Medroxyprogesterone estrogen

Common Questions and Answers about Medroxyprogesterone estrogen

2051102 tn?1330321233 Medroxyprogesterone is also used to prevent overgrowth of the lining of the uterus (womb) and may decrease the risk of cancer of the uterus in patients who are taking estrogen. Medroxyprogesterone is in a class of medications called progestins. It works by stopping the growth of the lining of the uterus and by causing the uterus to produce certain hormones.
135691 tn?1271100723 Sorry to barge in here...but I have been following along with Becky regarding this issue. (difficult surgical menopause, age 49, surgery 6 months ago due to complex cysts, no ovca but very interested in this issue now as a result). I do question the safety of estrogen for us ALL. I noticed you said "...I would consider estrogen, low dose and without the addition of progesterone" and I wondered if you could perhaps expand on why no progesterone? Or are you referring to progestin?
Avatar f tn The Women's Health Initiative showed that combined HRT as Prempro (conjugated estrogen plus progestin formulation medroxyprogesterone acetate) increased the risk of breast cancer. Estrogen taken without a progestin (Premarin) did not increase risk of breast cancer. But you are correct that a progestin or progesterone needs to be taken with estrogen to protect the uterine lining from proliferation and risk of hyperplasia or cancer.
1344197 tn?1392822771 Follow-up analysis of data collected for the Women’s Health Initiative study of postmenpausal women has shown an increase risk of breast cancer in women taking combined estrogen and progesterone. The findings suggest there is an increased risk of invasive breast cancer, breast cancer presenting with positive lymph nodes, and breast cancer related deaths.
Avatar n tn Also, is there any other health problems that may arise because of my estrogen taking? I was taking medroxyprogesterone but have ceased as I believe it can eliminate your ability to produce sperm. The reason I was taking this was because of its assistance in breast growth in transsexuals.
Avatar n tn Hello again, I just asked her and she said she takes them seperately. EQUIN 0.625MG (estrogen) and MEDROXYPROGESTERONE 5 (5mg). She also reminded me to tell you that she is menopausal and that her ovaries do not produce hormones anymore. Please tell me if you have any suggestions with regard to the information I have given you. Thank you.
Avatar n tn My doctor precribed me medroxyprogesterone because I haven't had my period in 44 days. Took a pregnancy test today at the dr office and it was negative. They are putting me on this to induce a period. Has anyone ever taken this before? How long does it take for your period to come? I have six pills one per day. Also, any successful pregnancies soon after this drug was taken? Thanks!
Avatar n tn July 10, 2002 Women's Health Initiative Reports New Risk/Benefit Information for Estrogen/Progestin Combination Conjugated estrogens are currently indicated for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and prevention of osteoporosis. Use of conjugated estrogens for the prevention of other chronic diseases, as well as their potential negative effects on women's health, has been debated.
Avatar f tn ok so i had a DNC done 7 weeks ago. the baby was dead and i hadn't had a miscarriage yet so they had to go in and take it out. well its been 7 weeks like i said and on the 19 of last month i went in to the ER because i was bleeding quite a bit and they put me on 10mg of Medroxyprogesterone or a more common name, provera.
Avatar f tn I have been on HRT using Climara patch plus daily medroxyprogesterone. I was traveling out of the country & forgot to take the progesterone tabs for 4-5 days, was still wearing the patch. How will this effect me? Is there a way to make up for it or should I just take the patch off for a week to balance things out? I was told that unopposed estrogen would cause an increase risk in uterine cancer but don't know if this includes this sort of time.
Avatar n tn talked with gyn assistant, and gyn thinks the problem is LACK of estrogen. Ok, I was put on the depo to stop the estrogen to stop cycling, so first it's too much estrogen, now it's not enough!? ((cyber-scream)) How is it that the apparent solution to hormone problems is to add MORE hormones?! I feel like a guinea pig! On top of it, she wants to use Premarin since I don't react well to synthetics, and she doesn't think synthetics will be effective.
Avatar f tn Advantages DMPA does not produce the serious adverse effects of estrogen, such as thromboembolism. Diminished anemia occurs. Dysmenorrhea is decreased. The risks of endometrial and ovarian cancer are decreased. It contains no estrogen, thus making it suitable for women who cannot or will not take estrogen products. It also is safe for breastfeeding mothers. Disadvantages Disruption of the menstrual cycle to eventual amenorrhea occurs in 50% of women within the first year.
Avatar f tn PROVERA IS NOT A BIRTH CONTROL Provera is used to treat abnormal menstruation (periods) or irregular vaginal bleeding. Medroxyprogesterone is also used to bring on a normal menstrual cycle in women who menstruated normally in the past but have not menstruated for at least 6 months and who are not pregnant or undergoing menopause (change of life).
Avatar n tn I had my thyroid w/free uptake, cortisol, testosterone, estrogen and progesterone checked. I eat 1200-1500 cal a day and do between 5-8miles a day. Progesterone is the only thing out of balance. Doesn't it seem like alot to take the Provera and the birth control together?? I read that blood clots can happen at high doses. If I keep taking the Ortho Cept by it's self will my progesterone eventually go up? I filled the script for Provera but asked for generic so I was given Medroxyprogesterone.
Avatar n tn i took the depo for 4 years and i had to go on a strong b/c pill with lots of estrogen to get mine started and it still took almost 6 months. if you are wanting to conecive then i would go see your obgyn as soon as possible so you can get to working on getting your cycles started back up. the chances of conceiving without your af are slim. i dont think the removal of the cyst has anything to do with you not having a af it is all the depo.
