Imiquimod for molluscum

Common Questions and Answers about Imiquimod for molluscum

Avatar f tn Recently (5/28) diagnosed with molluscum contagiosum and besides from cryotherapy for treatment i also received Aldara cream 5%. (the derm did not get every lump/wart with the liquid nitrogen) Questions I have about this is; How effective is it to be used? Should I apply it with a finger or would a Q-Tip be better or should it be something else? How exactly does it work?
Avatar m tn Hello, These bumps sound like molluscum only as sores of herpes are very painful. In adults, molluscum infections are often sexually transmitted and can transmit from one site to other skin sites by aoutoinocultaion. Treatment includes physical destruction or manual extrusion of the lesions, cryotherapy, and curettage. Please use these treatment options under a dermatologist’s guidance only.
Avatar m tn Hello everyone, I need help and I hope someone can help me out. I have molluscum on my genital, currently I'm getting them treated by the Dermatologist but I would like to know if some one know how to treat/cure them faster? Thank you so much in advance!
Avatar m tn However, resolution can be speeded up by treatment, usually by a dermatologist just scraping away the lesions (less painful than it sounds) or freezing them. Imiquimod (Aldara), used for genital warts, also appears to be effective but it is slow.
Avatar m tn He prescribed valtrex and everything healed up. I've since had 2 blood tests and both have come back negative for HSV1 and HSV2. I read that Imiquimod may cause symptoms similar to herpes or secondarily reactivate the herpes zoster virus. Should I keep getting blood tests or is there some other way to be certain of what I may or may not have?
Avatar n tn Hello, I have been diagnosed with molluscum and am going in for treatment this week. I have a large amount of very small bumps, roughly the size of the head of a ballpoint pen. I believe that I contracted it from a girl I have been seeing recently, but she does not have any clear signs of it. Otherwise, I am not aware how I could have contracted it. Oh well, I am receiving treatment this week and the Doctor has recommended electrocautery.
Avatar n tn But if your doct thinks the lesions were likely herpes, you should be tested for herpes simplex virus (HSV) by culture of the ulcers, if they are still fresh, and/or by blood testing for HSV-2 antibody. To date the research in imiquimod for MC is almost entirely limited to children.
Avatar n tn you might have had both problems, MC for the pimple-like lesions and tinea (ringworm, i.e. jock itch) for the rash. But the persisting bumps of your penis don't sound like either one. You can either go to a dermatologist or return to your own doc; your choice.
Avatar m tn No research has directly compared the various treatment methods for molluscum contagiosum. If there are only a few lesions, I personally favor physical removal -- currettage (scraping by a trained professional) pricking the top and expressing the core. (Brisk bleeding afterward is evidence the entire core has been expressed and that healing can be expected.) With larger numbers, freezing with liquid nitrogen is my second choice, and is often used in my STD clinic.
Avatar n tn I went to the Doctor and was tested for everything(came back Negative) and they said it was Molluscum Contagiosum. They said I could have gotten it from anything from dirty towels to contact with another person. I have recently noticed that I have many of the same bumps in my pubic hair area as well that I didn't notice before. Assuming this started in October, I am guessing I have atleast another 6 months to get through it.
Avatar f tn 1. The partner who I suspected transmitted it never had any bumps on his genitals, which tells me you can get it w/o the bumps. So, just how easily spread is it? How contagious is the virus when there are no bumps vs. when there are bumps? 2. I'm sure I've touched my genitals and then touched my face/other areas of my body before I knew I had this i.e. before I had any bumps, should I expect these bumps to show up elsewhere on my body? 3.
Avatar m tn with molluscum contagiosum which is the best way to have them removed for the fastest results and the least painful and if there is a healing process how long does it take?
Avatar m tn took a look at the small bumps I have and I was told it was Molluscum Contagiosum and was prescribed Imiquimod. The other woman I have seen has not shown any symptoms of anything that I am aware of or at least she has not told me anything. I am just a little intrigued and curious to know if there is any link between the two viruses and should I be concerned about any other STD.
Avatar n tn But since there is doubt and you have apparently been sexually exposed to herpes, you might want to have a blood test for HSV-2 infection; then you'll know for sure. See numerous other messages on this forum about the proper HSV blood tests. 4) MC is a benign (if frustrating) condition; because it isn't at all serious, almost no research has been done. We just can't say how infectious it is. However, it's not a super-common STD, so my guess is that it isn't very efficiently transmitted.
