Common Questions and Answers about Forteo and bone cancer

forteo

Avatar n tn Hello hillre, Forteo is a man-made form of a hormone called parathyroid that exists naturally in the body. Forteo increases bone density and increases bone strength to help prevent fractures. Forteo is used to treat osteoporosis in men and women who have a high risk of bone fracture. Forteo can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid smoking cigarettes, or try to quit smoking altogether.

Avatar f tn I have severe osteoporosis and am trying to take Forteo. I started out with half dose and have worked up to a full dose. The full dose 2 days in a row was disabling. My doctor suggested every other day. So I let the previous trial work its way out of my system for 5 days and tried another full dose. This is three days after the dose and I am weaker each day. I move in slow motion. My doctor is puzzled. Anyone had a similar experience?
Avatar f tn My  20 year son has severe chronic bone pain, osteoporosis and has had multiple fractures.  We have also had bone biopsy with showed a mineralization defect(focal osteomalacia) and high turn bone turnover but these do not lend themselves to a diagnosis.  His blood levels of calcium and vit D are normal.  He received a Pamidronate infusion in October 2004 and that is when the pain began.  He was completely debilitated at that time as he is now.
Avatar f tn I have been on Forteo daily injections for 1 year and I have experienced considerable joint pains which did not exist prior to treatment. My left hip and knee, my right knee and my hands have been getting worse each month. Has anyone else experienced similar reactions?
Nicelady I just had my frist Bone scan and the office called me and said I had osteoporosis and that they called in RX for Atelvia.. I picked up the RX and was reading the information and I am concerned about the side effect of this medication. Is this the only way to help with osteoporosis? Is there anything elso another way?
Avatar m tn I had a foot injury in Oct.2008 (sesnoide bone under foot/below big toe). The xray and MRI indicated fracture but the bone scan said no fracture. The injury got much better (I was able to wearing running shoes) in Mar 2009. I went on vacation, walked too much and have not recovered. I have developped a constant swelling in my left foot. In the summer, when I take a hot shower or just when I wake up, my foot becomes red and swollen.
Avatar f tn So they sent him home and told him to try Forteo. Well, Forteo has a side effect which is increased risk of bone cancer, so he stopped it. And I put him on Strontium, which is a supplement that builds bone density. Strontium is used in Europe and a pharmaceutical company has a patent on Strontium Ranelate, which is Strontium with an artificial substance linked to it. They can't get a patent on Strontium since it is natural.
Avatar n tn He scheduled a CT for confirmation. The CT confirmed the non-union. He wrote a prescription for Forteo, and the use of a bone growth stimulator, stating that if, after an additional 8 weeks there is still no sign of bone fusion, he would do a bone graft and replace the hardware. I feel as though he is not listening to my complaints of pain, edema and the inability to sleep secondary to the pain and discomfort.
Avatar f tn Other Gilead experienced persons, and there are a few here, can tell you more. Depending upon your income, and your stage of cirrhosis, you may be able to get your meds totally pro bono, side stepping Part D completely.
Avatar n tn I went for a bone scan they injected the radio active material into the vein and then I went in for the scan and the only place they detected the radio active material was on the injection site. So they could not do the bone scan. What could have happened to the radio active material.
Avatar m tn The lump thing on my jaw has me concerned, but I have no idea if its typical of bone cancer or not. Also, with all the CT scans, and with my recent normal blood count, can I rule out cancer? Ive had this uneasy anxiety about having cancer for two years, and I would think something major would have shown by now, atleast in my blood counts. The anxiety just came on one day, and it just hasnt left. Thanks for your help!
Avatar m tn The first vet took a needle biopsy and said there were cancer cells. It could be bone or fatty cancer. She wanted to do a biopsy but after looking at x-rays she was convinced it was bone. I got a second opinion, the second vet did not want to biopsy said it was to painful we would just watch it. This was Nov. it is now March. In Dec. the second vet said it had doubled in size he was sure it was bone cancer and he had only a couple of months left.
Avatar f tn I need to know what the symptoms of bone cancer after breast cancer r..I had both breast removed and now I have knot on my elbows and a knot come up on my knee that I can't put weight on if I do it feels like I'm being burned, then it hurts for days.does anyone know the symptoms of bone cancer?
Avatar f tn s entirely possible that this lesion has been present for some time and has no connection to her breast cancer. You might discuss this is detail with her Oncologist. Regards ....
Avatar f tn also i seem to have multiple clacifications thoughout my body and bone pain lt.wrist and hand especially my knees and legs . my tsh level for the past yr are high and recently vit d deficiant . i take 112mcg of levothyroxine now .what bothers me the most is the bone pain that limits activity and the fatigue i feel at times . in my heart i feel tsh meds have side effects that really need to be addressed ! IS THERE A CORRELATION FOR WE WOMEN REALLY HAVE TO KNOW.
Avatar n tn However, with a history of breast cancer, the presence of recurrence should be ruled-out. The presentation of a cancer recurrence in the bone is very similar to that of degenerative changes, with pain as the most common complaint. I would suggest seeking consult with your oncologist in order to know the cause. For the meantime, you can take any over-the-counter pain medicine to relieve you of the discomfort. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Hi, Lung cancer does have a tendency to metastasize to bone. However, in this case, there is no mass in the lung at all, only something in the bone. It would be pretty unlikely for cancer in the lung to present in this manner. The question would be if the finding in the bone appears malignant. If this was the case, it would likely have been discussed with you. An abnormal bone island or cyst is not cancer, but due to its presence, it may produce pain.
Avatar f tn Do fractures in bones containing Bone Mets increase the spread of the cancer cells?
Avatar f tn I had a BMD issue a couple of years ago (suffered 3 hip fractures over 2 years) and after seeing 7 different doctors my Primary Care seemed to put a ton of things together and believed I was not absorbing calcium and may estrogen levels were super low and virtually non existent. I was put on Ogestral and Forteo and knock on wood- no more injuries and a BMD increase of 22% in 1 yr. However, I started having what I thought was food allergies.
Avatar n tn First ..I am SO very very very sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Its so UNfair!!!! We are new to the whole cancer thing..my mom diagnosed last month with breast cancer. I want to know what the answer is to your question! if the breast was removed, you had radiation & chemo, then I am totally totally confused as to how it can come back!! And..so fast! I hope you get a very detailed response from the doctor here on this forum. I wish you the very best...take care...
17542556 tn?1457654206 My doctor wanted me to do a total body scan with nuclear medicines because of my bone pain. Is this necessary? Do I need x-rays at all? Should I have a bone density scan? Is this bone pain (which is tolerable) a serious side effect? Sometimes I think my oncologist only wants to make money.
