Common Questions and Answers about Foot pain big toe joint

foot

Avatar f tn For years I have had a stabbing pain in the joint of my left big toe. I get it every other day and it lasts for 8 to 10 hours at a time. No doctor can find any answers as to why they just give me medicines that don't help. I have had just about every test except MRI and my insurance won't pay it and I can't afford that. The pain is in the joint closest to the foot area. Does anyone have any answers?
1558461 tn?1295392601 Can cronic Arthritis in a big toe, cause the metatarsal and heel pain to worsen?
Avatar n tn I have a constant pain in my left foot that is in my big toe joint and goes back towards my arch. It hurts to walk, run and change direction doing either. I am a baseball coach and I need my feet and don't want to be in pain anymore. This has been going on now for about 3 weeks and is getting slowly worse. What can I do?
Avatar f tn Since 1997 I have had a stabbing burning pain in my left big toe joint closest to the foot. I have seen several podiatrists plus nerve specialists and now a pain medicine Doctor is helping a little. One response from a reader said maybe it was Mortons neuroma. Is there anyone who can confirm this so I can take it to my Doctor?
Avatar f tn My left big toe gives a shooting pain with the toe-off movement. It has been feeling this way since June of 2010 and there was no trauma that I know of, but I did wear a pair of shoes that was tight over the metatarsal-phalangeal joint. I have tried stretches, tucking the big toe under and pressing my big toe down lifting my heel with some relief.
479581 tn?1317757488 Getting a bone graft to increase length of the 1st metatarsal would be beneficial and allow you to continue bending the great toe joint. You have 33 joints in you foot and 25% of your weight pushes through that big toe joint. If the procedure is done correctly, you should have most of your pain resolved with this procedure. A graft taken from the calcaneus or pelvis bone increases the chance of the graft to take.
Avatar f tn I was fine at first but when I got into my stride and my foot slipped down the boot (as always), the top of the joint of my left big toe (where the toe meets the skin of the foot) must have been pressing significantly on the top of the boot, in a place where there's also a metal fastener for the lace. I had to hobble in pain for about half a mile before I could find somewhere to stop and take the insole out.
Avatar m tn Acute gouty attack usually presents with sudden pain involving the big toe, knee, or ankle joints, the joint appears warm and red. It is usually very tender, and even fever. This can be managed with pain and anti-inflammatory medications. For proper diagnosis, it is best that you have this checked by your doctor for proper evaluation. Diagnostic tests that may be done include synovial fluid analysis, joint x-rays and uric acid determination in the blood or urine.
Avatar f tn Either a fusion of the big toe (an arthrodesis) or removal of bone from the joint (an arthroplasty) is performed for chronic problems of your big toe. Arthritis of the big toe is called hallux rigidus. Get an X-ray done and also try conservative therapy with pain killers, modification by use of appropriate boots and physiotherapy before considering surgery. Take care!
Avatar f tn That made toe 1 and toe 2 kissing cousins so to speak. Beyond all the surgery pain, Im STILL having intense pain attacks in my big toe joint. I went back to Dr today and he xrayed and said everything looks good and besides I didn't even operate there. He blew me off, gave me Ultram and sent me home crying. Please can somebody tell me what is going on and what can i do to make it stop? Help!
Avatar n tn Hallux rigidus is actually a form of degenerative arthritis (a wearing out of the cartilage within the joint that occurs in the foot and other parts of the body. It causes pain and stiffness in the big toe, and with time it gets increasingly harder to bend the toe. X-rays can diagnose the condition. Treatment depends upon the severity of damage of cartilage. Physical therapy, NSAID’s, cortisone injections and rest can help in treating the condition.
395251 tn?1224173392 I have also always had very flat feet. The pain is in the upper portion of my right big toe, and seems to be located throughout the upper joint. It also sometimes feels as if there is maybe an extra bone at the bottom of that joint as well, but I can not feel it with my hand, it just feels like I am stepping on a rock or something, inside that joint. To rap things up, I have also been walking more than I did before, as I am trying to loose some weight.
Avatar f tn Just returned home from having outpatient joint replacement on my right big toe. No pain, no crutches, just the shoe. Laying here applying ice packs now with little swelling. I have a follow-up visit to my Doctor on Thurday, so I'll keep you posted.
