Common Questions and Answers about Forteo bone healing

forteo

Avatar n tn Hello hillre, Forteo is a man-made form of a hormone called parathyroid that exists naturally in the body. Forteo increases bone density and increases bone strength to help prevent fractures. Forteo is used to treat osteoporosis in men and women who have a high risk of bone fracture. Forteo can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid smoking cigarettes, or try to quit smoking altogether.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me that I have Osteoporosis and wants me to try Forteo an injection for two years. Has anyone tried this drug and what were your side effects, if any. I don't want to make my stomach problems worse than there already are.
Avatar f tn I have severe osteoporosis and am trying to take Forteo. I started out with half dose and have worked up to a full dose. The full dose 2 days in a row was disabling. My doctor suggested every other day. So I let the previous trial work its way out of my system for 5 days and tried another full dose. This is three days after the dose and I am weaker each day. I move in slow motion. My doctor is puzzled. Anyone had a similar experience?
Avatar f tn My  20 year son has severe chronic bone pain, osteoporosis and has had multiple fractures.  We have also had bone biopsy with showed a mineralization defect(focal osteomalacia) and high turn bone turnover but these do not lend themselves to a diagnosis.  His blood levels of calcium and vit D are normal.  He received a Pamidronate infusion in October 2004 and that is when the pain began.  He was completely debilitated at that time as he is now.
Avatar f tn I have been on Forteo daily injections for 1 year and I have experienced considerable joint pains which did not exist prior to treatment. My left hip and knee, my right knee and my hands have been getting worse each month. Has anyone else experienced similar reactions?
Nicelady Medications themselves can be classified as antiresorptive or bone anabolic agents. Teriparatide (Forteo) is also approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.
908504 tn?1269103899 He also wanted me to try the injections of Forteo but my Aunt had bone cancer in her hips so I am somewhat leary of that drug. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I am in really bad pain.
Avatar m tn I had a foot injury in Oct.2008 (sesnoide bone under foot/below big toe). The xray and MRI indicated fracture but the bone scan said no fracture. The injury got much better (I was able to wearing running shoes) in Mar 2009. I went on vacation, walked too much and have not recovered. I have developped a constant swelling in my left foot. In the summer, when I take a hot shower or just when I wake up, my foot becomes red and swollen.
Avatar n tn He scheduled a CT for confirmation. The CT confirmed the non-union. He wrote a prescription for Forteo, and the use of a bone growth stimulator, stating that if, after an additional 8 weeks there is still no sign of bone fusion, he would do a bone graft and replace the hardware. I feel as though he is not listening to my complaints of pain, edema and the inability to sleep secondary to the pain and discomfort.
Avatar f tn So they sent him home and told him to try Forteo. Well, Forteo has a side effect which is increased risk of bone cancer, so he stopped it. And I put him on Strontium, which is a supplement that builds bone density. Strontium is used in Europe and a pharmaceutical company has a patent on Strontium Ranelate, which is Strontium with an artificial substance linked to it. They can't get a patent on Strontium since it is natural.

Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is much more to the comparison than comparing bone to bone healing to soft tissue healing. Conventional wisdom suggests that the boney healing is more predictable, but that assumes all other things are equal, which they rarely are.
Avatar n tn they inserted a screw to try to heal it. Now i am getting a bone graft surgery and was wondering the odds of it healing and if i will get full range of motion back? The break is at the bottom of the bone near the ulna and will there be enough blood flow to reach it?
Avatar f tn Recent x-rays showed that the bone was not healing. My consultant seemed suprised as I am a young and healthy non-smoker. I have been partial weight bearing on crutches for the last 2 month and doing well in physio. They suggested that I have the bottom screw in my knee removed, which I am due to have done in 2 weeks. Please can you advise me if this operation is generally successful in promoting bone growth?
Avatar n tn im going for my xray on 17/11/09 to c how the bone is healing and tghe hopefully i shud be able to weight bear.
Avatar n tn I would like to know if my experience with bone graft surgery is in normal range and what to expect in recovery/healing process. I had surgery 8 days ago to place bone grafts for future implants for top center two teeth. Most of the swelling is gone but gum tissue is still very tender and bone beneath surgical area still throbbing as well as two teeth on either side of surgical site.
Avatar f tn Forgot to ask: If there is less soreness, does that mean it's possibly healing (the fracture) or is that just the soft tissue healing? And if the bone scan shows it's not healed yet, is there a chance it could heal still (after 12 weeks) or is surgery my best bet? And if some healing has happened, how much would be considered to be good as far as that it will continue? E.g.
Avatar n tn This time, the doctor again removed the old rod and replaced it with a bigger one. He also put more cadaver bone in and did a bone graph from my hip to place in the still broken part. Can anyone tell me if this sounds normal. I did get a second opinion before the second surgery and that trauma surgeon also told me my femur stopped healing. Thanks in advance for any help or insight.
Avatar m tn My question is, does drinking 5 - 8 drinks, one night per week have a significant effect on my bone healing? The only scientific studies I could find regarding this involved alcoholics, not casual drinkers. Thanks! P.S. I do not use tobacco.
