Common Questions and Answers about Maxalt rebound headache

maxalt

Avatar n tn I have a friend that has dealt with debilitating migraines all of her life and she swears that the prescription drug Maxalt is the only thing that is effective for her and she has tried many medications including imitrex. She told me they are dissolvable tablets such that if you get sick and vomit, you won't vomit up the medication. I will get a migraine headache every once in a blue moon and I take the regular OTC stuff for it.
1334481 tn?1276697078 Dear NM, Congratulation on achieving your degree. The Maxalt can cause what is called a rebound headache/migraine from overuse. I've not heard of being immune to it. Here are a couple of thoughts that might help you: 1) You and your Doctor may need to consider upping the dosage of topomax. My wife increased her dosage from 50mg to 100mg. At the 50mg dose we did notice a decrease in total number of monthly migraines after discounting for weather from the 25mg dose.
Avatar f tn Rebound headaches occur with more than 3 times a week usage of over-the-counter pain medications. This is commonly experienced by a lot of headache sufferers. There is also a migraine /headache tracker here in Medhelp that may help you determine your possible triggers to avoid. Take care and do keep us posted.
655875 tn?1295695107 m still very much sick to my stomach, but no headache. I will NEVER run out of migraine medicine like that again. Maxalt is the only thing that works well for my headaches. My last few migraines have been giving me the chills and sweats. I wonder why that is. I'm so grateful for my friend and for Maxalt!
5848391 tn?1380728642 I've had a headache for over two weeks that is excruciating. It is either right behind my eyes, or in the back of my neck. It feels like someone is squeezing my brain. Sometimes it hurts so much that it makes me nauseous. I've tried taking prescription ibuprofen but it doesn't help. Only going to sleep and hoping that it is gone when I wake up helps. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this? Thanks!
Avatar f tn I am addicted to Hydrocodone and have been "off and on" for about 3 years. Sometimes I go through periods of not taking them, or taking very little. But in the last few months I've been going on binges. I'd take 3-4 5/500s a day at the most. I am now at the end of one of those binges. I managed to get off them a few months ago and was miserable physically for a good three weeks. Now I want to taper off and STOP.
Avatar f tn If you do the brain cells get used to them and then you get rebound headache. Tylenol will give you rebound headache as well. I don't take Tylenol at all anymore for that reason.
937140 tn?1246013288 Start a headache diary. Write down the time the headache started, how long it lasted, what you did to try and treat it (meds, heat, cold...), anything you think may have triggered the headache, what type of pain the headache was (throbbing, puslating, ice pick, tight...), where the pain was located and how bad the pain was on a 1-10 scale. Good luck... of and few days ago I believe a dr here on med help posted some info on headaches/migranes...
Avatar m tn Some times she remains normal for 2 to 3 months but some time headache occurs twice a week. The headache usually changes its position i.e. some times on right side of head and some times on left side. Some times in Forehead and other time in back of the head. She takes PONSTON tablet for relief. During Headache its blood Pressure becomes low. She is also Low Blood Pressure Patient. Some times vomiting also occur during headache. Please give me your expert opinion for this problem.
1102283 tn?1257817472 I personally use Zomig Nasal Spray and find it works extremely well. I also have found great success with Maxalt-MLTs. Although, everyone is different and all of the triptans on the market have been proven effective in clinical trials, so please discuss with the doctor in the clinic which triptan would be the most appropriate in your situation. Although, if you want to go in suggesting something...
Avatar f tn Please help me with my mystery diagnosis...I am ready to pitch a tent and live at the ER!! 32yo female, 120lbs, 5'3" Normally active & healthy (until this past month) Phoenix, AZ I have lived with mild to moderate headaches 4-5 days per week for the past several years. Pain managed by Advil. However, about a month ago, I started having excruciating, debilitating headaches, and stopped taking Advil because I was taking 600-800mg a day to get some relief.
1385123 tn?1279511480 It started out just dull and annoying and has now progressed into quite an intense pain with nausea and a tingling sensation in my hands and arms within the last week. I constantly have a headache whether it is the dull pain, or so excruciating that I vomit from the pain. I have tried taking Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and even Excedrin Migraine, none of which even touched on the pain. The only time there is relief is when I am asleep, but once I wake up it comes right back.
