Common Questions and Answers about Fentanyl oral

Avatar m tn Hi there, and welcome, or should I say aloha? I don't have any personal experience with fentanyl patches, but I believe they are strong and you've been on them for a long time. I believe they should probably be tapered as it seems you have been doing. As far as whether you actually need them anymore, well that is a conversation you need to have with a doctor. If you think your doctor lacks experience, is it possible that you can speak to a different one?
Avatar f tn I've been on fentanyl 50mg for 7 months and I really want off of it now. I tried to just rip off the patch several months ago...very bad move. It was terrible. I've read where you could cut the patch if it was a mylan patch only. I also read where someone went from 50mg to 25 to 50 then went 25 to 50 to 25 and then 25 to 25 to 25mg as a way to work my was down on the dosage. I'm really scared.
Avatar n tn Conversions from one opiate to another are typically done reducing the new opiate dose by 20-30% for cross tolerance. Converting from fentanyl back to oral pain meds is a difficult conversion, and may require adjustments by your doctor. Do not adjust the dosage on your own or take more than you are currently prescribed without your doctors permission and guidance.
Avatar n tn I was a mess when I was on Fentanyl so I switched to an oral opiate and then tapered until I was at a reasonable level to jump cold turkey. What was the fentanyl prescribed for? What are your plans for managing your pain? I'm assuming it's pretty serious because Fentanyl is just about the strongest pain med there is. I admire your courage and strength. I am so happy you are feeling better. Please keep us updated.
Avatar f tn Would it be possible for him to switch you to some form of long-acting ORAL medication rather than the patch? Of course, the long acting oral medications do not last 24-36 hours like the patch is SUPOSED TO, but you're not getting that amount o fpain relief from the patch now, so not having that length with an oral medication wouldn't be a big change for you. There are many long acting medications out there, so there's many options.
8552937 tn?1398781959 Oh boy, chewing the patches is NOT a good idea, for many many reasons. For ONE, it's VERY VERY dangerous, with many people overdosing on it when taking it that way. The gel contained in the patch is meant to be a slow release medication, not to be released all at once. You're not only defeating the purpose of a medication like Fentanyl, but you're also putting yourself at risk. Fentanyl is a strong enough narcotic when taken as directed.
Avatar f tn On first visit, they changed me from Norco 10/325 one every six hours, prescribed by my PCP to fentanyl patch 12mcg. I have severe tmj (have had 4 surgeries) and am waiting for a jaw replacement surgery. I am 31 years old. Today I saw a different doc at PM clinic who prescribed 50mcg patch. I thought the Norco was working well and didn't really want to switch, but they insist I try it. To make a long story short, the patch makes me feel like crap and I am not having relief.
1326023 tn?1274867436 I found a few charts and they are all basically similar. 315-404mgs of morphine is equivilant to about 100 mcg of fentanyl. Thats oral morphine. The IV morphine chart is different. I do know that fentany is one of the strongest opiate medications available.. I believe it is much stronger than oral morphine. At least that is what I have heard and read. I also saw a show on TLC (Dr. G Medical Examiner) and she also stated fentanyl is the strongest opiate medication you can be prescribed.
Avatar m tn would they switch you over to fentanyl and then taper the fentanyl and then move you to an oral med???
Avatar m tn I would think a good Pharmacy or a Pain Clinic would order them for you. The generic is Oral Transmucosal Fentanyl Citrate (OTFC) and the trademark name is Actiq®, manufactured by Cephalon. I would also check to see if your insurance covers them. I wish you the best...
Avatar m tn Oral 24-hour Morphine (mg/day) Fentanyl Patch (mcg/hr) 225 to 314 mg/day 75 mcg/hr However, this is just a calculation based on the limited medical information I was presented. Since I do not have your liver and kidney status, it will be difficult for me to recommend the exact dosing regimen. Please consult your provider using this as a guideline. 2. If you are on Opana ER 30mg, why are you still taking Dilaudid?
Avatar n tn i have been on oxycontin 40mg for six monthes it wasnt releaving any pain so my doc put me on oral morphine and fentanyl patches and the transition was horrible so i know what your goin through please hang in there it will get better.
Avatar f tn I was thinking about this before I answered b/c it's quite the question....1. Are you ready to quit? You ran short to ward off w/d's so what makes the w/d's more doable now? Perhaps your thinking that the w/d's are not doable (which they are) and your just scared? Is it possible that when the 2 days are up you'll feel like **** so you'll be running back to the dr? It is VERY possible for you to be able to put the fentanyl down....just want to know if your really ready?
Avatar f tn When we arrived and they saw the Fentanyl Patch, the first thing they assumed was overdose. They did a tox screen and found no opiates in her system. The patch had been replaced approximately 24 hours prior. She has been on the Fentanyl Patch (100 mcg) for about 3 years and uses a tegaderm patch over it to hold it in place. It was on her stomach. She always places the patches on her stomach or upper arm in a fatty area. This is the 4th ER visit in the past 12 months due to withdrawals.
Avatar m tn Fentanyl (Transdermal, Transbuccal, Transmucosal, Sublingual) Norfentanyl 4-N-(N-propionylanilino) piperidine 4-N-(Nhydroxypropionylanilino) piperidine 1-(2-phenethyl)-4-N-(Nhydroxypropionylanilino) piperidine (Source: Remitigate.com) As for my experience with transdermal fentanyl, when I used that patch, I found them effective to 2 days only, after only 3-6 months of use. For me, the problem with transdermal fentanyl was a rapid development of opioid tolerance.
Avatar f tn I have been on fentanyl since my first failed fusion 8 years ago. My primary care dr said I would realistically never get off of it. I want to now that my back has fused. I have a lot of pain at present after the hardware removal. My pain has not been controlled because of the fentanyl. I was warned but there was nothing I could do to prepare for it. I feel like someone was digging for hours in my flesh! I want to get off the patch as soon as I heal from surgery. How should I start?
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been on Percocet 10/325 along with Neurontin, Flexeril, Valium for about a decade. I was switched to 75 MCG Fentanyl patch 2 weeks ago. Valium was stopped 3 weeks ago. The 1st week I could not sleep at all. Drowsy, though. Shaky, cold. My doctor said it was withdrawal. Now at week 2, I sleep about 2 hours, very shaky, freezing cold, (I never get cold) Absolutely miserable BUT have great pain relief. Must stay in bed.
Avatar f tn I have a rare tumor/cancer for the last 10 years, I also have an oncologist at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. I have been on fentanyl patch and the oral "lolly pop" the same quantity the last four years. I have to say it has controlled my pain better than any other medications, tens units, patches with medication. I have easily seen 5 to 6 pain doctors with all the moves to different states due to my husbands jobs.
9262784 tn?1402699755 First off, I suffer from a bunch of health problems all stemming from Gastric Bypass in 2006! I have been on Fentanyl and Oxycodone for 5+ years. I am on 75mcg every 48 hours under doctor's care. I have never once abused these patches ever! Last month I had a bit of a disagreement with my PA at the pain clinic when I questioned why they were testing an area that didn't bother me and my mouth said something about erroneous billing, she got mad, I got mad and I left.
Avatar n tn I'm curious as to what you're doing for your original pain? I was on Fentanyl, along with various narcotic breakthrough meds but felt like the Fentanyl changed me. It's hard to describe. I came off the Fentanyl easily enough since I was on the breakthrough meds. Now I'm down to 10 to 20 mg. of oxycodone every six hours. I've always wanted to come off to see where my real pain is but I think fear has kept me from trying. But I am still trying, though slowly.
