Avatar m tn How to Naturally Avoid and Remove Dangerous Arterial Plaque The arteries are major blood vessels that the heart uses to pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Over time, arterial walls can become congested with a fatty substance known as plaque. When this happens to a severe point, the arteries may begin to harden and the blood flow can become compromised and ultimately result in a heart attack. Mainstream medicine's approach for treating plaque is to use drugs or surgery.
Avatar n tn The lower your LDL cholesterol, the lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. In fact, it's a better gauge of risk than total blood cholesterol. In general, LDL levels fall into these categories: LDL Cholesterol Levels...
Avatar n tn Homocysteine and C-reactive protein levels are better predictors of a future heart attack than cholesterol. Both are inflammation markers. Inflammation and oxidation cause heart disease. Homocysteine - 6.3umol/L is healthy C Reactive Protein - under 1mg/L is healthy Cholesterol lowering drugs like Lipitor work by inhibiting the enzyme needed to manufacture cholesterol in the liver. However, these drugs also block the manufacture of important nutrients like CoQ10.
Avatar f tn My recommendation is that you start a low-dose statin, Lipitor 20, so that we can get that LDL below 100. High LDL increases your risk of heart attack and stroke and vessel damage. Please let me know if you wish to start the Lipitor." My father was on this medication and weaned himself off because he'd become inactive due to terrible muscle pain. I'm afraid to try it, but would like to reverse this since it's such a new issue.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have same problem with good diet I have total 265, and LDL 196 my doctor prescribe me Lovastatin reduce the risk of heart attack, blood vessel blockage or chest pain. Avatar n tn More than 2-fold increased compared to someone with low CACS, but still a low number (in the range of 5% in 10 years or so). 2. Your cholesterol levels, as measured by the VAP test shows the LDL is in the normal range for someone treated with a statin. However, there is no true limit to how low the LDL should be, as there is a continued benefit towards lower and lower LDL, ie. 100 is better than 130, 70 is better than 100, etc).
Avatar n tn Do we understand what dose is necessary to get these non-LDL lowering benefits? For example, I take 5mg of Lipitor daily. The reason for the dose being so low is that my LDL was low to begin with (91) and I am very sensitive to it (i.e., just 10mg brought it down by 47% to 48).
Avatar n tn I received my blood test last week to find out that all of my cholesterol levels were high risk. Specifically, my cholesterol count was 249. I am 33 years old, don't smoke, and weigh 155. I have a history of high cholesterol in my family. I haven't gone to the doctor in fear that he may prescribe Lipitor or other drugs I don't care to take. Are there other remedies? I have a friend in her 20's that takes Policosinal and it seems to work for her. What should I do?
Avatar f tn Bottomline- you do have risk factors for coronary heart disease, the biggest one being history of heart attack. You need aggressive risk factor modification including a statin.
Avatar n tn and his book I believe was a God send. I take 10 mg lipitor my Dr says not for the cholesterol lowering but for the anti imflamitory benefits, because my t/ cholesterol is 142 ldl 71, hdl 57, tryg/ 68. God Bless, Brian.
Avatar m tn We would expect your LDL would likely be lowered by approx 25-35% with this dose of lipitor (though is variable between patients), so the reduction you describe is likely a combination of both interventions. While aggressive diet modification as your are doing will go a long way to prevent further events and progression of coronary artery disease, I would not recommend stopping the lipitor.
Avatar n tn In the Pravastatin or Atorvastatin Evaluation and Infection Therapy (PROVE IT) trial, patients with acute coronary artery syndromes were enrolled, and pravastatin lowered the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol to 2.46 mmol/l, whereas atorvastatin lowered it to 1.60 mmol/l. Associated with this, there was a lower rate of clinical events (myocardial infarction, revascularisation) over 2 years with atorvastatin than pravastatin (22.4 versus 26.3%, respectively).
Avatar n tn ) Finally, more than 40 trials have been performed to see if lowering cholesterol prevents heart disease. In some trials more people got heart disease, in others fewer. But when all the results were taken together, just as many people died in the treatment groups (those who took cholesterol-lowering drugs) as the control groups (those who did not)." - 5 reasons not to worry about your cholesterol numbers by Chris Kresser.
Avatar n tn s cholesterol sounds about right considering the medication she is on. I take 20 mg of Lipitor a night and 2000 mg of Niaspan. My total cholesterol is 101, HDL 52, LDL 41, Tri are 42. I have had one heart attack. At the time of the MI, my total cholesterol was 198, HDL 32, LDL 139 and triglyceride were 123. For people with existing heart disease, the Optimal LDL is <100 but most Drs now believe that <70 is best. About 30 years, the Drs thought a Total cholesterol of <300 was normal.
Avatar m tn I am little scared if I stop taking Lipitor, does it will occur any heart attack or blockage in arteriy or any other risk for me.
Avatar m tn My age is 77, male. Cardiac history: heart attack (mild) 1981; heart bypass 1992; valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests.
Tbd Hello and thank you for your very basic question. It is very important for everyone to get regular physicals to stay on top of their health and cholesterol screening is often a part of that. One of the trickiest things about monitoring cholesterol is that high cholesterol has no symptoms. You will only know that is high if you have blood drawn and a doctor tells you. But it is essential to keep cholesterol under control to prevent things like heart attack and stroke.
649848 tn?1534633700 High cholesterol leads to hardened arteries that can cause a heart attack or stroke. Most cholesterol is made by the liver, so diet changes have a limited effect on it. Millions of Americans take statins, which reduce cholesterol dramatically and have other effects that more broadly lower the chances of heart trouble. The patents on Lipitor, Zocor and other statins have expired, and they are widely available in generic versions for as little as a dime a day.
Avatar n tn I am very concerned with my cholesterol readings.. my total was 148.. ldl was 100 triglycerides were 52 but my hdl was 37. I am 37 year old female who is thinking she is a walking timebomb with clogged arteries now. & years ago my hdl was 59 but my cholesterol was higher at 176.. why would hdl lower with weightloss and lowering cholesterol.... Is is easily brought back up? Note, I do not eat any fish or nuts..
Avatar m tn It is important to increase you HDL because it is the HDL that binds with the LDL or bad cholesterol, to remove it from your system. Too little and the LDL may build up. Right now your LDL is a good number, but it can change so work on the HDL.
Avatar m tn What is your total cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol).
