Common Questions and Answers about Fenofibrate or gemfibrozil

501096 tn?1320874932 My husband started on Gemfibrozil to lower his cholesterol at the beginning of the year. On 2/14/08 we found out we were pregnant, but miscarried about 5 weeks later. We have been trying again since May, but I recently discovered that Gemfibrozil (and similar meds) may cause male infertility or reduced fertility. Is this accurate? If so, how long would it take for the medicine to clear his system and his fertility to return? We have 3 healthy kids and have had 2 m/c (2003 & 2008).
Avatar m tn I have noticed since I began taking fenofibrate that I experience cloudy urine after I eat certain foods. It only happens the first time I uninate after eating these foods and becomes clear thereafter. It seems that it is triggered with creamy and greasy foods. Is there cause for concern? Thank you.
315318 tn?1353251800 Are you sure you were on a fenofibrate or a fibrate? There are some issues when using a fibrate along with a statin but the side effect incidence when combining a fenofibrate and statin are extremely low. Being a diabetic is also an issue with the use of a fenofibrate as the combined therapy does not appear to be any more effective than a statin alone.
Avatar n tn Fenofibrate in combination with a Statin drug can cause severe Rhabdomyolysis. I know because I have gone through it. My muscle pain got so severe that I couldn't even move my arms and I wound up in the ER with kidney (also a muscle) pain so severe, I was climbing the walls.
Avatar n tn I have a website you can read or a book www.drmcdougall.com and/or the Starch Solution by Dr. McDougall or see the DVD Forks over Knives. It is really good. Anyway in the meantime I hope that you can have your doctor change your meds. It sounds like they are causing you problems.. I hope this helped.
1310757 tn?1273645428 My HDL levels without Gemfibrozil has been tested at 938and ranges around 800's to 900's. With Gemfibrozil it has been lowered into the high 200's. My LDL levels are always in the 40's, so it is okay. I cannot find anything on the causes or the dilemmas of such seriously high HDL levels and need answers. I cannot just ask my doctor because I am under VA care for RSD Type 1 Whole Body and in another city, I have to fly to my appointments.
600301 tn?1219689156 Exercise, Niacin, Fibrates ( such as gemfibrozil) and some statins can all raise HDL. Alcohol consumption in moderation can also do this. Whereas there is a strong link between low HDL and risk for cardiac death and heart attacks, there is very little evidence that increasing it with drugs ( appart from gemfibrozil and Niacin) actually improves patient's mortality.
Avatar m tn and now new lab result show normal range of all types of fat. does she need to continue with a maintenance dose of fenofibrate or it isnt necessary?
315318 tn?1353251800 Recently , I was prescribed a fenofibrate (Trilipix 135 mg) along with Crestor. My cardio wanted this for helping in getting my triglycerides down. I have not had a lipid profile done since starting on this med two months ago. However, since being a diabetic , I check my blood glucose (BG) many times during the day and what I am noticing is a clear trend in the BG numbers going lower at least over the last month or so.
7569019 tn?1460135460 was hospitalized for observation.. sent home with a new script for Gemfibrozil added to a new lower dose of atorvastatin ( was before strokes taking 80 mg.now down to 10) 4 days of major charlie horses Dr said stop taking Gemfibrozil.. and to help with the swelling I was put on lasix furosemide 20 mg and pot chloride 20 meg.. 527657 tn?1214051850 Concurrent use of gemfibrozil and statin drugs such as simvastatin should be avoided. Please discuss the possible risks vs. benefits of taking these 2 drugs with your physician.
Avatar n tn Could my heart medicine (metropolol tartrate, gemfibrozil or metformin) be causing me to have a continuing ED problem and would viagra or other med help?? Intercourse is impossible now..Thank you.. This discussion is related to inability to ejaculate.
597239 tn?1223778770 hi, what are the characteristics of shoulder pain related to heart attack? is it local or diffused pain?how long does it take? is it possible that gemfibrozil cause local shoulder pain as a side effect?
Avatar n tn Your numbers are high, but you need to look at the breakdown. First off, your TGL's should be under 150. Not hard, just cut out the empty carbs like breads, sugars, pastas etc. Also, drinking will elevate your TGL's so don't over do it. You could start on a Fenofibrate like Tricor to lower your TGL's it works well. A statin will not really do that much.
Avatar n tn My MD & I have been trying for about 5 years now to raise my HDL (I have family history w/father dying of heart attack at 48) .Niaspan only raised it nominally, & now he wants to try Crestor.....Are statins good for raising HDL?...If one can keep their LDL down low enough say under 80, is HDL still significant?....Except for HDL, my other numbers are good...I'm non-smoker, & ideal weight, & active.....
Avatar n tn doctor has adviced me to take rosuvastatin and fenofibrate tablets.can you please tell me whether it helps to reduce weight?
Avatar m tn My guess (note guess) would be that when you laugh, your diaphram and/or lungs create a localized abrupt jarring or jostling for a brief moment that may cause the stray pathway to conduct creating your arrhythmia. I've had plenty of shock/vibration induced SVT's caused by landing flatfooted on a hard surface, or by perhaps sneezing or coughing.
Avatar n tn You can google the warnings and side effects of that one. I also take Tricor for my hyperlipidemia. But that is a fenofibrate, not a statin. Have you ever tried the grandfather of statins, Lipitor? Talk to your doctor and get the straight answers.
Avatar f tn Meds I am currently on are levothyroxine and fenofibrate. I was on buspirone but just quit that a few days ago. I did have this happen one other time a few weeks ago, but the second time after that everything was normal, so I wasn't worried. I believe at that time I was off the meds or just starting them.
Avatar f tn Hello~ As you probably know, a total IgE test result that is high means that you may have some kind of allergy, be it food, environmental or drug. But the results of a total IgE test don't show what you're allergic to or how serious your allergy may be. A specific IgE test result that is high means that you may be allergic to the allergen that was tested.
Avatar m tn Hi I was recently prescribed Fenofibrate to help reduce my high cholesterol levels etc... after a blood test. I have been doing some digging around regarding the drug and it says I should not be taking it if one has Hep B. I haven't found what the reasons are so I was wondering if someone could elaborate why one should not be taking it if one has Hep B. Thanks so much for your help.
Avatar m tn Exercise will help increase your HDL which should be over 40. Make sure to ask your doctor before starting any exercise. You can also as about a fenofibrate, they are very effective at lowering your TGLs.
Avatar m tn s are easy to lower, cut back on all sugars, breads, pastas and alcohol, that usually is enough. If not, you can try a Fenofibrate which is a very effective drug.
Avatar n tn I've never heard of high serum cholesterol having any affect on a surgical procedure or the outcome. Having said that, if he's not on a statin they could put him on one before the surgery, if for no other reason then for it's anti-inflammatory properties. Either way, he needs to get the number down. To lower TGL's, cut out all empty carbs like breads, pastas and sugar and if he is a drinker, he needs to stop as alcohol metabolizes as sugar and has a huge impact on TGL's.
Avatar f tn You could ask your doctor about a fenofibrate like Ticor, they are very effective on serum TGL's and have very few if any side effects. Good luck!