Avatar n tn You are having pain at the big toe joint b/c the joint is out of alignment. Wearing high heels can add more stress to the joint. Have you taken x-rays of the foot? It helps to evaluate the bunion and get a better perspective to see what needs to be surgically done. If the mal-alignment is severe, you would need a procedure that requires 6 weeks on crutches. If not, you would most likely get a procedure that would allow immediate weight bearing.
Avatar m tn Help. i woke up on Wed and couldn't go to work because my foot was so sore (where big toe joint is, and ball). Took 4 ibprofrin and hobbled into work 3 hours later. Got through day. Next morning i woke up at 3 am with more pain than i could fathom. Foot was red and very swollen. Excrutiating. Caught taxi to Dr. he said i have gout? blood tests showed normal uric acid level. Treated me for gout anyway. I'm on colgout. It's been 5 days. Still can't walk.
Avatar n tn Yesterday, I saw a foot and ankle surgeon about pain in my left big toe. Films showed a sesamoid fracture, non-articular bone spur outside the joint, and plenty of arthritis. Recommendation was surgery to remove bone fragment and shave off spur when pain was troublesome enough (which it is today). I am a martial arts instructor, which requires me to work barefoot, with intermittent running and jumping, approximately 4 hours per day six days a week.
4600149 tn?1375022590 I am currently in NY staying with my ex and his parents with our 9 year old child - Im from England. the flight over on 14th July resulted in me having extremely swollen ankles and feet which lasted 3 days. I have never had this problem when flying before.
Avatar f tn since 1997 have had severe left toe pain in first joint. It's like a burning stabbing sensation. Can't find any answers.
Avatar n tn He is not the podiatrist that did my first surgery and said that the first surgery was somehow not done correctly and that now he would have to go in and do three incisions(one on the big toe, the 2nd toe and the 3rd toe. He said recovery time would be about 8 weeks and I would have to wear a boot that comes up to my knee. I do not know if I should consider having a second surgery? Has anyone else ever had a second surgery to correct a previous bunion surgery? If so, what were the results?
Avatar f tn I had two unsuccessful joint replacements in the big toe. I would not do it again. Now I need the fusion, and I have gotten four opinions. I did not research the first time. This time I want to be sure. I never realized how risky foot surgery is. Most doctors now tell me that they won't do the implants anymore. I feel like a guinea pig. My toe is now in the air and the rest of my foot is being stressed. The toes next to the big toe are turning under it. It's a mess.
12035457 tn?1423027595 I have had for as long as I can remember a deformed big toe on my left foot. It is almost as if the bone between the two joints never grew, but the tow then crooks upwards. Half of the toe on the upper right side is numb, and incrementally my pain has increased on the bottom as all the pressure is on the joint. Theres burning and odd feelings but It has come to a point where it is 24/7 aching. I have attached an image below. Any suggestions would be fantastic and much appreciated.
Avatar m tn Its hard to answer this question without knowing your age, sex and medical history. I assume you have OA in your big toe joint (be sure it isn't the more popular gout). The initial aim of treatment for gout is to settle the symptoms of an acute attack.[35] Repeated attacks can be prevented by different drugs used to reduce the serum uric acid levels.[35] Ice applied for 20 to 30 minutes several times a day decreases pain.
Avatar f tn I broke my pinkie toe on my right foot less than a week ago and about 2 days after they put me in a boot to help the toe heal my big toe started to hurt. It is not red, swollen or hot to the touch it is just very painful when pressure is put on it or I try to bend it. They took an x-ray of the whole foot and only the pinkie fracture showed up. I'm not sure what to do next?
Avatar m tn This is Capsulitis, where the joint has been surrounded by ligaments, resulting in immobility of the toe joint. It is usually accompanied by pain, swelling etc. The end result is crossover where the toe actually crosses over the big toe.
Avatar m tn Grasp the big toe near the base of the toe close to the big toe joint. Gently flex the toe upward until resistance is met and mild discomfort is experienced. Then hold for approximately 10 seconds. Perform this 3 times; then flex the toe downward in the same maneuver for 3 sets of 10 seconds each. Then do this unassisted and increase for 6 sets and till you are able to perform them completely.
Avatar n tn It started as severe pain, mostly in the front joint of the toe and radiating out from there. There was increased pain to the touch. The pain subsided for a week and has come back again this week. When I initially had the pain, I visited 2 podiatrists. The first one thought he saw a slight fracture or crack in my toe on x-ray. The second one dismissed this and said I had gout. He gave me colchacine and an antibiotic because he thought the toe might be infected as well.
