Maxalt and rebound headaches

Common Questions and Answers about Maxalt and rebound headaches

maxalt

Avatar n tn I have a friend that has dealt with debilitating migraines all of her life and she swears that the prescription drug Maxalt is the only thing that is effective for her and she has tried many medications including imitrex. She told me they are dissolvable tablets such that if you get sick and vomit, you won't vomit up the medication. I will get a migraine headache every once in a blue moon and I take the regular OTC stuff for it.
Avatar f tn I am 50 now and have migraines off and on since I was 17. I was prescribed fiorinal and it worked! I had suffered almost a week and was so sick but within 15 min of taking it, it was gone. But now, the doctors do not like to give this to me. I have no heart issues. No diabetes. Can you explain?
937140 tn?1246013288 I have frequent migraines and I do take Maxalt and fiornail. They both work well for my headaches. The Maxalt is very expensive, even with medical insurance. I've heard that magnesium will help with the headaches as well, but be sure to check with your doctor first.
Avatar f tn I am addicted to Hydrocodone and have been "off and on" for about 3 years. Sometimes I go through periods of not taking them, or taking very little. But in the last few months I've been going on binges. I'd take 3-4 5/500s a day at the most. I am now at the end of one of those binges. I managed to get off them a few months ago and was miserable physically for a good three weeks. Now I want to taper off and STOP.
Avatar f tn Triptans are a prescription medication that are made especially for migraine headaches and they will not cause rebound headaches. A small percent of people cannot take triptans, and then NSAIDS are often considered as an alternative to triptans. If the Panafren Plus is currently working well to abort your acute migraine attacks and you are not getting rebound headaches or frequent migraine headaches then there would probably be no reason to consider switching to a triptan...
Avatar f tn It is an NSAID like advil is, but there is almost no chance that Naproxen will cause rebound headaches. And, I sometimes will use Metoclopramide along with either of my triptans. Metoclopramide makes the triptans more effective, so I take it when the triptans fail or when they are not completely relieving my symptoms. The Metoclopramide is an antiemetic so it stops nausea and vomiting, and so I always take it if I have nausea with my migraine.
1334481 tn?1276697078 Dear NM, Congratulation on achieving your degree. The Maxalt can cause what is called a rebound headache/migraine from overuse. I've not heard of being immune to it. Here are a couple of thoughts that might help you: 1) You and your Doctor may need to consider upping the dosage of topomax. My wife increased her dosage from 50mg to 100mg. At the 50mg dose we did notice a decrease in total number of monthly migraines after discounting for weather from the 25mg dose.
1125820 tn?1265284446 Over-the-counter analgesics such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and ASA can cause rebound headaches and it is often suggested that migraineurs avoid over-the-counter pain killers. Instead of over-the-counter analgesics, prescription analgesics that are more appropriate for migraine headaches are often prescribed. There is an NSAID called Naproxen that is often prescribed for migraine headaches and Naproxen is less likely to cause rebound headache than the other NSAIDs.
1102283 tn?1257817472 Although, there are other analgesics that can be used if the headaches are very severe such as barbiturates and opiates. These medications are not usually as effective for migraine headaches, and they can have high side-effect profiles and high-dependency profiles. Also, I am fairly sure that barbiturates can cause rebound headaches too. But, for some people these medications can be very useful.
Avatar f tn does either imitrex or maxalt contain caffeine? I was taking Maxalt for migraines and it worked great! Now my insurance has decided I need to try Imitrex before they will approve coverage for the Maxalt. The Imitrex took about 2 hours to have any effect, but eventually my headache subsided. Since then I have had recurring headaches for 4 days.
655875 tn?1295695107 When I take the Maxalt, it will stop the migraine an instant about an hour after taking the medicine. The maxalt has been a miracle drug for my headaches and I normally only have to take one in a day. This is one of the very few medicines that my body will tolerate without any problems. The Maxalt must still be working because I'm still very sick to my stomach. I bet I'd still have the migraine if I didn't take the medicine. I'm so very grateful for my friend.
