Epogen for dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Epogen for dogs

neupogen

Avatar f tn I had absolutely no problems with epogen whatsoever. I took 40,000 two times a week and it got my HGB up to 10.5 or so and kept it there. You do not want to get higher than 12 that is where the black box warning comes in. But as for real side effects, I've never ever heard of anyone having any and I've been here for over six years!
1356964 tn?1302087435 Vet is suggesting epogen but I have read Epogen can have side effects and can quit working for an animal anywhere from 1-4 months of treatment. I am enquiring about an iron supplement to try first instead of injections, b/c her HCT has not follow under 20 as of yet . Vet said it was not at crucial stage as of yet so would an iron supplement be ok to try right now , of course with the ok of her vet ?
Avatar m tn Do you mean epogen when you say bone marrow stims, or did your doctor mean something else? I know some people get the riba dose lowered or take epogen for anemia or both but I don't know about adding boc. or tela. So far if the trial allowed epogen then fine but if the trial didn't allow it then the only option for really bad anemia is to drop the riba dose. Your anemia sounds like it was pretty bad so I guess have a plan in place in case it drops again. I think boc.
264121 tn?1313029456 Short of getting two different strengths of epo at the time, it was my only alternative. Since I will always have to be on epogen, its really helpful for me even now to be able to take 5k or 15k of epo instead of having to either take the full 20k or wasting the rest of the bottle, or storing it in a not so safe condition.
Avatar n tn My father was diagnosed with Hepatitis C about a year ago. He's been in and out of the hospital for transfusions and is now on all kinds of medication. He thinks that he shouldn't worry us with any bad news, so he really doesn't tell us much about his visits and whatnot. I know that he has also been diagnosed with cyroglobinemia and now something with his thyroid. The medication he is on is Epogen 40,000, Neupogen singleject 480 mg and also ribavirin. That is all I know of.
Avatar f tn Hi. Okay, thanks for the weight and fluid info. I think you are underdosing, particularly if you only get 100ml in within 24hrs. The recommendation would actually be 166ml in a 24hr period, which can be split into two 12hr doses if needed. It may be there's a reason why your vet has prescribed slightly less than the ideal dose, so talk to him first. Refusing to eat kd food is not uncommon. It is fairly unpalatable stuff, despite being the best thing other than home cooking.
Avatar f tn Hi Bo: Sorry to hear of your experience. Here is a quote from the Epogen web site (http://www.epogen.com/), "Common side effects of EPOGEN® include: Joint, muscle or bone pain". As you may know, Epogen is the same as Procrit -- just a different brand name for Epoetin Alfa. Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow. The largest bones are in the legs so I imagine the legs bones make the most RBCs. Probably best to inform your doctor of your joint, muscle, and bone pains.
Avatar f tn Hi everyone, I've followed a lot of conversations in the last year or so. My other half (Shirley) is on week 41 of treatment and feeling really unwell. Her latest bloods showed her white cells down to 9.2. She isn't getting a great service from the hospital but I am encouraging her to ask for Procrit which seems to be a big help.
Avatar f tn Virtually all patients will eventually require supplemental iron to increase or maintain transferrin saturation to levels which will adequately support erythropoiesis stimulated by EPOGEN®. All surgery patients being treated with EPOGEN® should receive adequate iron supplementation throughout the course of therapy in order to support erythropoiesis and avoid depletion of iron stores https://www.clevelandclinic.org/myeloma/Procrit_phaseII_less_frequent.htm "...
Avatar f tn Thanks for the reply Mike....that's what I thought! I don't know why my NP would tell me such a thing. I'm wondering if my HGB being at 9.8 is much of a problem...also how low can it get before someone would need some helper meds pronto! best wishes...
Avatar f tn How low did your hemoglobin go? Did you use procrit or epogen? Sorry for all the questions but I have kept a spreadsheet and am always curious about who treated with what and why one person succeeds and another fails.
Avatar f tn blood products and Epogen) regardless of the actual diagnosis, should we go ahead with the bone marrow biopsy.
Avatar m tn A main purpose of using Procrit or Epogen is to avoid a blood transfusion. It sounds like the Procrit is doing that for you (although that may be little consolation if you still feel really anemic). You are welcome to look at my Epogen tracking table that I posted as a photo on my profile for a data point on the effect Epogen/Procrit had on someone else.
264121 tn?1313029456 Then again, I still have to have weekly blood tests done for my epogen based anemia, so maybe the smarter but more annoying thing to do would just be to leave it in...
Avatar m tn Cliff, I wouldn't go for transfusion as a therapy unless it was truly needed. Side effects from epogen/procrit (eprex in Canada, just to make it more interesting!) are very minimal to none for most people, is my experience and my own experience. Neupogen sometimes brings with it some bone pain but is tolerable. I'll let other folks weigh in on that one, since I only got one neupogen shot in me before the whole thing stopped. Transfusion is usually when the hgb drops below 8.
179856 tn?1333547362 NEW YORK | Fri Sep 24, 2010 10:37am EDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - Amgen Inc and Johnson & Johnson are recalling their Epogen and Procrit anemia treatments because of the potential for barely visible glass flakes in vials containing the injectable medicines. The contaminated product has the potential to cause serious problems, including dangerous blood clots, Amgen said in a press release announcing the recall.
274158 tn?1276347187 Not towards me. Just other dogs......I thought he was showing aggression towards my daughter, but he was just trying to sniff her crotch! He is gross! I guess that's what dogs do! But, no agression towards us humans, just dogs, which isn't fun....
Avatar f tn t as knowledgable may balk because of FDA warnings a few years ago about increased risk for cardio problems associated with Epogen Alpha usage. But from what I've learned, the FDA warnings were targeted more at those using it to dope themselves up (such as bikers in races like Tour de France) and not for those taking it for medical purposes, such as a anemia rescue med for chemo patients. Whatever you do, try to avoid any cut in TX med dosage.
Avatar n tn DOGS CANNOT TAKE DECONGESTANTS!!!! They cannot metabolize them. If your dogs ears are that bad they are in need of antibiotic and antifungals. You can ask your vet to prescribe an antibiotic like cephalexin and an antifungal like fluconazole both which can be called into a walmart in your area and they are on the $4 generic list so it keeps cost down. As for itching they can have antihistamines WITHOUT DECONGESTANTS in them.
Avatar n tn As far as I'm aware, benadry is safe for quite a long time in dogs. The general doggy dosage is 1 mg/ per pound, so that's what your vet has prescribed - most people tend to go too low on the dosage. Using it for only the summer months should be no problem at all. I had a dog who needed it a good 8 months or more of every year and it never caused any trouble. Hope it works well for your Bostie!
Avatar m tn Are there painkillers for dogs that are safe? Tramadol caused my 11 year old chow chow Emily to have seizures after two days 4 pills and the Rimadyl side effects I just read here are equally as bad. Both were give to her by her vet of six years. If anyone has any ideas please contact me at ***@****. Thank you.
