Most of the side effects are not common. Change in the menstrual cycle is the most common side effect. You may experience irregular bleeding or spotting. After a year of use, about 50% of women will stop getting their periods. Their periods usually return when they discontinue the shots.

If you were my patient, i would advise you that the depo provera injection can be an excellent method of birth control. It is 99% effective and requires only that the patient have 4 injections per year. It is important to take a calcium supplement while using depo provera. Weight gain is probably the worst side effect.

I am a 21 year old female currently using Depo Provera as a means of birth-control. I am now in my second year of using it, and have noticed some side-effects that haven't gone away within the first year. Though I no longer have periods, at the end of the month I am much more easily aroused. Unfortunately, if I ever act on these heightened moments, whether through masturbation or a sexual partner, I excrete a bloody discharge shortly afterwards.
I would like to say that my doctor actually went to a seminar regarding depo and calcium loss and their is no substantial evidence that state this is true. I've been on depo for nearly 10 years straight with no calcium loss.
I actually quit depo because of that rumor, and I gravely regret that. After visiting my doctor, he found this seminar and went just to learn more about my inquiry of the long term effects.
I would suggest that you start doing ovulation predictors once you have a normal period and if you are not ovulating regularly, you could start a medication like Clomid to overcome the after effects of the depo.
Also, you should take lots of vit D and calcium--depo can cause thining of the bone, but that is reversible when you stop it.

If you were my patient, I would advise you that the depo provera injection is a very good and convenient form of birth control. Many patients use if for years and love it. Often there is some irregular bleeding initially when the shot is first begun, but after that most people don't have much more than infrequent spotting. If you get your shots on time the method is approximately 99% effective. I DO advise my patients to take a calcium supplement while on Depo.

The Depo Provera shot is birth control. IF you get your shot on time and never miss your appointments, it is about 99% effective. Be sure to take a calcium supplement daily--some of the gummy ones are great! It is pretty common for her bleeding to be irregular when a woman is on Depo Provera.
Usually it stops altogether after awhile. This is not a bad thing.

If you were using Depo-Provera it may take longer for your cycles to return to normal. Keep in mind that Depo-Provera is designed to be a long-lasting form of birth control. Quick question... which Depo are you on? There are two kinds, that I'm aware of: Depo Provera or Depo Lupron.
I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it.
The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
Were you told about all the side effects depo could have? Did you start taking a calcium supplement? I started Depo march 2003 and gained within the year 60lbs. I had saver chest pain, and went to get an ekg. I had severe head aches that came about suddenly. I had dizzy spell at random times and most important I was never told to take calcium until my last shot in may of last year. After taking that last shot I was given my first pamphlet about depo and it's side affects.
