Gleevec for bladder cancer

Common Questions and Answers about Gleevec for bladder cancer

gleevec

Avatar n tn Hi, I don't really know the answer but if you are getting reduced white-blood-cell counts, then I'd especially want to avoid any food with possible bacteria. Maybe Mocha can say more. Also, since a few patients get heart damage, I'd look into possibly using melatonin and Co-Q10 (OTC supplements) to try and prevent that. I'm not a big fan of alternative treatments for cancer, but I think that a few things do have value.
Avatar f tn 00779/full The last thing anybody would want is to stop the Gleevec, which is a wonder drug of anti-cancer treatment. So we must think of "managing" the hyponatremia problem. I haven't found anything about long term use of Gleevec. But what springs to mind is that she might have started some other drug recently, which is turning mild hyponatremia to severe hyponatremia. Even ibuprofen. Has she?
Avatar f tn http://www.medhelp.org/cancer/articles/New-Treatments-for-Chronic-Myelogenous-Leukemia/3 Another helpful site is Cancer.Net, from the American Society of Clinical Oncology: http://www.cancer.net (just enter CML into the search area). Thank you for your question.
Avatar f tn Hi there. It is important to be empathic, and let your brother know that you are always there for him. However, you should not overdo this, since this might lower your brother's self esteem further and cause him to have self-pity. CML is a manageable disease given the appropriate medications. Not all CML's are candidate for Gleevec. Only those who tested positive for the philadelphia chromosome or the bcr-abl gene would be candidates to receive gleevec.

