Common Questions and Answers about Interferon ribavirin therapy

285777 tn?1231613444 A short while ago, another doctor also very enthusiasticly recommended Combination Treatment (Interferon and Ribavirin) but after some checking on my own, i freaked out. The side effects are terrible and I've been reading all kinds of horrible articles about permenant brain damage, permenant post treatment side effects that are even worse than hcv symptoms and I'm totally lost.....can anyone tell me a positive experience with interferon treatment.
Avatar n tn My doctor told me the cost of the medication is $2,500 a month.
Avatar n tn I have the kind of HCV positive(chronic) that does not respond so wellto interferon treatments. I have choosen to try this Interferon-Ribavirin therapy regardless with hopes of getting better. I start this therapy soon after the new year.I live in Bend,Oregon and feel I need to attend a support group either for Interferon-Ribavirin therapy users or HCV positive(chronic) patients. Do you know if there are support groups in my area????

1722607 tn?1335751458 Which drug is the interferon? Is that the VIC I keep hearing or the RIBA? I'm so confused. What drugs do what? I thought there were 3 drugs for treatment. One is a shot? What is incivek? Can anyone help explain? I feel like a idiot on this forum.
Avatar f tn Quite sure the same thing happens to people who undergo cancer therapy or any other long term drug therapy.
Avatar m tn Yes, people can and do successfully complete antiviral therapy with the current standard of care which is interferon and ribavirin. The odds of reaching a sustained virological response or cure depends on genotype, degree of liver damage, age, how long you've had the virus just to name a few. Here is a good website containing good basic information regarding hepc and treatment: http://www.janis7hepc.
Avatar f tn My question and concerns pertain to the chronic problems I have encountered since my therapy. I did the year on Interferon and ribavirin, responded then came out of remission with a vengeance. The depression was unbearable, also the flu like symptoms. When I ended the therapy I had acquired fibromyalgia, hoshimoto's thyroiditis, increased viral count, GI problems, and a new personality!... and not a better one, I have never been able to come off anti-depressants since.
Avatar m tn I realize you did triple therapy, while I had Sov/Riba less interferon. Can't speak of the interferon reduced dosage, only the Riba. I do know others will chime in for a heads up answer to that question. Since interferon was out of my equation my WBC didn't suffer to much. Looked back and it semi stayed in the 5.5 range, while the neuts were 2.5. Do believe the Sovaldi is the main ingredient in this mix of drugs.
1547916 tn?1294284211 For a first-time treatment, you should expect 800-1000 mg of ribavirin (dose over 160 lbs/76 kg)/ day and 100 mcg of peglated interferon. The shots come in tiny needled-preloaded syringes that you can administer to yourself once/week. The average USA cost for me was about $1200/month for the meds. You may try contacting Roche as sometimes they can supply discounted or free meds, depending on your situation.
Avatar n tn 3b Please advise me is it pssible to continue Pegasys+ribavirin therapy with my present health condition(Portal hypertension,Esophaegal Verix ii-iii)?
Avatar m tn Induction of interferon-stimulated cytokines correlates with viral kinetics following ribavirin therapy, suggesting that ribavirin promotes interferon signaling. See: Ribavirin potentiates interferon action by augmenting interferon-stimulated gene induction Hepatology. 2011 Jan;53 The combination of pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin is the standard treatment for chronic hepatitis C.
Avatar n tn There seems to have little or no research studies regarding Post Pegylated Interferon and Ribavirin related side effects and so I put this question out to patients who have done this treatment.
1547916 tn?1294284211 here in the States, the cost for 24 weeks pegylated interferon/ribavirin, if purchased by cash out of pocket would cost (roughly) USD $14,000. (AUD $13,675). The interferon requires refrigeration; it is shipped overnight in cold-pack cooler containers.
583625 tn?1221086929 All of the symptoms that are happening right now came into effect during and after the medication of 6 months on the Interferon and Ribavirin of about 4 or 5 years ago. These affects have never gotten better after I stopped taking this medication.
