My husband started on Gemfibrozil to lower his cholesterol at the beginning of the year. On 2/14/08 we found out we were pregnant, but miscarried about 5 weeks later. We have been trying again since May, but I recently discovered that Gemfibrozil (and similar meds) may cause male infertility or reduced fertility. Is this accurate? If so, how long would it take for the medicine to clear his system and his fertility to return? We have 3 healthy kids and have had 2 m/c (2003 & 2008).

I have noticed since I began taking fenofibrate that I experience cloudy urine after I eat certain foods. It only happens the first time I uninate after eating these foods and becomes clear thereafter. It seems that it is triggered with creamy and greasy foods. Is there cause for concern? Thank you.

Fenofibrate in combination with a Statin drug can cause severe Rhabdomyolysis. I know because I have gone through it. My muscle pain got so severe that I couldn't even move my arms and I wound up in the ER with kidney (also a muscle) pain so severe, I was climbing the walls.

Also, the additional med that your doctor was talking about is most likely a fenofibrate like Tricor which is commonly added to a statin med. I am on both and they have worked very well for me with no side effects.

Ever since I started taking Zetia and Fenofibrate together as recommended by my DR, I have put on pounds, am more bloated around the belly,a nd have persistent chest pains. I noticed this has occurred ever since I have been on cholesterol lowering meds, but is more noticeable in the past year with the new combination of drugs. My HDL levels without Gemfibrozil has been tested at 938and ranges around 800's to 900's. With Gemfibrozil it has been lowered into the high 200's. My LDL levels are always in the 40's, so it is okay. I cannot find anything on the causes or the dilemmas of such seriously high HDL levels and need answers. I cannot just ask my doctor because I am under VA care for RSD Type 1 Whole Body and in another city, I have to fly to my appointments.

Exercise, Niacin, Fibrates ( such as gemfibrozil) and some statins can all raise HDL. Alcohol consumption in moderation can also do this. Whereas there is a strong link between low HDL and risk for cardiac death and heart attacks, there is very little evidence that increasing it with drugs ( appart from gemfibrozil and Niacin) actually improves patient's mortality.

my mother,55y, she got her lab result with rising in cholesterol and triglyceride about 3month ago. she started to take fenofibrate 200mg once a day. and now new lab result show normal range of all types of fat. does she need to continue with a maintenance dose of fenofibrate or it isnt necessary?

Recently , I was prescribed a fenofibrate (Trilipix 135 mg) along with Crestor. My cardio wanted this for helping in getting my triglycerides down. Your numbers are high, but you need to look at the breakdown. First off, your TGL's should be under 150. Not hard, just cut out the empty carbs like breads, sugars, pastas etc. Also, drinking will elevate your TGL's so don't over do it. You could start on a Fenofibrate like Tricor to lower your TGL's it works well. A statin will not really do that much.

Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).

You can google the warnings and side effects of that one. I also take Tricor for my hyperlipidemia. But that is a fenofibrate, not a statin. Have you ever tried the grandfather of statins, Lipitor? Talk to your doctor and get the straight answers.

Exercise will help increase your HDL which should be over 40. Make sure to ask your doctor before starting any exercise. You can also as about a fenofibrate, they are very effective at lowering your TGLs.

Meds I am currently on are levothyroxine and fenofibrate. I was on buspirone but just quit that a few days ago. I did have this happen one other time a few weeks ago, but the second time after that everything was normal, so I wasn't worried. I believe at that time I was off the meds or just starting them.

You could ask your doctor about a fenofibrate like Ticor, they are very effective on serum TGL's and have very few if any side effects. Good luck!
