glucosamine

1110049 tn?1409402144 Glucosamine is commonly taken in combination with chondroitin, a glycosaminoglycan derived from articular cartilage. Use of complementary therapies, including glucosamine, is common in patients with osteoarthritis, and may allow for reduced doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.
Avatar n tn s natural glucosamine is used to make and repair joint cartilage, taking glucosamine as a nutritional supplement is thought to help repair damaged cartilage by augmenting the body's supply of glucosamine. This has helped my husbands knee pain and may help you also. Make sure and check with your doctor first though. It is not a prescription drug but it may interfere with other medications so it is best to ask your doctor if you can take it safely.
Avatar m tn My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight. So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose. As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement. You could mention this to your vet perhaps.
660872 tn?1238641245 Hi, has anyone tried sharks cartilage or green lip mussels for arthritis in dogs. I recently bought some of each but have only been giving the cartilage. It's too soon to tell if it's going to work. They are both very expensive and I don't want to waste my money if other people have found they don't work.
694961 tn?1228732588 vitamin c in large doses (buffered kind), msm, hyaluronic acid, and the combo of magnesium and B-1 (thiamin) can help relax muscles in the back, a little known but often effective avenue to try. i had one major success with that in someone with DDD. green-lipped mussel and all that shark cartilage is often the raw materials for glucosamine and is nothing special in my own opinion, but if it works use it.
Avatar m tn Grade I, softening of the cartilage; Grade II, fissures; Grade III, partial thickness loss of cartilage; Grade IV, exposure of subchondral bone. The problem with hyaline cartilage, which is what covers the bones inside of joints, is that it cannot regenerate itself. It has limited repair capabilities. If it does repair a small portion of the articular cartilage, it is with fibrocartilage. Fibrocartilage is sort of a scar for cartilage.
Avatar m tn glucosamine, with vitamin c as the two work best together, and hyaluronic acid. some do get better results from chondroitin but it is not necessary, or shark cartilage. fish/flax oil will lube 'em up for you also. froobar, C.N.
Avatar f tn Is there some supplement or something I can take to rebuild the cartilage? Or - what should I be doing to stop the loss of cartilage that I have already suffered? And - is this hereditary? Thank you in advance for your comment.
Avatar m tn On the down side, many companies have begun selling hyaluronic acid (as well as chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine) as a vastly overpriced, nutritional supplement that is supposed to have curative properties against arthritis, cancer, and other ailments. The idea is that the supplements will help your body replace worn out cartilage.
Avatar f tn I have a pain in knees I am taking natural made triple flex glucosamine 1500 mg chondroitin 800mg and msn 750 mg. no other problem I go for check up regularly no any other problem every thing is good only pain in Knees also MRI done no problem found pain in knees and muscle pain in legs it's really hard to bend over.
1331115 tn?1536362140 I would like to share some info I have found on the benefits of taking Krill Oil for a natuaral pain reliever. It also has many other health benefits as well. I have been taking it for a couple of weeks now and have found that it actually works similar to NSAIDS without the bad side effects.
Avatar n tn Hello and welcome to Med Help. There are many reasons why the body has it's aches and pains. Standing and bending all day can be stressful on the knee and ankle and maybe they are telling you that they are tired and need rest. There are many good herbs and vitamin suppliments on the market today designed to help in the management of muscles and joints. One that is good for joints is called Glucosamine.
Avatar n tn If arthritis is part of the problem, the glucosamine and chondroitin will help to rebuild the cartilage that wears away because of the arthritis and will make her more comfortable. Please keep us posted as to what the vet says.
Avatar n tn ive been giving my dog which is 17kg 1000mg of glucosamine every day for a week which i will now reduce to 500mg a day is there any thing else i should give him with this or is glucosamine alone ok my dog has early signs of arthritis in his back legs its a bit of an effort for him to get up now he is 10 yrs 3mths old and had cruciate ligament surgery back in may last yr and in the other leg about 5 to 6 yrs ago
Avatar n tn Glucosamine isn't actually a pain medication - it's a "cartilage protector." It's great that you have your dog on this, but it won't actually help with the pain. It's used to chronically long term help with reducing osteoarthritis and protecting cartilage. Instead, I'd talk to your vet about getting your dog on a veterinary prescribed NSAID (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory). You SHOULD not give him anything OTC - these can be very toxic to your dog.
Avatar m tn Would a like to try Glucosamine & Chondroitin for my mild hip arthritis. Anyone have good results? Dr prescribed Meloxicam 15mg but am hesitant to start taking it.
Avatar m tn Hello ScalpMassager, Glucosamine and chondroitin are part of normal cartilage. Cartilage acts as a cushion between the bones in a joint. When these supplements first became available they were even suggested by physicians. Many people take glucosamine and chondroitin, alone or together, for osteoarthritis. Some people believe this helps - and I am delighted you are one of them.
Avatar n tn Maybe something is genetically wrong with me. When I was 33 I got my first bursitis (right shoulder). The chiropractor said the bursa are like gelatin ball-bearings in the shoulder, and when one pops, the surrounding muscles become inflamed. Now 10 years later, I have it in both shoulders, and pain when I walk, in my left arch and right ankle. Once my ring finger knuckle hurt for a year. The doc said the X-Ray showed no knuckle between the finger bones.
Avatar f tn Benefits Hips and Knees, Di Gu Pi, Loranthus Combination and more. Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatories, such as Rimadyl, or Previcox or equivalent, and Tramadol are helpful in conjunction with holistic therapies.
Avatar n tn knee and I believe that is why I have had the problems now with that knee, (deterioration of the cartilage). I had surgery on the knee and am hesitant to use injections that over a long time may cause damage (like what happened, I believe due to the cortisone injections) Are there any long term studies related to the synvisc injections and possible long term damage to the knee?
Avatar n tn I know how bad it can be. I had a joint replacement in my left thumb but the implant failed and wound up having 9 surgeries, countless meds, procedures, etc. I don't know if you've tried glucosamine chondroiton. It can help rebuild cartilage if you haven't gone too far. It was too late for my hands but it may be helping other spots I have. What kind of doctor are you seeing? I get some relief from a prescription gel called Voltaren.
Avatar f tn In osteoarthritis there are degenerative changes and damage to the articular cartilage. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is confirmed by physical examination and X-rays of the ankle joint. Medications like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are being used as they are effective in reducing the pain of OA in all joints. Physical therapy plays an important role in the treatment plan of osteoarthritis. If you are not satisfied seeking second opinion will help. Do keep me posted. Take care and regards!
Avatar m tn Now, as for the knee I would assume they are taking the bone and cartilage from an area that can regenerate because cartilage does not heal itself due to poor vascular supply. However, there is one area of cartilage in the knee that is more likely to repair itself. You will probably have to go through physical therapy for both the knee AND the elbow which is one of the reasons they think it will take so long.
Avatar m tn A year ago I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis on my left hip during an arthroscopy and most of the joint cartilage is worn out. Take glucosamine tablets regularly. Even though my condition is not so advanced to take painkillers etc, I cannot do any sport, which is important to me (even at a light, amateur level) and walking start bothering me after a few hundered meters. I have tried the hyaluronic acid (durolane) injection but didn't have any visible result.
Avatar m tn In my observation, some swear by it, others see no different at all. You can buy it almost anywhere supplements are sold. Glucosamine alone is cheaper than the glucosamine-chondroitin combination, so you might start with the single supplement and see how it does. Keep in mind that you often have to take a supplement several weeks or months before it starts to work. I think cycling is a great idea. As with any exercise, start slow/light and build from there.