Avatar m tn MY HCV Gentotype is '3a' Can anyone guide me what should I do? If I go for interferon therapy again, Dr says I've to go for therapy for 12 months and only 50% chances are I'll get recovered. And if not, my liver will get worst. I got married about a year ago and trying to have baby. Please someone help me..
Avatar f tn 79% with telaprevir triple therapy and 46% with pegylated interferon/ribavirin among patients who never reduced their ribavirin dose; 75% and 54%, respectively, among those who used 800-1000 mg/day ribavirin; 74% and 42%, respectively, among those who used < 600 mg ribavirin.
Avatar f tn This was shown in a retrospective analysis of a large, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in which patients who achieved RVR had an SVR rate of approximately 90% regardless of whether they received peginterferon alfa and ribavirin, standard interferon and ribavirin, or peginterferon alfa monotherapy. In addition, the likelihood of SVR patients with genotype 1 infection who achieve an RVR does not appear to be affected by shortening the duration or reducing the dose of ribavirin.
5045042 tn?1365893700 Hi sorry to hear about your rash. Not many treating with interferon and ribavirin anymore since the new meds like Harvoni and Viekira Pak and now many others were approved since 2013 2014. Curious where are you located that you were treated with interferon. What advise has your doctor offered? You may be able to find some help in the post hep c treatment community forum http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn I wouldn't call interferon and riba chemo therapy. interferon boosts your immune system and chemo destroys tumors and cells along with a lot of healthy cells in a person's body. From the people I have known who experienced chemo for cancer it is much more devastating to one's body. I suppose if you use the term chemo interchangeably with chemical therapy you could say any medication is chemo.
Avatar m tn 91% of patients receiving 400 mg PSI-7977 + pegylated interferon/ribavirin; Patients receiving pegylated interferon/ribavirin standard therapy are still undergoing follow-up for SVR. The SVR12 rate reached 98% among patients who received at least 8 weeks of 400 mg PSI-7977. All but 1 patient in the 2 PSI-7977 arms qualified for 24 total weeks of treatment according to response-guided therapy.
Avatar n tn What to you think the chance of telling a doctor that you have Zadaxin and have him turn a blind eye while treating you with Interferon/Ribavirin? I would'nt want to take Zadaxin without him being aware of it. I feel like this is my best shot, since Zadaxin is approved in 34 countries and showing very good response for the hard to treat group, that I am in.
Avatar m tn There seems to be a renewed interest in the Tapering off the Interferon and Ribavirin as some are getting closer to the EOT or are in the planing stages as to what to do. Most are aware that being on these meds for so long that the body had become adapted to the higher than normal levels of the interferon in the body and are concerned about when treatment is stopped what will be the lasting effects if any, after stopping abruptly.
173930 tn?1196341998 Patient- and virus-related factors influence the response of patients with chronic hepatitis C to interferon-based therapy. The purpose of this study was to model the probability of achieving a sustained virological response in individual patients, taking into consideration various predictive factors. Material and methods. We combined data from two randomized, multinational trials in which patients received peginterferon alfa-2a (40KD) plus ribavirin.
1125489 tn?1309309471 I am lucky in not having a detectable amount of hep C in my blood after six years, but I have developed, in the past two or three years, atrial fibrillation and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and I'm wondering if this could have been brought on by the pegylated Interferon / Ribavirin therapy because I was under a lot of stress during treatment and felt some of the same symptoms that I have now. Thank you.

26471 tn?1211940121 Although ribavirin (Rib) and interferon (IFN) combination therapy has become a popular modality for treating patients with chronic hepatitis C virus, about 50% of patients usually relapse, particularly those with genotype1b and high viral load. It has been shown that patients in whom viremia was eliminated in the early period after staring IFN therapy showed favorable outcome. Here we investigated possible mechanisms underlying differences in sensitivities to IFN therapy.
