974371 tn?1424653129 Hi, the most reported common side effect of amitiza is diarrhea. It can also cause abdominal distension, nausea and abdominal pain. It can also cause fecal incontinence. Like your doctor suggested you can continue this medications for a few more days before you give up this medication. Regards.
Avatar n tn My daughter began amitiza and it has worked wonderfully, however, she is spotting in between periods. Is this common?
605458 tn?1539228808 Just curious why the bottle and my GI doc both say to take it with meals. Is it to prevent a side effect, such as nausea, or does it have something to do with how the medication works?
Avatar n tn Having said all of the above there is one difference I noticed with the Amitiza and that is the medication has greatly reduced the syncope episode I was having during a bowl movement which were occurring about once a month. Since I have been prescribed a Amitiza, which was about six months ago, I only had one syncope incident which by itself is a help to me. I hope my brief exegesis helps.
329994 tn?1301663248 Thank you for answering my post. I appreciate that and I am certainly glad that it is working for you. I will keep that in consideration. As I said, I am very nervous to take this pill. I have heart problems so wasn't thrilled with the side effects that I was reading and wanted to hear from others that had taken it. Thank you!
Avatar m tn Also take Lactulose and Amitiza. However, in order to take the Amitiza must take a nausea pill before and after. Often times still have nausea with the Amitiza and not convinced it helps all that much. I've been at this for 8 yrs and have done everything but stand on my head. Without pills and powder - bowel movements are difficult and every 3-5 days. And only partial. EXTREMELY bloated. Have difficulty fitting into street clothes later in the day. Makes work life and social life difficult.
Avatar n tn Had breast reconstruction over 10 years ago - TRAM flap with abdominal muscle. Digestion issues worsen every year. Physician prescribed Amitiza last year but now have to meet new-year deductible before I can benefit from manufacturer coupon. Symptoms now include increased, painful bloating, no burps, no flatulence and no bowel movement after about 5 days drinking only water. Usually fruit or juice will help but nothing is helping or happening. Suggestions welcome and encouraged.
Avatar n tn I did and its been a month and it still hasnt healed. Having trouble with constipation and I am on amitiza. Any advice is welcome. As well, my doctor told me to take a stool softner twice a day to. Thinking about starting to eat soup.
2102085 tn?1350866645 I went to a gastroenterologist the next day and she thought it was IBS and prescribed me Amitiza and Bentyl. I have been on the Amitiza and it makes me have frequent watery BMs...and the Bentyl does not do much. The pain is constant and I feel like I'm pregnant I'm so bloated (I'm not!) could this really just be IBS? Could the pain be reproductive (i.e. ovarian cysts) I'm going to school for nursing and it is really interfering with my education...
1168718 tn?1464983535 Hi Candy, I really don't know how common it is but I also have IBS that just keeps getting worse... I only have bowel movements once maybe twice a month... I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth.. Also, I used to never have bloating and pain in between those movements... But, in the last few months my stomach stays distended, I cramp until I double over, and nothing seems to help... My doctor said it's a combination of the MS and the medication...
1704915 tn?1357601254 I dont want to be a guinea pig and be trying stuff that is not safe. I dont want my condition to become worse because of them where I cant later have surgery etc.
Avatar f tn You can try using other medications for constipation to see if that works better. Amitiza is a new one out there but sometimes certain ones work better than others. Has your doctor ever mentioned abdominal migraines?
Avatar m tn These symptoms may be associated with Fibro or CFS, but you should really find a neurologist that will be able to properly diagnose you. If you have exhausted all of the Dr's in your area, then go somewhere else... don't let their ignorance be your downfall!
946915 tn?1271941032 Thanks and yes...I've had all the tests you mentioned above done. The only ones that showed anything was the CT scan showed a small kidney stone and the gastric emptying scan showed moderate to severe gastroparentsis. I need to work on the multiple smaller meals...I typically try to keep semi-healthy snacks at work and just eat dinner. I do try to eat low-fat...maybe I'm eating fiborous things and don't realize it. We tried amitiza and it did nothing...
Avatar n tn I have these bloated, distention, nausea, constipation (sometimes) for about 20 years. Colonoscopy and gastroenteroscopyn always show clear and fine. I was prescribed Amitiza 8 mg 2 years ago. There was a point that I felt ok for 3 months in a row recently. But unfortunately, it came back again. It really bothers my daily life and work. What should I do?
Avatar f tn Yes, Zelnorm was taken off the market but Amitiza is what I was prescibed in place of that. These are just take for short terms as they have really seem to help me in the past. The test results came back that the pains that I was having at the time before(2006) were consistant with the findings as when this other dr did a colonoscopy, were it showed this and is stated " spasms was noted consistent with irritable bowel syndrone, and internal hemorrhoids were seen.
Avatar m tn Is it a lightening bolt sensation? You may be constipated and pressure is irritating your anterolateral cutaneous nerve (meralgia paresthetica). You could start taking Miralax, a prebiotic, and magnesium citrate to get things moving. If that isn't enough, you might need the rather expensive Rx called Amitiza.
Avatar n tn More water is better, but I take more than one packet to get enough relief. This is on top of a strong oral medication (Amitiza) and magnesium. With Miralax, I get the stuff in the bottle and take 1 1/2 capfuls once a day and as needed.
1704915 tn?1357601254 Some people (like you) get these severe side effects to Amitiza and there is no reason to think this is something else than just a side effect. I am on large amounts of magnesium for hypomagnesemia (4 g of magnesium gluconate through my J tube every day and 6 g of IV magnesium through my tunneled IJ line every day) and this has actually helped my constipation more than anything else.
Avatar n tn I have severe abdominal bloating/distention, rapid weight gain (put 25 pounds on in less than 2 weeks), stingy sensation up and down my lower legs (front) almost burning and my fingers tingle/feel swollen, fatigue (wake up tired, tired after eating, and sleep whenever not at work), waking up tired, muscle soreness, joint pain, nausea, and my stomach is warm to the touch and hurts.
Avatar m tn She experiences regular fatigue, bloating, and constipation and is on Amitiza. the doctor said that fatigue is probably a result of low iron in her blood. Is the lump cancerous? Does she need emergency medical attention? Please any help would be greatly appreciated and i am on the verge of serious depression!!!!
Avatar m tn I do not have a large intestine, had surgery 13 years ago. at the place small colon is connected i had a CT scan which says i have a stricture and scarring. I am having terrible bloating and cannot eat any large meal, also can't do fiber, gluten or carbs. Any suggestions. I take amitiza twice a day and drink miralax every night with prune juice. this has ruined my life. it has just gotten worse over the last 6 months.