Avatar f tn I smoke marijuana daily and my girlfriend was prescribed imiquimod cream for molluscum contagiousum which I appear to have as well, I've done three treatments so far (three times a week) and I'm curious to the effects marijuana smoking may have on treating the molluscum. I know that imiquimod works by provoking an immune response in treated regions, and that marijuana does effect immune health. Is there any advice? Should I stop smoking during treatment?
1295255 tn?1273121552 I have had these bumps for about 5 months now, I have been to a doctor that said it can be warts or molluscum and she referred me to a Dermatologist that is why I post the picture in this group or forum. I have no health insurance so I decide not to go. From this picture can anybody tell me what this is? Thanks for all help, It's greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn 3) Other treatments are available. Ask your dermatologist about a prescription for imiquimod (trade name Aldara). Or ask himn to show you how to treat new lesions yourself, by pricking the top with a sterile needle then pressing out the white core just as you would with a pimple. (We often teach this to patients this in my STD clinic.) Wash your hands and the genital area after treating lesions in this way, to avoid spreading the virus around.
Avatar n tn com/ for more information. SilverCure is available for those with molluscum. What frustrated me to no end is that the molluscum always seemed to heal to a great degree and not be as pronouced so my family doctor, STD clinic doctor AND my derm all told me not to worry and let it clear up on its own. But it has recurred. But now that i've seen more pictures of molluscum and read more posts, i'm fairly certain that's what I have.
Avatar m tn What is the best way to treat molluscum contagiosum over the counter or are their any kind of ointments to get rid of it.
Avatar f tn I have been screened for STDs in January and I was negative for everything. I will head back to my doctor to have them further examined. But my main concern is if my doctor misdiagnosed these bumps. Is it possible? Are warts and molluscum easily mixed up?
Avatar m tn I hadn't had sex for 8 or 9 months when the warts and molluscum appeared, so I know I've been infected with these each of these viruses for at least a year. I was wondering what you recommend the next step for treatment for me should be. Do I have more aggressive strains of these viruses that makes them come back? Or is my body more susceptible to them? Is there solid evidence suggesting that lifestyle has a significant effect on my body's ability to fight off these viruses?
Avatar n tn 1) Do you think Molluscum Contagiosum can cause me to have bad chronic fatigue for 3.5 weeks straight? If this normal? When should it go away, 4-5 weeks? 2) Do you think Molluscum Contagiosum can cause the several bouts of fever? I’m scared it is something worse than Molluscum Contagiosum but don’t know. I also notice my partner is starting to get flu symptoms and I’m scared I have passed it to them. Thanks for your input!
Avatar m tn I got married and did unprotected sex with my wife for quite a while. I was molluscum free till now when I found out that two new bumps have developed. I went to the derm and he pricked them off with a needle, but told that the regular white core was not found in them. They could be molluscum or something else. My questions please - Could i have transmitted the virus to my wife in the absence of the bumps ? Its been three months already I have been struggling with the bumps.
Avatar n tn The limits are there to be fair to all who use the site and to keep individuals from dominating it. On to your questions, briefly. The utility of imiquimod (Aldara) for molluscum is marginal. Instead of wasting time, I would suggest you just bite the bullet and get them frozen. All need to be frozen in order to cure you and then to reduce the likelihood of you infecting your GF, your concerns about oral sex, etc. Just go on and get it done.
Avatar n tn Pediatr Dermatol 2006) indicate that curretage can be more effective in treating recalcitrant molluscum in adults than cryotherapy, cantharadin or imiquimod. I can't seem to find a dermatologist in my hometown of Seattle willing to do curretage, however. They all want to spray with liquid nitrogen, which is proving to be less effective. Is a dermatologist even the right person for this? Would someone with an infectious desease specialization be more appropriate?
Avatar n tn Im not sure if I have molluscum or what but if I can get rid of it by myself I will try. It has been nearly 4 years.
Avatar n tn How safe is Aldara? My 22 month old has molluscum right under her left eye. Dr. ordered Aldara.
Avatar n tn It may take from 6 months up to 5 years for all of the molluscum to go away Diagnosis is usually through pjysical examination of the lesions. It is best that you have him evaluated by a specialist or a dermatologist for proper diagnosis. Medical treatments include: minor surgery, curettage or laser ablation, cryotherapy or Imiquimod cream. If dermatitis is present, this may be treated with hydrocortisone cream. Take care and regards.