Avatar n tn I had Superventricular Tachicardia. My heart would race, I would hyperventilate, then most of the time I would passout. I had heart surgery when I was 15 to correct this irregular heartbeat. Luckily, it was successful. When I was 16, I had my first baby boy. After having him, I started getting migraines. The first one I ever had lasted over 48 hours. I had to get a shot to get rid of it. Since then, I've had too many to count.
Avatar n tn They have been increasing in quantity and severity until about a year and a half ago I had to stop working completely. I am on a combination of darvacet, tramadol, topomax and maxalt. The combination leaves me in bed about 18 hours a day. I have had two MRIs. One with contrast and one without. Neither shows any good reason for my pain. The headache never goes away and I have no idea what makes it hit so hard every few days (room blacked out and crawling to the bathroom). Am I the only one.
Avatar f tn Hello! I am 34 years old for the past 2 years I have been getting nausea with constant headache for 6 days before my period. It's to the point where I'm on zofran and have maxalt for headache. I can't leave my house because I feel like I'm going to vomit but I don't. I guess that's a good thing, lol zofran works. Once I get my period it goes away! Anyone experience this or have any feedback thank you!!!
Avatar f tn It is an excellent pain pill, but if you take it more than two times in a week, you risk severe rebound migraines. That's the only reason I can think of besides it being a narcotic. But you probably need a narcotic, so I agree to look for a neurologist who specializes in headaches. These days, regular doctors are being monitored and penalized for prescribing pain pills. That's probably the real reason.
768044 tn?1294223436 It is much more likely that you are stuck in a pain cycle than a rebound headache cycle right now. I would suggest taking your triptans at the very first sign of the headaches and take them as needed. Do not be afraid to take your triptans! If you are getting more than 15 headaches a month... and 4 headaches a week sounds like more than 15 a month! Then, preventative medications could be an option. Are you currently taking any preventative medications?
Avatar f tn t see why maxalt would be a contender for treatment of chiari induced headache. Just based on the mechanism of action of the drug I feel it could be quite dangerous. Diamox (acetazolamide) has some off label uses but I am still combing through the limited publications on the subject and wouldn't suggest it unless u had very specific imaging and symptoms. Hope that helps!
Avatar f tn As for physical dependency... well, I have heard of the triptan Maxalt causing rebound headaches, which could be considered a type of physical dependency maybe... but, out of all of the triptans, the ONLY triptan that has shown this is Maxalt, not Imitrex. So, Imitrex is not a type of medication that you can become dependent on physically. So please don't worry about becoming dependent on the medication!!! Use it when you are in pain if it works!!
Avatar n tn t take it because everytime i do it gives me such horrible chronic neck pain i cry from it worsening the headache worsening the neck pain like a domino effect till i have to sleep it off then i lose hours of the day. i was just wondering if anyone else has had the problem and has a possible solution.....
Avatar f tn Now my insurance has decided I need to try Imitrex before they will approve coverage for the Maxalt. The Imitrex took about 2 hours to have any effect, but eventually my headache subsided. Since then I have had recurring headaches for 4 days. These are similar to but not quite as painful as headaches I get from consuming too much caffeine (my caffeine tolerance is very low - a chocolate bar eaten over a 3 day period can cause extreme pain). So I am wondering if imitrex contains caffeine.
Avatar m tn Have you looked into Maxalt. I just got out of recovery and Maxalt was given to a lot of the guys who were having migraines due to w/ds. It was also prescribed as long term treatment for those whos migraines didn't go away. I don't know much about it as I have never taken it but I am still in contact with some of the guys from recovery and they seem to get a lot of relief from it. I do know it is expensive without insurance.
2048234 tn?1330814100 Hey scaredmommy - I don't remember how many days you have. I had rebound pain of some sort headaches included well beyond 30 days clean. I had a two week period where I really pondered living the rest of my life in pain and if I could but it did pass. I still have pain but not anywhere along the lines of those two weeks and it is manageable.
Avatar f tn I agree with the rebound headache from the drugs. My two thoughts, one have you tried a strict elimination diet? There are many food triggers for headache one would not think of. Two, please make sure a binocular vision dysfunction is not causing your problems. I have seen many patients with headache everyday and have never had a proper binocular vision assessment.
