Common Questions and Answers about Gleevec and ovarian cancer

gleevec

1004138 tn?1316251113 OTOH, an antioxidant substance like melatonin might actually enhance the cancer-killing power of the drugs used in ovarian cancer, and it possibly reduces adverse effects of other drugs (like doxorubicin) without reducing their cancer-killing power. Everything needs to be individually researched.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed last year and was immediatley put on gleevec 400mg/day.At my last consult my metabolic stats had risen, hence blood tests to determine if the gleevec is no longer working.I am still in firstphase and wonder what my options are if the gleevec is no longer an option.Amin pretty good form, just very tired and a lot of bone pain.
Avatar m tn Hi, I don't know the answer -- but since both CML and Gleevec toxicity produce anemia because of marrow suppression, maybe it's not possible to tell the difference. E.g., both would show a low reticulocyte count. This full text paper on anemia from Gleevec https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ajh.23879 shows that other signs such as red blood cell size can vary, so that doesn't seem to help. Sorry.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CML in May with WBC at 222 and an enlarged spleen. Currently on Gleevec 400mg and the last FBC shows WBC at 2.1 . Still maintaining current dose of 400mg.Apart from some annoying blisters on my palm, other side effects rather acceptable.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CML and given Gleevec 400 ml. After taking gleevec for 2 weeks doctor took additional blood test. My WBC dropped from 36.5 to 7.1 and all other blood counts came down to normal range. I'm wondering if gleevec could give such fast hematological response or I was possibly misdiagnosed originally. I don't and didn't have any symptoms, my spleen and liver weren't enlarged, no enlarged lymph. Should I get second opinion asap? Please, help me.
Avatar n tn t want to see me, that fever was not from gleevec, and that I needed to monitor myself by myself by simply taken ibuprofen. This is what I did all last week and only this Monday he did a blood work. For now, what can I do to help my body to build my immune system back? Any vitamins? I'll appriciate any advice.
225036 tn?1294509400 Oz yesterday and they had a doctor/researcher on there who has come up with a pill (I think it was a pill) for cancer that only kills the cancer cells, not all the good cells and it has worked best on luekemia patients but apparently on 16 other cancers. They didn't say which ones but I thought of you and the other ladies on here. I can't remember the name now, glee something. Just know I am thinking of you and keeping you in my heart and in my prayers.
Avatar m tn I have CML and was treated with Gleevec for 4 years and achieved remission. I have for the past several months been experiencing sudden onset of weakness which last for hours, to days. My blood pressure which has remained under control for several years with atenolol has been running 145/105 and higher for the past three to four months. I have a feeling of fullness in my stomach, and I have sporatic episodes of mild coughing, this occurs maybe once a week.
Avatar n tn I have stage 1C ovarian cancer. I had a hysterectomy and staging surgery on November 15, 2007, and am currently undergoing chemotherapy. I am 46 years old, and had normal levels of hormones prior to diagnosis. Following the surgery, my doctor put me on estrogen patches (HRT). It is his belief that the benefits of estrogen outweigh the risks at my age. My pathology report showed that my ovarian cancer was estrogen receptive/reactive. So why is HRT okay?
498596 tn?1210700259 her sister (my mothers aunt) died of stomach cancer... and we wonder if that might have had any relationship to ovarian. That being said... I am very interested in this test as I do have an increased risk for breast on my paternal side and now a direct line geneticlly to ovarian cancer. I think the advice given above is a good one. To do the testing with a history or direct line to ovarian cancer...although whatever makes you most comfortable is what you should do. Hope this helps...
Avatar f tn 98% of all ovarian cysts are benign. Most women have several benign ovarian cysts in a life time. Uterine cancer and ovarian are not related which is weird. It is good they are checking. It may all turn out to be benign endometriosis. In the old days if you were past child bearing years they would do a hysterectomy. Now they know how important ovaries are to a woman's over all health and do not take them. Just because they test for cancer does not mean everyone has it.
Avatar n tn Ovarian cancer can't be diagnosised based just on those symptoms. CA125 marks several items in the body, not just ovarian cancer. When fighting a cold or a bad infection, one can have an elevated CA125. Your mom should let the Doctor's know of all her symptoms as this may be something totally not related to OVCA.
Avatar f tn 4% chance of ovarian cancer. It is lower if you are under 50. Also it is rare to have ovarian cancer in both ovaries. It happens but it is rare. I had both ovaries but I have the BRCA mutation and I had cancer in 14 places. They could see the cancer on the ultrasound. Over 98% of ovarian cysts are benign. What does your doctor say. You could have Polycystic Ovary syndrome which is not cancerous.
Avatar n tn What is the difference between ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer. I haven't had a period for 3 months now and I have a sharp pain in my lower right side, as well as back pain, especially in the mornings. once in a while i am off balance when walking. i am bloated, and a lot of times i don't have an appetite.
Avatar f tn I was 39 when diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. I had 2 kids and was not worried about perserving my fertility nor was I worried about surgical menopause. Menopause compared to cancer-wasn't worried about sweats, being moody or my sex drive, worry about -You first. Cancer, especially ovarian cancer is one scary cancer. Best of Luck to you.
Avatar n tn t mentioned any other symptoms except weight gain around the middle and frequent periods. The following are the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer. This is just to inform you about the disease. I'm not suggesting you have cancer: Ovarian Cancer Symptoms There are no obvious symptoms until the disease has advanced. Then the symptoms may include: Vague but persistent gastrointestinal complaints such as gas, nausea, indigestion. Frequency and/or urgency of urination.
Avatar f tn I am 52 years old and have been on BHRT for the past year. Three days ago I went to a new doctor to get the hormones adjusted and she said she does not prescribe bioidenticals and gave me a prescription for Prempro. I do not want to take this and I told her so.
Avatar f tn Could my recurrence of Ovarian cancer be attributed to my taking Evista for a year? I had ovarian cancer 15 years ago and after surgery and chemo, and a "second look" surgery with multiple biopsies was considered cured.I had a complete hysterectomy and the cancer seemed to be contained in my left ovary. Last winter I found a lump in my left groin which was biopsied and diagnosed as ovarian malignancy.
386450 tn?1263733624 I found an interview with Bill Paxton and he mentions that Barb had ovarian cancer.
Avatar n tn I have had the CA-125 test and it came back within normal limits, butr I am aware that this test is not a reliable screening for ovarian cancer. I have mild cramping off and on in every month where I would suspect my overies are located. I have back pain, but this is most likely due to back surgery I had 2 years ago. I have always had constipation issue and i had a baby 5 months ago so forget the reliability of teh clothes not fitting sign.
Avatar f tn How closely linked are ovarian and breast cancer? When I had initially gone in and got an ultrasound for my ovary (in Aug. I think) I also complained about pain in my right breast so they ultrasounded that too and they told me there was a tiny cyst (about 2 cm). It is still quite painful quite often. When I went in to get the ovary removed I asked my gyn. about the cyst in my breast and if it could be related and she kind of blew it off saying that it was a totally separate issue.
Avatar f tn I have a good idea for you, why not post this question in the ovarian cancer forum and see what advice these women have...
Avatar n tn Most ovarian cysts and masses are benign, even suspicious looking ones. If you do not have a family history or predisposition for ovarian cancer then your lifetime risk is less than 2%. And yes, the CA125 test is not accurate at diagnosing ovarian cancer. Benign (non-cancerous) conditions can cause an elevated result. A friend of mine had a CA125 level over 1000 (VERY HIGH) when she had a benign cyst. She unnecessarily lost not only her ovary but also her uterus and other ovary.
