198419 tn?1360242356 I am no expert, but since three of the CRAB drugs are interferon beta (either 1a or 1b), they should all have the similar benefits/risks.
675058 tn?1226445723 Are you facing a decision about choosing a med? Of the four approved for use in MS, three are Interferons (specifically beta-1a) and one, Copaxone is not. They are all about equally effective in RRMS. Do you have concerns about being on an interferon?

The drug, a form of interferon called "interferon beta-1a," is not available in the United States.
1815939 tn?1377991799 The most common events in the 12- and 24-week groups were fatigue (32.7% vs 46.5%), headache (27.9% vs 30.8), and nausea (in 17.8% vs 20.3%). Hemoglobin levels below 10 g/dL were less common in the 12-week than 24-week group (7.2% vs 11.0%), and were managed with a ribavirin dose reduction. Most adverse events were mild to moderate. There were more serious adverse events in the 12-week than the 24-week group (6.2% vs 4.7%), which led to discontinuation in about 2% of each group.
Avatar f tn 0001)[8], with patients nearly twice as likely to remain relapse-free for more than two years compared to those receiving placebo (31% vs. 16%, p=0.007)[8]. In addition, treatment with interferon beta-1b may slow disease progression[9]. After two years, almost three-quarters of patients who experienced a single episode of neurological disease lasting 24 hours or more did not progress to clinically definite MS[10].
Avatar f tn m not an expert, but i do (hopefully did) have 1b...my dr said that 1a needs one mutation to replicate while 1b needs 2 mutations to replicate making 1a more difficult to treat.
Avatar n tn As i said I have genotype 1b. I still dont really understand what 1a and 1b really means. Is 1b harder to be treated than 1a or viseversa. Im also willing to do any trails take one for the team.
Avatar f tn Also, the type of interferon used is different than that in Betaseron. Betaseron is interferon beta-1b NOT interferon beta 2-b. These little points are important. Also, in discussing male sperm counts and motility one must consider many, many factors - not just the most notable med the person is on. A man's sperm count and activity may be affected by things we don't even think about like temperature, alcohol, depression, meds like anti-depressants or antihypertensives.
1347833 tn?1276708297 I am a guy from Finland and I start my interferon + riba day after tomorrow. My genotype is 1b. I am nervous about side effects. I hope that they are not hard for me. Have a good summer everybody!
1815939 tn?1377991799 Methods We randomly assigned 419 patients with HCV genotype 1b infection (PEARL-III study) and 305 patients with genotype 1a infection (PEARL-IV study) to 12 weeks of ABT-450/r–ombitasvir (at a once-daily dose of 150 mg of ABT-450, 100 mg of ritonavir, and 25 mg of ombitasvir), dasabuvir (250 mg twice daily), and ribavirin administered according to body weight or to matching placebo for ribavirin.
Avatar f tn for prior null responders - 27% SVR for 1a vs 37% for 1b; for partial prior responders - 47% for 1a vs 68% for 1b; for relapsers no real difference - 84% for 1a vs 88% for 1b. - cirrhotics did not do as well if they were prior partial responders or null responders but did the same if they were prior relapsers. Partial prior responders: 72% SVR if no or minimal fibrosis; 56% SVR with bridging cirrhosis; 34% if cirrhotic.

Avatar f tn Corticosteroid therapy helps to relieve the pain, enhance visual recovery and decrease the risk of developing MS over two years in patients whose MRI shows two or more plaques. Immunomodulating agents such as interferon beta-1a and beta-1b can be help patients with two or more plaques. Dr. Feldman Sandy T. Feldman, M.D., M.S.
Avatar n tn I have been treating my multiple sclerosis (MS) with avonnex (interferon beta-1a) for the past ten years. I have had four severe flare ups, three in the first four years and one in the last six months. which I needed physical therapy to walk again. In 2003 I was diagnosed with Hep C, it has recent progressed to stage 3 fibrosis. I have a reason to believe that my MS treatment is damaging my liver and causing my fibrosis to advance.
147426 tn?1317265632 In this post-hoc study, MRI scans were analyzed from patients with relapsing MS participating in a placebo-controlled trial of interferon beta-1a. The brain parenchymal fraction, defined as the ratio of brain parenchymal volume to the total volume within the brain surface contour, was used to measure whole brain atrophy. The relationship between disease features and brain atrophy and effect of interferon beta-1a were determined.