Praying for strength, for cancer to be reduced and abolished through a higher power with the help from Becky her family and friends and most importantly to find the right drug(s) and Oncologists to be on board. Thank you heavenly father for Becky and her caretakers. Thank you for each day and all the smiles and laughter we can get.
Avatar m tn Hi, I don't know the answer -- but since both CML and Gleevec toxicity produce anemia because of marrow suppression, maybe it's not possible to tell the difference. E.g., both would show a low reticulocyte count. This full text paper on anemia from Gleevec https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ajh.23879 shows that other signs such as red blood cell size can vary, so that doesn't seem to help. Sorry.
Avatar n tn Is it possible that after taking gleevec for only two weeks WBC droped from 36.7 to 7? All other blood counts are also came back to normal range. Could doctor make mistake in diagnosis of CML? Maybe I should get seg second opinion?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CML and given Gleevec 400 ml. After taking gleevec for 2 weeks doctor took additional blood test. My WBC dropped from 36.5 to 7.1 and all other blood counts came down to normal range. I'm wondering if gleevec could give such fast hematological response or I was possibly misdiagnosed originally. I don't and didn't have any symptoms, my spleen and liver weren't enlarged, no enlarged lymph. Should I get second opinion asap? Please, help me.
Avatar n tn Hi. Response to imatinib (gleevec) can be dramatic just like what you experienced. Myelosuppression with neutropenia (decrease in neutrophils) and thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelet count) can be a side effect of treatment. Usually, discontinuation of drug intake is advised until the blood counts increase. You should have your white blood cell count repeated after 1-2 weeks and see if it already improves. You should report to your doctor if you experience any symptoms like fever.
Avatar n tn Am on Gleevec 400mg, now having problems with blisters on the palm. What can I do about it?
Avatar m tn I have CML and was treated with Gleevec for 4 years and achieved remission. I have for the past several months been experiencing sudden onset of weakness which last for hours, to days. My blood pressure which has remained under control for several years with atenolol has been running 145/105 and higher for the past three to four months. I have a feeling of fullness in my stomach, and I have sporatic episodes of mild coughing, this occurs maybe once a week.
Avatar n tn You might find he starts to be able to tolerate the pill. Gleevec is first choice for treating CML, and if he is doing good in every other way then encourage him that he is doing great. I hope this helps you. I would be glad to help you with any other questions.
Avatar f tn I am not a doctor but have undergone treatment for bladder cancer. Standard procedure among urologists for early stage bladder cancer is inserting BCG into the bladder once a week for six weeks and/or mitomycin treatment after tumor removal. There is no shortage of either of those drugs. Ask your doctor about them.
Avatar m tn As far as treatment for your bladder cancer, a repeat cystoscopy within 3 months is appropriate. You have a superficial kind of bladder tumor that has not invaded into the muscle of the bladder. The treatment for this is the surgery that you had. The recurrence rates are high, so close surveillance with cystoscopy is important. Beyond the bladder, you should get imaging of your kidneys to make sure there is no abnormality there as the field of the kidney, bladder, and urethra is the same.
974371 tn?1424653129 Management of bladder cancer usually depends on the type and stage present. For muscle invasive bladder cancer, this requires surgical removal of the bladder. For certain patients, unfit or unwilling to undergo surgery, a combination of extensive TURBT, chemotherapy, and radiation may be done.
Avatar f tn I suffer from ulcerative colitis and now diagnosed with superficial bladder cancer (Ta, low grade). My bladder was perforated during tumor removal (TURBT) resulting in colitis flare up and bowels shutting down after exposure to leakage. Now offered biological therapy (BCG) treatment and worried that the expected stimulated immune response will trigger another colitis "attack". Thank you.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with early stage bladder cancer. As a result of research, I have heard quite a bit about different alternative and integrative treatments for cancer. Is there anything known or researched in the scientific/medical communities about herbal remedies, such as Essiac teas and capsules, or other treatments? What are the side effects of mitomycin(not sure if correct spelling) as this has been recommended to me and is to be infused directly into the bladder for six treatments.
Avatar m tn I have had surgerys, radiation, chemo for bladder cancer.spanning 2000 - 2005. Apparently this test indicates that I am at high risk for recurrence of bladder cancer. Is there a time span in which one would expect a recurrence? Are there any alternative natural products that may help prevent a recurrence or treat bladder cancer?
Avatar n tn Hi, Intestinal metaplasia has been suggested to have a role in the development of bladder cancer. However, it seems that it is merely found along with cancer (bystander not a participant) and along benign growths. Its role as a primary, premalignant lesion is in doubt, hence there is no specific therapy or surveillance for such a finding currently recommended.
Avatar m tn I am a 62yo woman that has received a neobladder in 2006 after being diagnosed with bladder cancer. Currently I am using 480 catheters a month because I am unable to hold urine for longer than 2 hours when sitting and anywhere from 20mins to an hour when standing/walking. I am having to pay for 280 catheters a month since medicare will not cover more than 200. What can replace catheterization? Are there any medical miracles in this field that I could follow up on? Any suggestions are welcomed.
Avatar f tn i was diagnosed with cml in march of 2009 and was also taking 150mg of elavil at bedtime to control migraines for like 10 years. then this past dec. a heart test showed i had prolonged qt of the heart so i was stopped 'cold turkey' by a dr and its been down hill ever since. i have had the shakes, loss of appetite and constant nausea. i wake up evey morning shaky really bad.
Avatar f tn One other suggestion: check out the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network. There are lots of others like us who can give you better advice and info.
1494915 tn?1288919486 There can be a number of causes of this condition, including neurological problems, bladder infections (one of the most common causes), medications, cancer, etc. You should be checked for any of these by your physician.
862849 tn?1239150571 im seeing urology on 12th may, having fasting blood tests done at my gp on wednesday and im currently on tramadol and amytryptaline for pain which seems to be helping,my gp says i have lesions on my bladder and that there is no cure as removing them only means they will grow back....................??both myself and my husband are worried that i have cancer as i know only 2% of bladder lesions are benign, the rest malignant................
Avatar m tn In 2007, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, via a FISH urine test. A biopsy of the bladder tissue was done in a bid to confirm or refute the diagnosis. The result of the biopsy was negative; however, every time the FISH urine test was repeated, it showed cancer cells associated with the bladder. I asked for treatment, but was told that BECAUSE the location of the cancer was not established, treatment could not be offered. Instead, I submitted to a cystoscopy every six months.
