Common Questions and Answers about Kidney stones and asparagus

Avatar n tn I have had a 5mm kidney stone and now have about 5 smaller ones. I have started medication for prevention and been told that I need to change my diet to avoid purines & oxalic acid. I am also hypoglycemic. In researching what I can/cannot eat, I am getting conflicting information. Different websites list the content of these materials at differing amounts. The USDA will say a type of food is at 1 level and another will say something totally different.

I understand they need a chicken or lamb-based diet (no beef) and wonder what other dietary measures we need to take. Are there any supplements we should give him to help prevent stone formation? Maggie, our other pup, is a dal x lab mix, so is it correct to assume she likely has the same tendency and should be treated the same as Doc?

Avatar n tn The overall goal of medical treatment is to dissolve formed stones and prevent new stones from forming. Citrate or bicarbonate is used to alkalinize the urine. Uric acid has 4 ionizable hydrogen ions (positions 1, 3, 7, and 9). Only the hydrogen ion on position 9 (pKa = 5.8) is ionizable at physiologic pH. Sodium urate is 15 times more soluble than uric acid. When pH equals pKa (5.8), uric acid and sodium urate are present in equal quantities.

Avatar n tn one small tip of asparagus. No other food at all. Now, I am not allergic to asparagus. Infact, I had not even eaten it that night! I had eaten it THREE DAYS BEFORE!!! Everything else I'd eaten since had passed right through... At last! A clue! I must have had a blockage! Maybe my stomach was overproducing acid to break up this lodged piece of food??? Maybe I am prone to blockages? Immediately, all pain and symptoms subsided. I went to sleep, and slept until 2:00pm that afternoon.
Avatar n tn For the last 6 months I have been getting tearing (look like paper cuts) in my vaginal area (1/4 to 1/2 inch long). I get the tears at least once or twice a week and they last from 2-4 days, go away for a few days and then come back. They continue to occur in the same locations; 1. Inside the vaginal lips on the sides almost always in the crease (between the labia minora and majora?) 2. Between the anus and vaginal opening (perineum) 3. Above the clitoris in the "hood" area.

The odd thing is that it doesn't smell like asparagus--more like peanuts. Not everyone gets this asparagus thing by a long shot. I read somewhere that it might be that they do get it, but lack the ability to detect the odor. Back to coffee.

Avatar n tn Kidney stones Causes Gout is caused by having higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your body. Your body may make too much uric acid, or have a hard time getting rid of uric acid. If too much uric acid builds up in the fluid around the joints (synovial fluid), uric acid crystals form. These crystals cause the joint to swell up and become inflamed. Not everyone with high uric acid levels in the blood has gout. The exact cause is unknown. Gout may run in families.
