Common Questions and Answers about Medroxyprogesterone therapy

depo-provera

873416 tn?1250338946 I am currently on Day 4 of a 14 day therapy of medroxyprogesterone. I have been on BCP for 12 years and went off on 02/23/2009. 7 weeks later and no period I went to my doctor who put me on Provera to hopefully jump start my period. Once it comes I am to start charting for 3 cycles and then return for analysis. So once I start menses then I will start to track. That's why there is nothing on here yet.
Avatar f tn I am 63 years old and 8 Years ago I stopped having periods and haven't had any problems with hot flashes or anything that goes along with menopause. I have never taken any hormones, but just this week my GYN prescrivbed Medroxyprogesterone 2.5 mgs to help keep something "down there" (uterus, endometrium???) from thickening. Do you know how much this would raise my chances of getting breast cancer?
1344197 tn?1392822771 It should be noted that the data at this point does not show an increase in breast cancer risk in patients taking estrogen alone. Researchers suggest women considering hormone therapy for relief of menopausal symptoms should continue to be counseled that thy should use the lowest effective dose, for the shortest period of time. 15714039 tn?1442454488 I am a 46 year old male and had been on a regimen of taking depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) starting from 2002 until I quit @ 2009. I got married and found the woman of my dreams. I also am taking a medicinal pill cocktail of Atenolol, Norvasc, Wellbutrin, Topamax, Lamotragin, Abilify, and Cymbalta. I also suffer from Bi-polar and have been on some od these meds and others for @ 15 years. I do know that I have to take most/some of these and that the SSRI's do/can cause ED.
Avatar n tn Hello again, I just asked her and she said she takes them seperately. EQUIN 0.625MG (estrogen) and MEDROXYPROGESTERONE 5 (5mg). She also reminded me to tell you that she is menopausal and that her ovaries do not produce hormones anymore. Please tell me if you have any suggestions with regard to the information I have given you. Thank you.
Avatar n tn 625 mg in combination with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 2.5 mg daily (versus placebo). The primary outcome of the trial was coronary heart disease (CHD); hip fractures were a designated secondary outcome and invasive breast cancer was a designated primary adverse outcome. Additional outcomes are listed in the article.
Avatar n tn Other types of therapy that may be helpful are cognitive/behavioral and marital therapies. Certain medications have been proposed, but poorly studied for sexual compulsions. SSRI (serotonin specific reuptake inhibitor) such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Celexa which reduce the libido in some persons may also help with compulsive sexual activity. Medroxyprogesterone acetate diminishes libido in men and thus enables the person better control sexually addictive behavior.
135691 tn?1271100723 I've been reading quite a bit lately about avoiding Estrogen replacement therapy while undergoing chemo, mainly Taxol. I was prescribed Premarin, at the highest dosage, all throughout my treatment and no one seemed concerned. What is the reason for not using ERT during chemo? Have you heard of this before?
Avatar f tn Typically, this is achieved initially using hormonal contraception. This can also be accomplished with progestational agents (i.e., medroxyprogesterone), danazol, gestrinone, or gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH), as well as other less well-known agents. These agents are generally used if oral contraceptives and NSAIDs are ineffective. GnRH can be combined with estrogen and progestogen (add-back therapy) without loss of efficacy but with fewer hypoestrogenic symptoms.
Avatar f tn I have read that estrogen with out Progesterone, is not safe. I am talking about bio-identical hormone therapy, which is very safe, you can get the bio-identical progesterone cream at any health food store. I would sure do this if you plan on taking any kind of "synthetic" Estrogen.

Avatar n tn DebiR, It sounds very low to me, too. My compounding pharmacist prefers using saliva tests and so that is what he is familiar with, so I had to "study up" on the results of the blood tests. Estrodial should, or could be anywhere from 50 to something like 250. Mine was 50 in October. According to Dr. Uzzi Reiss, "Natural Hormone Therapy" ( I will double check on that title) Progesterone runs in the teens. He even has women on progesterone producing levels as high as 18.
Avatar f tn My Gyno absolutely swears by hormone therapy. I was under the impression that there would be a gradual improvement. I still haven't seen that much relief. I am tired of having a damp neck. When the hot flash is over and the cold sweat hits I feel like I just came off a soccer field at half time. My face doesn't get red so nobody knows that I'm having a flash, I just look like a sweat hog.
Avatar f tn Persistent irregular bleeding can be treated by administering the subsequent dose earlier or by prescribing temporary low-dose estrogen therapy. Because DMPA persists in the body for several months in women who have used it on a long-term basis, it can delay the return to fertility. Approximately 70% of former users desiring pregnancy conceive within 12 months, and 90% of former users conceive within 24 months.
Avatar f tn Provera is also prescribed to prevent abnormal growth of the uterine lining in women taking estrogen replacement therapy. Other forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and prescribed in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Some doctors prescribe Provera to treat endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual tension, sexual aggressive behavior in men, and sleep apnea (temporary failure to breathe while sleeping). Avatar n tn During my previous years on hormone therapy, I did notice that about 3 days after starting the medroxyprogesterone each month, the hot flashes would come back and I would several times awaken in the middle of the night or in the morning with the feeling that I could not breathe enough air. I would need to get up and do something to burn off some excess energy, go outside or near a window to get fresh air, and then prop myself up in order to get back to sleep after about a half an hour.
Avatar f tn Everything was fine for a while but around May 2013 my period which had been regular for seven years disappeared. In October 2013 my GYN medroxyprogesterone acetate to restart my cycle which restarted irregularly but was less heavy than previously and has since evened out to be near regular again. October 2013 another leg/groin abscess appeared and was drained and packed by a surgeon; again I took antibiotics to help with the infection. It healed well within a couple of weeks.
158939 tn?1274918797 In general, thyroid hormone suppression therapy is targeted towards distinct levels of TSH suppression. Therapy at the greatest extreme aims to suppress TSH to an undetectable level, usually expressed as being less than 0.01 mU/L. Therapy at more moderate levels aims to suppress TSH either to just below the normal range (expressed as 0.1 - 0.5 mU/L) or the lower end of the normal range (expressed as 0.5 - 1.0 mU/L)." http://www.thyroid-cancer.
Avatar n tn Hormone therapy may be used for moderate to severe menopausal symptoms. For women who have had a hysterectomy, estrogen should be used alone, orally or as a transdermal patch, lotion, or gel. Women who have a uterus, if given any type of estrogen, are also given a progestin (as combination therapy) because unopposed estrogen increases risk of endometrial cancer. For most women, risks of oral hormone therapy outweigh benefits.

Avatar n tn c on 12/12/07, and i haven't been handling it very well. my husband and i are in therapy to help us through it. this was my first pregnancy. i bled 4 days after the procedure and then didn't have a period until march which was VERY light, 2 weeks later i started bleeding again a little heavier, but still light and that lasted for 2 weeks. now i am bleeding again but it's VERY heavy. it's very hard to accept the loss mentally when my body is still so crazy. has anyone experienced this?
Avatar n tn He or she might put you on an iron rich food or therapy to restore the levels to give a good quality on life while finding out whats the deal with the heavy or longer period issue. It is not a burden at all to get back your iron either way. the most important thing is to find the reason why you are lving this...and from there take action. Good health to you! Take good care!