Avatar f tn Typically, this is achieved initially using hormonal contraception. This can also be accomplished with progestational agents (i.e., medroxyprogesterone), danazol, gestrinone, or gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH), as well as other less well-known agents. These agents are generally used if oral contraceptives and NSAIDs are ineffective. GnRH can be combined with estrogen and progestogen (add-back therapy) without loss of efficacy but with fewer hypoestrogenic symptoms.
Avatar f tn so doc gave me antibiotics for it. I am to take 5 mg Medroxyprogesterone twice a day for 5 days. He said after I take it if I still have not gotten my period then he would make me come back for blood work. I guess to check for hormone problems or ovaries. I am really scared and worried. This is my first time being late with my period..other than 3 other times and those times I was pregnant with our 3 kids. Symptoms I have had is my whole body will feel hot..
Avatar f tn Provera is also prescribed to prevent abnormal growth of the uterine lining in women taking estrogen replacement therapy. Other forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and prescribed in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Some doctors prescribe Provera to treat endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual tension, sexual aggressive behavior in men, and sleep apnea (temporary failure to breathe while sleeping). Avatar n tn DebiR, It sounds very low to me, too. My compounding pharmacist prefers using saliva tests and so that is what he is familiar with, so I had to "study up" on the results of the blood tests. Estrodial should, or could be anywhere from 50 to something like 250. Mine was 50 in October. According to Dr. Uzzi Reiss, "Natural Hormone Therapy" ( I will double check on that title) Progesterone runs in the teens. He even has women on progesterone producing levels as high as 18.
Avatar f tn The two most common causes of menorrhagia are hormone imbalance and uterine fibroids Hormonal Imbalanceis an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and progesterone is the most common cause of menorrhagia. In order to build up your endometrial lining, your body releases estrogen and progesterone. If these hormones become imbalanced, your endometrium can continue to build up and bleed excessively. Uterine Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that form inside your uterus.
Avatar f tn Very confused on the progesterone and estrogen thing? The Dr gave me medrxyprogeserone? Wouldnt that be a doube wammie with taking synthroid? Don't really want to take it because it says it can cause spotting and hair loose? I'm having that now! I'm loosing way more then normal! Sorry about the long post, just wish I was more knowledgable about the whole thing and could get some resolution. Thanks for listening, any insight would be much appreciated...
Avatar n tn I have seen a doctor about this and have been tested for many things including thyroid disorders, pituitary problems genetic tests and hormone imbalances. I have somewhat low estrogen (29) for my age and somewhat high FSH (18). I do not have any other issues than these either. I don't know if this will definitely lead me to early menopause and other health problems or if not having a period really isn't that big of a deal. I do not have any other symptoms other than not having a period either.
2035763 tn?1329566863 So I am in pain from all the bad symptoms without the benefit of the monthly cleaning out if you know what I mean. I called my doctor and was put on medroxyprogesterone for 10 days. I am now 14 days out after starting the meds, so 4 days after stopping and no period yet. What happens next? Does anyone know? If the medroxyprogresterone doesn't work, what do they do now? I feel there is someting wrong because I am having period symptoms and no period.
Avatar n tn It is also known that Medroxyprogesterone negates the benefits that Estrogen gives the heart. That is another reason to switch to the Prometrium that has been O.K. for HRT use in this country.
Avatar n tn I do not mean to scare you, but I think it is important to note, that there is a reason that they stopped using medroxyprogesterone as a pregnancy test... one because there are faster ways, now... and secondly, because it can cause birth defects when taken early in pregnancy (specifically to the genital area). Given how little time you have been taking it, though, I would say that risk is very minimal, even if you are pregnant.
Avatar n tn Diseases of the rectum such as hemorrhoids, fissures (tears), fistulas, or rectal prolapse may initially cause symptoms of pruritis ani. Women may have pruritis ani caused by a vaginal discharge or low estrogen levels if perimenopausal or postmenopausal. Excessive coffee drinking is also a known cause. However many times the cause cannot be identified. (ideopathic).
Avatar n tn I had my IUI done in that cycle. First week after the IUI, the progestrone level was 21.5 and my estrogen level was 200. But still no luck. I am having 30 day cycle now that I started taking Clomid. I use to have irregular periods before that. I got my last period on Nov 10th, and I started taking Clomid from Day 4. My doctor suggested that when I will start to ovulate, then I shd take my HCG injection. I want to know, what is use of HCG injection? And are there any side effects?
Avatar n tn erythropoietin, VEGF, IGF, FGF, a molecule from the estrogen family (e.g., 17-#-estradiol, estrone, estriol, an estradiol derivative, estradiol valerate, estradiol cypionate, mestranol, quinestrol), a molecule from the progestin-family (e.g., progesterone, hydroxyprogesterone caroate, medroxyprogesterone acetate), a statin (e.g. Simvastatin, Atorvastatin), and an antidiabetic agent (e.g., Rosiglitazone).
Avatar n tn It is a hormone like progesterone, one of the hormones that regulates the menstrual cycle. It is called depot- medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). A shot of DMPA in the buttock or arm can prevent pregnancy for 12 weeks. "The Shot": keeps the ovaries from releasing eggs thickens cervical mucus to keep sperm from joining eggs. 99.7% Effective Against Pregnancy The Shot is one of the most effective reversible methods of birth control.
Avatar n tn Implanon, depot medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) and Norplant used to prevent ovulation are well known for causing depressive moods and emotional lability, Stemetil is used for nausea and is related to medications used in psychiatry (phenothiazines) which cause very troublesome side effects; that is the reason you were given Cogentin. The effects of Implanon should wear off soon. Neither of these medication should have permanent consequences.
