Common Questions and Answers about Forteo and bone healing

forteo

Avatar n tn Hello hillre, Forteo is a man-made form of a hormone called parathyroid that exists naturally in the body. Forteo increases bone density and increases bone strength to help prevent fractures. Forteo is used to treat osteoporosis in men and women who have a high risk of bone fracture. Forteo can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid smoking cigarettes, or try to quit smoking altogether.

Avatar f tn I have severe osteoporosis and am trying to take Forteo. I started out with half dose and have worked up to a full dose. The full dose 2 days in a row was disabling. My doctor suggested every other day. So I let the previous trial work its way out of my system for 5 days and tried another full dose. This is three days after the dose and I am weaker each day. I move in slow motion. My doctor is puzzled. Anyone had a similar experience?
Avatar f tn I have worked with this site for many years assisting people to get the medicines that they need. You should check and see if you qualify for the Forteo assistance program: http://www.needymeds.org/drug_list.taf?_function=name&name=Forteo Good luck! I am a breast cancer patient in a drug study taking the osteoporosis drug, Zometa. There is some promising data that suggests osteoporosis drugs may help prevent breast cancer patients having recurrances of cancer as bone cancer.
Avatar f tn My  20 year son has severe chronic bone pain, osteoporosis and has had multiple fractures.  We have also had bone biopsy with showed a mineralization defect(focal osteomalacia) and high turn bone turnover but these do not lend themselves to a diagnosis.  His blood levels of calcium and vit D are normal.  He received a Pamidronate infusion in October 2004 and that is when the pain began.  He was completely debilitated at that time as he is now.
Avatar f tn I have been on Forteo daily injections for 1 year and I have experienced considerable joint pains which did not exist prior to treatment. My left hip and knee, my right knee and my hands have been getting worse each month. Has anyone else experienced similar reactions?
Nicelady I just had my frist Bone scan and the office called me and said I had osteoporosis and that they called in RX for Atelvia.. I picked up the RX and was reading the information and I am concerned about the side effect of this medication. Is this the only way to help with osteoporosis? Is there anything elso another way?
908504 tn?1269103899 He also wanted me to try the injections of Forteo but my Aunt had bone cancer in her hips so I am somewhat leary of that drug. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I am in really bad pain.
Avatar m tn I had a foot injury in Oct.2008 (sesnoide bone under foot/below big toe). The xray and MRI indicated fracture but the bone scan said no fracture. The injury got much better (I was able to wearing running shoes) in Mar 2009. I went on vacation, walked too much and have not recovered. I have developped a constant swelling in my left foot. In the summer, when I take a hot shower or just when I wake up, my foot becomes red and swollen.
Avatar n tn He scheduled a CT for confirmation. The CT confirmed the non-union. He wrote a prescription for Forteo, and the use of a bone growth stimulator, stating that if, after an additional 8 weeks there is still no sign of bone fusion, he would do a bone graft and replace the hardware. I feel as though he is not listening to my complaints of pain, edema and the inability to sleep secondary to the pain and discomfort.
Avatar f tn Other Gilead experienced persons, and there are a few here, can tell you more. Depending upon your income, and your stage of cirrhosis, you may be able to get your meds totally pro bono, side stepping Part D completely.
Avatar f tn So they sent him home and told him to try Forteo. Well, Forteo has a side effect which is increased risk of bone cancer, so he stopped it. And I put him on Strontium, which is a supplement that builds bone density. Strontium is used in Europe and a pharmaceutical company has a patent on Strontium Ranelate, which is Strontium with an artificial substance linked to it. They can't get a patent on Strontium since it is natural.
Avatar n tn He had to have bone taken from his hip and grafted to a bone in his foot. This friend has previously been an occasional user of methamphetamine, and has not smoked since since the accident. He wants to do it once, but is trying to find out what the effects are (if any) of methamphetamine on healing bones. Any information you can share would be helpful. Cheers!
Avatar n tn I haven't had them but you can look up manuka honey. It can and does speed the healing of wounds that I've used it on, usually 15+ or 20+ minimum. I'm not sure what the Dr said to put on it but depending on the level you get, it can be very effective. Internally, bone broth can help your body a bunch with wound healing, can be purchased but homemade is best.

Avatar f tn I have chronic periodontitis and severe bone loss. Unfortunately, #6 needs to be extracted. My dentist proposes to extract the tooth and when the site heals perform a block bone graft (there isn't enough bone for a socket perservation). Originally ridge augmentation, GTR, and block bone graft were going to be perfomed at time of the extraction. After studyng my X-rays my dentist changed his mind. I'm disappointed and concerned; I believe that the bone in that area will recede even more.
Avatar n tn This is going to be a VERY long process. I fractured that bone and the Talus in my left foot and I was in 2 non weight bearing casts for a total of 7 weeks and it took me another 4 weeks post cast to be able to walk without to much pain. The bones in the foot take a long time to heal. I'm surprised your allowed to walk on it at all. I would think that a second MRI would only be necessary if the healing is delayed or your pain increases with time.

I used work out in gym and Now, I am conscious about my recovery. whether I will be able to do gym normally or will there be any difference with sticks out collar bone fracture and how long will it take me to work out again. Avatar n tn Non-union of fracture is reported when there is presence of a post-fracture defect in a long bone beyond a reasonable expected healing date, or if no radiographic progression of healing is noted. What type of non-union you had? Is it Atrophic non-union or Hypertrophic non-union? If you see the figures, 90% of non-unions are treated successfully with 1 surgery. In 80% of non-unions, limb length and alignment are restored (*). If infection is present, often >1 surgery is required.
Avatar f tn I had a BMD issue a couple of years ago (suffered 3 hip fractures over 2 years) and after seeing 7 different doctors my Primary Care seemed to put a ton of things together and believed I was not absorbing calcium and may estrogen levels were super low and virtually non existent. I was put on Ogestral and Forteo and knock on wood- no more injuries and a BMD increase of 22% in 1 yr. However, I started having what I thought was food allergies.
Avatar m tn , for a non diabetic it is looking like 6-12 months are there any web sites relating to healing for diabetics and what other things to look for? are there more complications etc...