Avatar f tn A neurologist started me on a 6-day prednisone pack and Maxalt 6 days ago. The Maxalt helps mostly, but I need to take it daily, sometimes twice a day to get relief, which is too much for this drug. 2. Do I have severe sinus headaches with totally normal-looking sinuses? Out of the prednisone, Maxalt, Advil, and Mucinex D, the Mucinex gives me the best relief from my headaches (usually almost all day). 3. Do I have rebound headaches?
Avatar n tn Maxalt Melts were the best for stopping the migraines, but after using them for awhile, I started the rebound headaches after using it. - Plus I take a muscle relaxer for my neck. My neck knots up along with my migraines. I have to use an ice pack for my neck. Now I take Amitriptyline (Elavil) 25mg daily, and Gabapentin (Neurontin) 300mg daily to prevent my Migraines. I started with the Amitriptyline first ...
Avatar n tn ve been getting the headaches/migraines about once every two weeks. I take maxalt and fiorinal and the maxalt works much better. The fiorinal does not make a huge difference, so I rarely take it.
Avatar f tn He is increasing my Topamax by one pill a week for 4 weeks so by the end of those 4 weeks I will be takinng 4 pills a day. No relief. He says they are rebound headaches. I doubt this. So he has one more week to figure this out because I am at the end of my rope. I need some advice PLEASE!
573622 tn?1217279489 I really hate taking pain pills because they seem to give me rebound headaches, and nausea. Just recently I have found that ginger really helps with my migraines and also nausea. I try to eat some everyday and especially if I feel a migraine coming on. Here is my favorite recipe for crystallized ginger: http://homecooking.about.com/od/dessertrecipes/ht/crystalginger.htm Hope this helps!
5848391 tn?1380728642 t realize that long lasting headaches could be a sign of a stroke. I did talk to my doctor about it- I see a naturopath- and she prescribed a whole bunch of supplements. I started taking them and the severity of my headaches have reduced, but I'm still having them. I am supposed to begin craniosacral therapy this week with a different doctor. Maybe I will ask her what she thinks also!
Avatar f tn I haven't been able to identify any triggers besides stress. We took out all of the dietary possibilities and I have noted no changes. I think my major issue is chronic dehydration and poor stress management skills. I tend to internalize! THe 50 mg with Amitriptilne has been a huge help. I was getting migraines 2-3 times a month with tension and stress headaches in between. I'm hopin the pins and needles reduces or goes away as I like this combo so far. Thanks for the help!
Avatar n tn About a year later I began to have periodic headaches. They have been increasing in quantity and severity until about a year and a half ago I had to stop working completely. I am on a combination of darvacet, tramadol, topomax and maxalt. The combination leaves me in bed about 18 hours a day. I have had two MRIs. One with contrast and one without. Neither shows any good reason for my pain.
591470 tn?1218975186 My Neurologist, after two whole years, finally placed me on medication for the headaches. I currently take Maxalt 10 mg), Nortriptyline (75 mg) and Compazine (10 mg). I am hoping that they work, I took one the other day during a Migraine attack, and within an hour it was gone.
Avatar f tn Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community. That is not true. Who told you that? Rebound headaches are a result of OVERUSE of pain killers...Rx and OTC. You have to be taking the pain killers more than twice a week...for a very extended period of time. Or taking more than the directions say. You are most likely dealing with Cluster Migraines.
2048234 tn?1330814100 t remember how many days you have. I had rebound pain of some sort headaches included well beyond 30 days clean. I had a two week period where I really pondered living the rest of my life in pain and if I could but it did pass. I still have pain but not anywhere along the lines of those two weeks and it is manageable.
Avatar f tn Choosing a strategy to manage your migraines depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches, the degree of disability your headaches cause, and your other medical conditions.
Avatar f tn I'm now 20 weeks pregnant and suffer from migraines and daily tension headaches. I get them daily. I was prescribed Fioricet, but everything I've read scares me. I had a friend who took them almost daily due to hormonal headaches which increased with pregnancy and her baby is healthy.
768044 tn?1294223436 If you are getting more than 15 headaches a month... and 4 headaches a week sounds like more than 15 a month! Then, preventative medications could be an option. Are you currently taking any preventative medications? There are 3 first-line daily preventative medications: tricyclic antidepressants (specifically Amitriptyline or Nortriptyline); anticonvulsants (such as valproic acid or topiramate); or beta blockers (such as nadolol or propranolol).
