240405239 But if I have it with and without, then do I go in and have the first MRI just normal, and then they hook me up to an IV or however they do the contrast dye stuff, and then put me back in the MRI machine to do it again? I just want to know what exactly to expect. To me, this sounds like the only way to do it unless it is two different sessions. I had a nerve conduction study and EMG on my right arm in January, and it came back completely normal.
Avatar f tn However, they told me that this dye is a different type. I had no problems with the dye. I liked the cool cloth on my eyes and music...but it is time consuming and the breathing is an issue, but just try to relax and you will do fine. Trust me I am a very fearful person and I was able to do it, so you can too. Let us know how it goes. Ohhh and ask for a copy of the disk...cool pictures!
Avatar f tn Not sure how many there were, but I heard the nurse who did my IV speak, she was really nice and reassuring. They put in the dye through my IV, so they didn't have to inject my arm with it, and they kept asking me how I felt (I'm guessing this is following the "high risk" note on my chart). I did feel the warmth that everyone spoke of, which was really weird and kind of tingly.
Avatar f tn If you only had the oral contrast (not dye that was injected through an IV) then it should not cause kidney pain. Oral contrast is excreted via the intestine (with a bowel movement) and would not affect kidney functions. Oral contrast can however cause abdominal cramping and pain. Is it possible that the pain you feel is not necessarily your kidney but your abdomen? I would give it a day or so and if the pain persists then I would let your doctor know.
Avatar n tn i had abdominal CT scan last week , and the nurse tried to use my right arm vein to install the IV if i say its name right { i mean the plastic injection unit } , she failled then she turned to the left hand vein and installed the IV , and in the middle of CT she came in and injected the dye in the IV , when i came home the pain started in my left arm elbow and 2 days after that the swelling about 15 cm started with the pain around the elbow ,i thought it maybe infection and took antibiotec Aug
Avatar f tn If you are a diabetic and on Metformin DO NOT get a contrast CT without talking to your doctor first because you will have to stop taking your Metformin before and after the CT so you don't risk kidney damage. They didn't tell us that either. Luckily I learned about it before something bad happened. Curious to see how it all turns out on Monday!
778803 tn?1244640352 There are ways to test patients with an IVP dye allergy. I am allergic to IVP dye and I have taken Prednisone and Benadryl prior to procedures and I have not had any reaction. I believe there are newer contrast dyes that have significantly fewer reactions than the older iodine based contrast material. Regardless, if only for your peace of mind you should follow up with someone - your PCP or another specialist.
Avatar f tn The MRI with contrast provides a clearer image, albeit at some risk due to dye toxicity and adverse reactions to the dye. It's a matter of risk benefit. For most diagnostic purposes an MRI without dye contrast is sufficient, however if your physician suggests such a procedure he has good reason.
Avatar f tn A cardiac MRI is no different than one of any other part of your body except a contrast dye is often used and sometimes a drug is used in conjunction with the dye to make your heart beat harder. The dye will be introduced thru an IV at the appropriatetime during the test. During the time in the tube, you'll hear intermittent hammering as the magnetic coil is energized, kind of like a jackhammer sound. They will either offer you ear plugs or a headset to deaden the noise.
768754 tn?1373918737 ve read some negative things online about what contrast dye can do to the liver and kidneys. My hepatologist ordered a creatinine screen prior. I assume this is to check kidney function. I'm a little nervous but believe my hepatologist wouldn't order this if he didn't think it was safe. I'm wondering if anyone who's had this procedure would be willing to share their experience. Any side effects? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Hi eileen, I'm new to this forum, just read about your test. How did it go? I know this is a little late, wish I saw this before now. Anyway, I too have had 3 ct scans; at which time i was in the hospital for all of them. Two of them were with the dye, and one without. All of them were abdominal. At that time, I had to drink that "horrible" stuff, and have an IV. I hate IV's and also my veins were collasped. I was also fighting being dx with luekemia.
Avatar m tn CT can reveal blood flow in your brain and show aneurysm location. Sometimes a dye may be injected into a vein to highlight blood flow in your arteries and veins, CT angiogram and provide additional detail regarding appearance of brain aneurysm. MRI can create detailed images of your brain and show aneurysm’s location. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn I have a Brain MRI with R/O contrast scheduled and I'm freaking out!! Anyone ever have this done? I've never had an MRI, let alone IV or any contrast. Of course I have anxiety and I'm freaking out about the procedure. What does it feel like? How long do you feel it go through you? Any side effects? Any dangers? How does one know if they are allergic to the contrast? Please help me understand a little better and calm down. Thank you!!!!!!
Avatar n tn When taking catscan or mri (s) My parents both had a bad reaction to iodine and they ate shell fish for so many years. ????????????What, is the dye made of.. . maybe it was old dye or dirty dye?
Avatar f tn I went to the ER last night for chest pains and to rule out a pulmonary embolism, they wanted to give me a CT with contrast dye. I had a pretty severe allergic reaction to the contrast dye the last time I had a CT, which was about 3.5 years ago (throat swelled up, got beat red, blood pressure dropped. They pulled me out and gave me some oxygen and epi and I felt better.) Since then, I have been told to avoid contrast dye except for in "life or death" situations.
Avatar f tn Please help, I was admitted to the hospital and they tagged me as sepsis. I have them my medication and one included phentermine, a diet pill. Alone with that why would they check my lungs and give me contrast?? Wouldn't they check my kidneys first and wouldn't they avoid all together contrast dye if they labeled me with sepsis?? Being that my understanding Sepsis can damage kidneys and to top it off taking a diet pill??
Avatar n tn If one is having a CT Scan with Contrast [dye] the diabetes medication Metformin [glucophage] must be stopped 48 hrs prior then a Serum Creatinine test performed 48 hrs later before one restarts.
Avatar n tn msjazz is right, the 'oral' contrast is used so the radiologist can see the GI tract and such (it helps visualize it better and can identify abnormalities better than without). The IV contrast is used to highlight and identify other organs (for instance, kidneys, etc.) that will not be visible easily without it (it can help identify abnormalities that was as well).
Avatar f tn I have never undergone a CT scan, and the one with the contrast dye really worries me, especially after reading some of the possible sensations, side-effects and risks of injecting the dye. Why did the urologist order both the normal CT scan AND the one with contrast dye? What are the benefits of the CT scan with contrast dye compared to an MRI? I really do not like the idea of them injecting me with some kind of dye especially when I read and hear that this is not without any risks.
Avatar n tn Can this procedure be done without the IV contrast? A family member had the same test done and suffered serious allergic reaction to the material.
