The pen does allow drawing air to insure the Lantis is not injected into a vessel. It should NEVER be used without this precaution. i.e. A PEN IS UNSAFE WITH THIS INSULIN!
B.T.W. I no longer trust or take Lantis, as it relies on forming crystals under the skin to prevent immediate release of the entire dose, and I consider it dangerous for regular use.
I would continue to use insulin glargine, a recombinent insulin analogue (Lantus) without concern. This was the recommendation in the British Journal Lancet Vol 1, 374 issue 9649 p511-513 15 August 2009. The media has produced some fear based upon five studies that I have read, and used some statistical manipulation that would have failed me in "statistics one" in the eighth grade. The experimental protocols were pretty crummy.
Examples are insulin zinc suspension, protamine zinc insulin, and the insulin analogues insulin glargine and insulin detemir. The latter two insulins are now the most widely used long-acting insulins.
* Biphasic insulins: mixtures of short-acting and intermediate-acting insulins in different proportions, such as 30/70, 50/50. Examples are NovoMix 30, Humulin M3, Insuman comb and Humalog Mix25.

Pizza can be tough to estimate, more because the carb content can vary so much from slice to slice and pizza to pizza. But although I'm just a mom like you, and not a doctor, it sounds like it's not just pizza causing high blood sugar.
You didn't say what sort of long-lasting insulin she's on-- is it Novalin? Or Lantus/glargine? If you haven't tried Lantus (aka glargine) yet, I would strongly recommend talking to your endo about it.
She complained of polidypsia, dry mouth, weight loss. Insulinotherapy was initiated with glargine, ten units at bedtime (glycemic value before aministration was 169) after reiceiving 6 units of aspart imediately (7 pm). Next day a fasting value of 140 mg/dl. Bedtime value (2 hours postprandial ) 269. After 10 U glargine, fasting value 120 mg/dl. Glycemic variation are very important and depend on the thyroid status.
What is your opnion?
I am curious as why you do not mention that Glargine(lantus) does NOT have a license for twice daily usage ,levemir has a licensce for OD and BD and has weight benefits for type 2 patients???? or are you heavily sponsored/involved with the manufactureres of glargine? I am interested.
The doctor thinks it is too high and gave Recombinant Insulin Glargine Injection and my mother does 15 unit injection every night. But blood sugar is still like 7.3~8.3 mmol/L before meal and 9-10 mmol/L after meal.
Is this often to see among diabetes type 2 patients?
Can some one give me any advice about how to improve my mother's condition?

I have a NovoLog FlexPen with 100 units which stopped working after about 1/3 of the insulin had been dispensed. It simply stopped releasing the insulin left in the pen. I pay a lot for these pens since my insurance only covers about half the cost. I took it to my pharmacy who said I must get it from Novo Nordisk, Inc. How can I get a replacement?
Depends on how you use your insullin. My doctor gave me an insulin to carbohydrate ratio to use. I use 1 unit of insulin to every 12 grams of carbs I eat. The less carbs I eat, the less insulin I use. I have a very physical job for four hours a day and I don't even need my Humalog when I eat lunch. My pen generally lasts me the whole month. My Humalog is only good for 28 - 30 days.
Usually there are very tiny bubbles holding onto the wall of the insulin pen. If they are at top of the pen I do not worry. But some times they are at the bottom and no matter how much i tap the pen, these tiny bubbles wont budge from their place.
Is there way to avoid the formation of these tiny bubbles?
I was told by my diabetes health staff that the way to verify that the insulin has injected properly is to look for a small drop of insulin on the tip of the needle after injecting. Now that I've done some research online, I see that many people recommend injecting a few units into the air first to make sure all is working fine before actually performing the real injection on myself. So, I'll definitely begin doing that as it seems like the best solution.
I am having issues with the Novolog pen too...the disc in the pen that acts as a lever pushing insulin out slips. I have had this in more than four pens now. Sometimes, the pen does not dispense at all, seems to function fine till I have to flush out 6-10 units of insulin at a time to make it work again. I have had severe highs with this - when I thought I injected myself with insulin and the pen did not function like it should.
I am diabetic using an insulin pen (not a syringe). A few hours after I started the treatment, I gave myself an insulin injection. I was traveling and didn't have a new needle, so I used the one I used before and left on the pen. It was more than 4 hours that i used this old needle on my insulin pen. Sorry, that was stupid. Say I was actually infected, would that mean I am having a 2nd exposure by my own possible infected blood, thus ruining my PEP?
Montefiori Medical Center (Bronx, New York) performed an in-depth study of 240 women receiveing Lantus (insulin glargine) during pregnancy. The results were published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, April, 2009 (4) 208-10. They found the drug to be well-tolerated and advised continuing the use of Lantus during pregnancy. PubMed has no studies whatsoever that substantiate an adverse affect on pregnancy.
The reading is absolutely positively meaningless.
You may or may not have an insulin utilization syndrome.
A glucose reading has to be in context. Precisely what did you eat, how long ago did you eat it, and you need a number of readings.
The only way to tell for sure where you are in terms of diabetes at is to go to a reputable physician and undergo either a glucose fasting test or undergo an insulin clamp protocol.
