Depo provera with antibiotics

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera with antibiotics

depo-provera

Avatar m tn I am getting my wisdom teeth out and the oral surgeon is giving me an IV of antibiotics to help with the healing after surgery. I am on the Depo Provera birth control shot and I had heard that antibiotics can effect birth control before. Is this true? Should I use a back-up form of birth control, and if so, for how long?

I still continue to feel my baby on a regular basis.
Avatar f tn Hi there, Antibiotics don't affect Depo-Provera birth control like they do with other forms of birth control. You can safely take the antibiotics as advised. This is merely an advice and not a substitute for clinical examination. For more queries and assistance visit a gynecologist.I sincerely hope it helps. Keep me posted. Best luck and regards!
Avatar n tn My girlfriend started using the depo-provera shot about a month ago. We abstained from sex for a week after the injection just to be safe. Two weeks after the injection we had to make a visit to her family practice doctor because we had a hunch that she had a bladder infection. We were right. The doctor prescribed her to take 250 mg of Ciprofloxacin twice daily and of course Phenazopyridine for the pain.
4069776 tn?1349521984 I am wondering if any one else is going through Depo Provera withdrawals? I was on it for 9 years and recently me and my husband decided to go off of it since we knew that this form of birth control can take up to 18 months if you are ttc. i was due for my shot in April and when the time came I went to my doctor to discuss getting off of it and the possible side effect or problems that I might encounter. He basically assured me that nothing will happen because I did so well while I was on it.
202436 tn?1326477933 I wasn't planning on using any birth control after I had Lily, we were just gonna go with natural family planning. Well at my doc appt today he suggested the depo provera shot may help with milk production since I'm having an issue with it due to anemia. I went ahead and got the shot becuase I figured it was worth trying to see if it WILL help AND with the anemia problems right now it's probably best that I elminate as much risk of pregnancy as possible for awhile.
Avatar n tn After being on depo provera for 1 year, I decided to discontinue use and switch to the pill. I decided to be single (and not sexually active) for a while, so I decided to wait until I got my period to start taking the pill. The only problem is that I STILL haven't had a period! It's been 6 or 7 months since I stopped getting the shots. I had normal periods while on the shot, and before I was on the shot, but once I stopped getting it my periods vanished...
Avatar n tn My husband and I are TTC and I took the Depo shot twice and stopped 11/04 and then started BCP till 8/05 and havent had a period since except with provera. I think the Depo is still in my system and is screwing everything up. I hope the provera works for you and best of luck with the clomid.
Avatar f tn Does antibiotics in gonorrhea treatment render the Depo Provera shot inaffective??? Ive heard that it affects pills but not the shot because it is already in your bloodstream. Is this true because im freaking out aboput getting pregnant!
Avatar n tn I have been on depo for 11 years. I would be due for my next shot on 9/27 but my Doctor has advised that I stop having it. She has been treating me for migraines and depression with Imitrex (when needed) and a daily dosage of Prozac of 10mg. The Imitrex thankfully, works, and the migraines have also been lessened by the Prozac.
Avatar f tn Antibiotics can make oral contraceptives less effective, but does not interact with the Depo-Provera injection.

Avatar f tn So I've been getting the Depo Provera bith control injection for over a year now. I havn't had a period or spotting for about 6 months. I have recently caught some weird infection that is like a cross between a cold and the flu but my doctor says its some bacterial infection. So he prescribed me Zithromax (arithromycin) which is an antibiotic. I have been taking it for 3 days and all of a sudden now I have spotting.
997371 tn?1249748671 Hi All, Im stuck here so thought i would turn here , sorry if it becomes long.
Avatar n tn What you heard about antibiotics making birth control less effective was a common belief among health care providers, however research has shown that it may not, in fact, be valid for any type of hormonal birth control, including Depo-Provera. With the exception of Rifampin-type antibiotics, there is no conclusive evidence that commonly-prescribed antibiotics make hormonal contraceptives less effective.
Avatar f tn Hi there, There have been few studies which have indicated that taking antibiotics with depo may affect the effectiveness of depo.If you are receiving Depo-Provera injections to prevent pregnancy, you should use a backup method of birth control while taking an antibiotic, just to be extra safe. Consult a gynecologist for assistance and clarification. I hope it helps. Best luck and regards!
Avatar m tn I started birth control at 15 for heavy periods. I switched to Depo Provera after about 6 years on the same pill. I was on Depo Provera for 1 year. I stopped in December 2015 due to irritating light spotting and mood changes. I began BC pills that allow for a period only once every 3 months. The spotting now only occurs after sex or self stimulation. I got my period in February, and it was extremely light (not at all like I remember).
Avatar n tn If you are pregnant your baby is in somewhat in danger by you being injected with the Depo Provera just a couple of months ago. I would make me an appointment at the local clinic or your ob/gyn. Explain to them what is going on. Obviously if your taking the shot you don't want to be pregnant. Your body has to be on a perfect hormonal balance for the egg to implant and survive.
1815045 tn?1316802444 Well I got with a new partner so I began taking the depo provera again and this time things are going smooth bled for the first 2 weeks and then the bleeding stopped. Well I started taking antibiotics for an infected tattoo and then i remembered that antibiotics can mess with birth control and it came back negative so I was no longer worried.
Avatar f tn I have been on Depo provera for 6 years and have not had a period the entire time. These symptoms aren't related to the surgery...they all were happening prior. What do you think it could be?
Avatar f tn It is driving me CRAZY. I have an appointment with my OB the end of the month, and I am considering having it removed. I also, have very sharp pains in my sides, thought it was ovulation but it is way to often. I already have 3 children (a set of twins, and a toddler) so I don't want more kids, but I'm not ready to shut my body down that if I change my mind I can't have anymore. I hope all of us find something to work, or this Mirena starts doing what it says it will do.
902536 tn?1326917850 I get pregnant pretty easily and was on depo, like the other ladies that was my only form of birth control, and I never got pregnant while on it and got pregnant just as I had before after I stopped it!! I gained a little bit of weight as well, you just have to be careful!!! Didn't know about it being less effective when on antibiotics, thanks martikadragoon!!!
Avatar n tn Acouple of days ago I was having ligament pulling down below my belly if I moved wrong or if I sneezed, like I did when I was pregnant with my son. I think my last period was at the beginning of Oct. Well i took a test this morning when my hubby got up for work at 5:30 and it came out negative, could it have been to soon??? Please let me know what you guys think.
Avatar n tn there is a posting on here about it or google Depo Provera horror stories.

Avatar f tn About 2 months back I developedverysevere bronchitis that put me on several antibiotics and an inhailer. Recently I have started depo provera and have experienced chills, which made me very paranoid, no night sweats. have tested negative for Gonorreah and chylamydia, and took a oraquick about 3 weeks ago that said negative, 3 weeks ago I also became sexually active with my partner, and he now has a cold (which I also might have from him) but in my head I'm convinced it's ars.
Avatar f tn But the scan showed some kinda growth in the womb which my gynae said looked like a sac with liquid inside, and she put me on antibiotics. Can hormonal imbalance or depo cause infections?
Avatar n tn If an infection is ruled out, a gynecologist can perform a laparoscopy or alternatively, attempt a trial of medical treatment with birth control pills, injection of Depo-provera or GnRH agonist for endometriosis. If the pain is resolved with medical treatment and infection was ruled out then it is most likely endometriosis and this is now an acceptable approach to treating endometriosis.
