Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and heart disease

lipitor

Avatar n tn I assume you are taking 20mg in the morning and 20mg in the evening? This is really pointless. Lipitor is well known to work while you are sleeping, because the Liver makes most cholesterol at this time. Other statin brands can be taken at any time, probably because they sit in the blood for longer or something, but Lipitor strictly instruct you to take in the evening.
Avatar n tn But that is a fenofibrate, not a statin. Have you ever tried the grandfather of statins, Lipitor? Talk to your doctor and get the straight answers.
Avatar f tn Heart Surgeons frequently find cancer in heart patients most likely due to the radiation from the years of heart testing. My mother had Sarcoidosis, cancer, and severe heart disease. Ask your doctor ways to prevent heart disease such as taking fish oil for the Omega 3, possibly adding vitamin B3 as a lot of people are lacking this vitamin and a deficiency of this vitamin can cause different diseases.
Avatar n tn People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
Avatar n tn ve been on niaspam and my dr. thinks I should change to lipitor because of the new drug studies on lipitor. I am a perfect weight, and i'm 63 with no incidents of heart attack but my arteries do show significant arterilosclerosis. I feel healthy and seem great so far! any advice appreciated.
Avatar n tn synchronizer of the bottom ventricles of the heart. He is on maximum medication and has been doing relatively well until about 2 months ago when he started noticebly dragging his right leg and not swinging his right arm. He is also loosing function in his right hand. His cardiologist did a CT scan of the head which was normal, ruling out stroke or brain bleed. His bloodwork was normal. A nuclear stress test has been done & we will receive those results in 2 days.
Avatar m tn even cardiologists and cardiac surgeons get heart disease.
Avatar n tn Recent studies have shown no reductions in death in people over the age of 65 or people with no existing heart disease on statins (regardless of how much their cholesterol was lowered) and no benefit at all in women of any age. It is very important to understand statistics here and the difference between relative risk and absolute risk reduction. Much of the advertising with statins describe a 36% risk reduction in heart attacks. This is a relative risk reduction.
Avatar m tn Q: L.V- DIASTOLIC FUNCTION IMPAIRED RELAXATION >>>>>It appears your heart walls are thickened and that condition provides some rigidity and failure to relax during the heart's filling phase so the filling capacity is impaired reducing the cardiac output. Q: SYSTOLIC FUNCTION - REDUCED >>>>>Systolic function is the pumping phase and the volume is reduced from the normal expected output. Q: DIALATED - L.
907729 tn?1244174363 I am a 41yr old female I have Type II diabetes, hypothyroid, and I have heart disease and heart failure. I am severely obese and have tried many diets and also exercise.. I want to know if I would qualify for the gastric bypass surgery.
Avatar m tn I also have 20-30% blockage in other artery which doctor stated with strong lipitor and diet change it should help this. I am on Lipitor 80 mg. also effient, aspirin, and coreg, which was just changed from atenolol which I had been so tired and drained my doctor switched it. I also take lisinopril, and pepcid and iron because being on blood thinners at my age it caused other issues. I have had several issues with vasalvega sincope since my heart attack I just pass out..
Avatar n tn ve met lots of patients with normal cholesterol and having more disease than me and I have hypercholesterolemia. From a teen (was 46 with first heart attack) I always had high blood pressure, but in those days Doctors just said "oh it's your chemical make up". If I was a teen now, I would be on medication because they know it would damage the arteries over years, causing foam cells. Can anyone please help me with this confusion which has bewildered me since my first heart attack.
519736 tn?1253986826 He has no history of heart disease. the main reason for the lipitor was to raise his good cholesterol. I have no knowledge of these medications, but did look up side effects of statins. If it does happen to be a side effect, how long should he wait to see if this pain resolves itself after stopping the lipitor....any help is appreciated.
Avatar n tn It has also been studied for slowing dementia, and reducing angina, symptoms associated with heart failure and other symptoms associated with heart -related illnesses. I recommend Coen Q10 to all patients with cardiac disease regardless of the presence of myopathy, because I have seen significant benefit in my practice patients. The safety profile is very good.
Avatar m tn I have driven my total Chol down to about 110 and LDL to about 50 by diet (plant based and no oils), in combination with the lipitor and it seems it would be logical to test coming of the 5 mg lipitor for a short period and see if there is an effect on the upper back pain and also check lipids to assess how much of my change is due to lipitor vs diet.
Avatar m tn Beta blockers studies have not shown this and sometimes beta blockers can make the heart worse. Lipitor studies have shown that Lipitor reduces cholesterol and the blockage already there and sometimes cholesterol on the heart valves. I know many doctors that are taking statins in a very low dose that do not even have heart disease (they take it as a precaution). My father takes about 1/4 of the smallest Lipitor dosage. Omega 3 is great for the heart.
Avatar n tn Women on average have 300% lower rates of heart disease than men, despite higher average cholesterol levels. The rate of heart disease in 65 year-old men is 10 times that of 45-year old men. Yet high cholesterol is not a risk factor in men over 65. (In fact, men over 65 with low cholesterol (<150 mg/dL) are twice as likely to die from heart disease as those with normal or even "high" cholesterol.
Avatar f tn There is much controversy about cholesterol, but it is muted because of pharmaceutical financial interests in statins. Half of those who die of strokes or heart attacks have no history of high cholesterol. DeBakey discounted cholesterol. My own doctor pays no attention to it. What is the true role of cholesterol and how should one proceed? I don't know, but I won't take Lipitor.
Avatar f tn Any information would be helpful/I have had open heart surgery and a mitral valve replacement, stents, 2heart attacks, and coronary artery disease. im on warfarin, lipitor and plavix. im looking for other things to do to improve my heart health, like going to gym, eliminating salt intake and dietry changes and im just concerned with safety and drug interactions.will taking fish oil, flaxseed, and making parsley herbal tea be safe or should they be avoided?.

Avatar n tn I cycle quite a bit now after finding out about the heart disease. Total Cholestrol 121, LDL 61, HDL fluctuates between 36 and 45. Medications on: Metroprolol 25MG to control tachycardia, Lipitor 20MG, Niaspan 1000MG, Nexium 40MG, 81MG aspirin every three days because once a day caused petechia, Krill oil, Depakote 125MG and Klonopin .5MG at bedtime. Had calcium score done a few months ago and score went from 20 (two years ago) to 19 (now).
Avatar n tn My husband has no history of MI and no hx of heart disease. He is on Lipitor and his cholesterol is great now. Also he has psoriatic arthritis and since that is an autoimmune disease could that be part of the problem at all? Can you please explain all of this to us?
Avatar n tn A solide nodule was discovered a year and half ago, and in connection therewith I also became diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. At that time I hade started taking Lipitor, 10 mg, for high cholesterol. My endoctrinologist, an expert on thyroids, decided against thyroid hormone replacement therapy. I am supposed to see him once a year, but I see a surgeon twice a year to check on the nodule.
Avatar f tn s and abn findings on a liver CT) that the chances of progression is slight and could take years or may never occur. Heart disease and or a stroke can occur sooner if your cholesterol levels continue to climb. Are both your PCP and Rhum communication with each other and you? All three of you should be include in your health care choice. These autoimmune issues are varied and random. It is a crap shoot to which direction of care to take.
