Gabapentin for shingles pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for shingles pain

neurontin

Avatar n tn My Neurologist thinks the pain may be coming from the root ganglia, and has prescribed Gabapentin (Neurontin) 400 MG, 4 times a day, which does seem to take the edge off, but the pain never completely goes away. Could I have nerve damage as a result of shingles, and if so, how debilitating can it get, and will it get better? I welcome all replies. Thank you.
681148 tn?1437661591 Anyone who has taken Gabapentin (Neurontin) for a couple of months for the nerve pain post Shingles outbreak: What was the dosage you took to deal with the nerve pain and how long did you take it before the nerve pain stopped? I'm not concerned about the safety of the Neurontin at the low dosage I'm taking. I'm actually more concerned about the effectiveness.
Avatar f tn Hi Nervepainj. :) First, I'd like to add my Welcome with Tuck's and Mary camel's to our PM (Pain Management) Forum here on the MH (MedHelp) Community. As Tuck said, marycamel was, as always, correct on with some of the meds that might be able to help you with your neuropathy. Tuck definitely can tell you about all of the different neuropathy medications out there as she, like many others on MH, has been battling problems with neuropathy for numerous years.
Avatar f tn For the past 2 months I have been trying to deal with shingles I have had them in my left eye and going up into my forhead and hair. I have finally been told the eye is doing well but the pain is terrible. the only relief I get is to hold a wet cloth over that part of my face. The itching is unberable at time I feel I could reach in and pull the eye out.
Avatar m tn Another school of thought considers the persistent pain as subacute herpetic neuralgia if it lasts between 1 - 3 months, and as PHN, if it lasts beyond 3 months. The pain sometimes can last for months and even years. Shingles often occur in dermatomes, i.e. they follow the distribution of nerves in the skin. The pain of postherpetic neuralgia is generally limited to the area of the skin where the shingles had erupted. The pain may be sharp, piercing, throbbing or stabbing in nature.
Avatar f tn Can you still get shingles without ever getting chicken pox?
Avatar f tn oms-gabapentin 300 mg was prescibed to my mom for nerve pain and its a seizure medication? Any explinations she isnt epaleptic?
Avatar f tn I also have my twitches all over my body constantly)) but no medicine seemed to work for longer than 2 weeks, I am tired of living with this pain, everyday, for the past 3 years, waking up in the middle of the night with severe charlie horses that lasts for most of the time at least 8 minutes. The other day I had a very bad episode. My whole body was cramping all at once!! It was the worst pain I have experienced in my life!
Avatar f tn I am a 54 yr old male, in pretty good shape, non-smoker, non-drinker. For the past 2 years I have experienced pain in the left side of my chest with tingling in the left arm. I've seen 2 cardiologists and had a complete exam including an angiogram, showing no heart disease. Since then I've seen gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, and pain specialists. My new doctor suggested PHN and tested me for the virus anitbody, which I have.
Avatar n tn Meaning there remains a dull ache where you had the shingles. Gabapentin sometimes helps with that type of pain as it is a nerve pain. - Do ice packs help your head? I hope you get well soon. I really feel for you.
Avatar f tn While Gabapentin is used as anticonvulsant, it is also indicated for shingles or postherpetic neuralgiaand also for hyperhidrosis, headaches, diabetic neuropathy, hot flashes, and fibromyalgia. Common side effects of gabapentin include dizziness, somnolence, fatigue, fluid retention, nausea and vomiting. Take as prescribed and check with your doctor if you have any side effects. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn They told my is due to shingles but I never had shingles. can you help me I have been living with this pain for 4 years know. My skin is nob in my back and when it flames up it really hurts.
Avatar m tn Last week I saw yet another urologist and they gave me gabapentin which almost immediately helped. I feel a lot better but still have a 6-10 on pain scale. Been reading on postherpetic neuralgia and it sounds pretty close. I also read that the vaccine zostavex or something to that effect is helping countless people under age 50 even if they are already infected. Shingles was another thought is it possible the hsv2 is triggering shingles as I did have chicken pox??
Avatar f tn When I try to find info on gababantin I find that it's for the aftermath of shingles. What is the connection to ms and why do ms patients take it?
