Gleevec for colon cancer

Common Questions and Answers about Gleevec for colon cancer

gleevec

Avatar n tn Hi, I don't really know the answer but if you are getting reduced white-blood-cell counts, then I'd especially want to avoid any food with possible bacteria. Maybe Mocha can say more. Also, since a few patients get heart damage, I'd look into possibly using melatonin and Co-Q10 (OTC supplements) to try and prevent that. I'm not a big fan of alternative treatments for cancer, but I think that a few things do have value.
Avatar f tn 00779/full The last thing anybody would want is to stop the Gleevec, which is a wonder drug of anti-cancer treatment. So we must think of "managing" the hyponatremia problem. I haven't found anything about long term use of Gleevec. But what springs to mind is that she might have started some other drug recently, which is turning mild hyponatremia to severe hyponatremia. Even ibuprofen. Has she?
Avatar f tn http://www.medhelp.org/cancer/articles/New-Treatments-for-Chronic-Myelogenous-Leukemia/3 Another helpful site is Cancer.Net, from the American Society of Clinical Oncology: http://www.cancer.net (just enter CML into the search area). Thank you for your question.
Avatar f tn Hi there. It is important to be empathic, and let your brother know that you are always there for him. However, you should not overdo this, since this might lower your brother's self esteem further and cause him to have self-pity. CML is a manageable disease given the appropriate medications. Not all CML's are candidate for Gleevec. Only those who tested positive for the philadelphia chromosome or the bcr-abl gene would be candidates to receive gleevec.
Avatar m tn Hi, I don't know the answer -- but since both CML and Gleevec toxicity produce anemia because of marrow suppression, maybe it's not possible to tell the difference. E.g., both would show a low reticulocyte count. This full text paper on anemia from Gleevec https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ajh.23879 shows that other signs such as red blood cell size can vary, so that doesn't seem to help. Sorry.
Avatar n tn Is it possible that after taking gleevec for only two weeks WBC droped from 36.7 to 7? All other blood counts are also came back to normal range. Could doctor make mistake in diagnosis of CML? Maybe I should get seg second opinion?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CML and given Gleevec 400 ml. After taking gleevec for 2 weeks doctor took additional blood test. My WBC dropped from 36.5 to 7.1 and all other blood counts came down to normal range. I'm wondering if gleevec could give such fast hematological response or I was possibly misdiagnosed originally. I don't and didn't have any symptoms, my spleen and liver weren't enlarged, no enlarged lymph. Should I get second opinion asap? Please, help me.
Avatar n tn Hi. Response to imatinib (gleevec) can be dramatic just like what you experienced. Myelosuppression with neutropenia (decrease in neutrophils) and thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelet count) can be a side effect of treatment. Usually, discontinuation of drug intake is advised until the blood counts increase. You should have your white blood cell count repeated after 1-2 weeks and see if it already improves. You should report to your doctor if you experience any symptoms like fever.
Avatar n tn I will see my gastroenterologist about this, but he's now on vacation. I'm 29, male, non-smoker, and have no family cancer history. Nearly a year ago, I noticed a small amount of bright red blood on (not in) my stool one time when I went to the bathroom. This has never recurred, but a few times I've found small amounts of bright red on the toilet paper. This has been very infrequent, the amounts have been small and it's generally been after repeated/deep wiping.
Avatar n tn Am on Gleevec 400mg, now having problems with blisters on the palm. What can I do about it?

Avatar f tn does coughing and wheezing more {as asmatic anyway} have any bearings on colon cancer
Avatar f tn colon and prescribe if warranted. Those who are chronically constipated can have increased risk for colon cancer & you should get a screening for this. They may want to do testing also to check about your intestinal motility activity.
Avatar m tn 1. For people with a first degree relative (parent, sibling, child) with colon cancer > 60 yrs, or two second degree relatives with colon cancer, screening as for average risk population (see 5 methods above) but beginning at age 40. 2.
Avatar m tn I have CML and was treated with Gleevec for 4 years and achieved remission. I have for the past several months been experiencing sudden onset of weakness which last for hours, to days. My blood pressure which has remained under control for several years with atenolol has been running 145/105 and higher for the past three to four months. I have a feeling of fullness in my stomach, and I have sporatic episodes of mild coughing, this occurs maybe once a week.
Avatar f tn as of 1998 i am cancer free, however i was told that relying on colonoscopies was not a garantee to stay this way, she said for all she knew i could have cancer now, worried because i have been sick and my iron is low, im bruising easily , in chronic pain in bowels, and think there might be a blockage somewhere.
Avatar f tn t think it is hereditary because they got their colon cancer at the age wherein a person is at risk of colon cancer. If you have this cases in your family, it is a nice move to have a test for colon cancer at your early age. http://colonnews.
Avatar m tn If you have the mutated gene, you will get the cancer!!! Plus, it's not just colon cancer, it is brain, and pancreatic cancer as well. Locating the gene is to protect your children and if they have it, it must be taken very seriosuly! I've lost so many to FAP, do not take this lightly!! vineyardK......get regular colonoscopies, if they don't find any polyps at your age you can wait five years between scopes.
Avatar m tn Colon cancer has a propensity for recurring in the liver, and even though your cancer was first diagnosed eight years ago, colon cancer has been known to come back as late as 10 years from initial discovery. So there is still a possibility that the lesion could be cancer, but we can't know for sure until a biopsy is done. By the way, has a CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) test been done? If so, what are the results?
1280322 tn?1302780827 Ever since i have stopped my iron i have noticed that i dont really feel the need to have a BM and when i do its very small in size (not thin like pencil thin like one of the signs for colon cancer) and very little in amount. I have not noticed any blood. Im going to do the stool sample this Friday and im so nervous because im only 28. Everyone tells me not to worry and maybe im just not eating or drinking the correct foods to help absorb the iron.
1097812 tn?1258292704 I have a family history of cancer, on both sides I have gone for my scope 3 yrs, straight the first yr. I had 30 pre-cancerous polyps, next yr. I had 12, next yr I had 8, 2 of them turned out to be High grade dysplasha. So for the last 4 months I have gone back every month, first month I had 5 more, next month,6 more, next month 4 more plus a lot of inflamation, The Dr. called me and said he thinks I will end up having part of my colon removed.
Avatar f tn Genetic testing was also done, since the doctor said my husband was pretty young to develop colon cancer and for it to occur two more times. New surgery date is scheduled for April 30th with the latest being May 1st. Waiting on genetic results. Probably a full colonectomy. We have a nice weekend planned since the weather is going to be gorgeous. God Bless you and your husband and like you said Prayers help out the most. Take care.
Avatar f tn It can be a tricky business removing polyps in the ascending colon. There is no reason to panic. Colon cancer is very slow growing. In my opinion another colonoscopy in three months won't reveal much. Perhaps biopsies can be taken, but that still leaves unanswered questions. The one sure solution is surgery, and I wouldn't settle for anything less than the most experienced specialist in your area.
Avatar n tn I took her to the doctor, but they are referring her to a specialist for a CT scan and a colonoscopy. Does this sound like colon cancer? If so, what should I expect? Is there anything else that it could be? I'm really worried about her.
Avatar f tn Colon cancer is slow growing, so this has been coming for some time. Now that you have been diagnosed you will undergo "staging" which means a lot of different tests to determine the stage of your tumor. Then, typically your case will be presented to a tumor board which is a multidisciplinary panel of speciailsts who will determine a course of treatment for you.