Avatar n tn I have been on gabapentin for about three weeks and my back and stomach are broke out in hives or my daughterin law says they look like boils on my back .
Avatar f tn I took gabapentin for years, for both restless leg syndrome and some relief from nerve pain. A year or so ago, my Sports and Spine medicine doc suggested I switch to Lyrica, as it is more powerful, you take lower doses, and clears out of your system better than gabapenting does. I was taking 800 or 900 mg. of gabapentin a day, sometimes more. I did get used to it after a while, so that it didn't make me drowsy, by the way. I switched to 50 mg.
Avatar n tn Pain is less or absent with physical activity. Most times the pain responds to Gabapentin, although lately I'm finding I have to take a whole lot more of it than I'm comfortable with. I have a very good GP but I think he's a little stumped with this one. I'm thinking there is something else at work here besides herpes. Any learned input would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn I was on gabapentin (1200mg) a day for about 6 months but it didn't work for me. I have chronic back pain but it doesn't seem to be nerve related like they thought at first. It may be myofascial pain syndrome. My sister in law has nerve pain and she takes a combination of drugs such as a small amount of Lyrica , a small amount of an antidepressant, a small amount of lamictal and so forth. Be open to whatever the right combination is for you.
Avatar m tn Some pain continued and I had more tests run 12 weeks later (herpeselect this time) and they came back negative, but the doctor also ran a test for IgG and IgM for zoster, both of which came back pretty high (6.7 for IgG, 3.2 for IgM) and he suggested that I had an unfortunately placed outbreak of shingles and prescribed some steroids and things got a little better. Some pain continued but it felt more like a tingling/itching nerve thing and there were no more outbreaks/bumps, etc.
Avatar f tn It has since spread farther right along my gum line and now includes the right side of my tongue and throat. It takes months for it to heal and for the pain and burning to subside to a tolerable level. Even room air touching the affected area is excruitating. I now believe that I have post-herpetic neuralgia as the pain is now not only severe but chronic.
6937315 tn?1386287618 s only FDA approved uses are for the nerve pain from shingles and as an anti-seizure med for epileptics, but is used off-label for a lot of things.
Avatar m tn it all started when I got shingles on lower back and down my right leg. this was 3 weeks ago. I was prescribed prednisone and Valaciclovir. this worked well, and the shingles is all but gone, rash almost cleared up, pain in leg gone. after 3 days of the treatment, I started getting a pain around my right eye. it may or may not have to do with shingles, i'm thinking its not related but I guess it could be.
922972 tn?1243985128 Greetings! I am a 51 year old female. In the fall of 2000 I noticed a rash on my right breast in the shape of an upside down "T". By the spring of 2001, one half of my right breast was flaming red with no blisters. I was placed on antibiotics by a Dermatologist with no help. There was no itching, burning or pain until the spring of 2001. I began to have stabbing pain in my right breast, as well as under my right breast across my ribs.
Avatar m tn Hi Justduff, I am so sorry to hear about your unusual situation. It must be horribly uncomfortable. I assume you have no skin rash or discolorations. The fact that your physician is using Gabapentin leads me to believe that he/she is also thinking this is a neurological condition. Nerve pain can be very difficult to treat successfully. I don't have Fibro - I have nerve damage due to injuries. We all react differently to different medications.

Avatar m tn Being treated with acyclovir, gabapentin, pain patches and opiods. At four different occasions with clinical presentation of shingles clearly presenting I tested 1800 to 1926 on the IgG test. However, the IgM test on all four occasions with shingles presenting ALWAYS tests IgM- EQUIVOCAL???? What does this mean? Does it mean that I have no antibodies on the IgM?
189269 tn?1189755825 My doctor prescribed me Gabapentin, used to control nerve pain or shingles. All my liver funtions are way out of wack, I feel like I am plugged in to a electrical outlet, sort of tingling itching sensation anyone try this.
Avatar f tn About six months ago I had a hemorrhoid flare up and treated it with a prescription foam and tucks pads. The problem was no one seemed to have the same symptoms I was experiencing. I had severe nerve pain that would sometimes paralyze me to the point I could not speak (all while managing to work and chase around my three year old). I explained this to my dr. who was not impressed by what she could see and blew off what I was telling her I felt.
