Avatar n tn Then I was diagnosed with osteopenia, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and NOW depo-induced menopause. Are they all related to depo-provera use? I was taking it for 5 years. In what order do I treat this set of disorders? Why is my jaw the primary target? Will the bone loss stop, reverse? My endocrinologist said I should be taking hormone-replacement therapy, but that's what started me on this road to begin with! Help! I really don't want to have menopause twice. Any suggestions?
Avatar f tn Dear Elise I do not think that depoprovera will mask the symptoms of oavrian cancer. The main consequnece of depoprovera is not having a period. emedicine has a good summary. I have pasted it below best wishes Injectable Depomedroxyprogesterone Acetate DMPA is a suspension of microcrystals of a synthetic progestin that is injected intramuscularly. Avatar n tn Although I've never been on the depo for 10 years I was told by my doctor to only use the depo for 1-2 years the most, it does cause bone loss. I was on it before for 3 years and just went back on 2 months ago. It is the only birth control I like. I'm surprised you doctor didn't mention the effects the depo can have when on it for long period of time.
Avatar n tn One of the major side effects of depo provera is the irreversible loss of bone density with prolonged use. This may also lead to the higher risk of osteoporosis in women. " those word are right from the depo info page. But I mean what is done is done now you just need to become regular and a doctor for sure can help you with all of these questions as well.
Avatar n tn I heard they are showing in some cases that depo is causing bone loss if used for more then a year. Also the patch may be causing serious clots in young women. I use the nuva ring & wouldnt change it for anything!
Avatar n tn I was on depo for 1 year. (I'm 25 now, 23 at the depo time) I gained 50 pounds, had terrible mood swings, depression, bone loss, fatigue and some minor other problems. I suffer from knee/joint pain now because depo causes you to loose calcium in your bones. If you choose to go with it, make sure you start a calcuim supplament right away. I honestly would suggest researching into any drug before you commit to it. Some people I know have had really good luck with it.
432411 tn?1206475709 I also have learned that Depo causes bone density loss so maybe I am not menopausal. I don't mean to sound whiny and pitiful, but I can hardly remember the energetic, optimistic person that I used to be. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired! I have been searching the net and find lots of women with lots of side effects from taking Depo Provera, but I am trying to find other women who have experienced problems after QUITTING the injections.
Avatar f tn I was on depo for 3 yrs for same reason. Chronic ovarian cysts. The depo however made my cysts WORSE. I stopped and was able to conceive my 2nd child after 6 months of stopping which im grateful for. I did however carry my 2nd child with a huge ovarian chocolate cyst the size of a cantoloupe caused from depo. After having my son, i was diagnosed with severe endometriosis stage 5. I had severe fatigue like u also and complete loss of sex drive. I now control my cysts with natural remedies.
Avatar n tn After being on depo provera for 1 year, I decided to discontinue use and switch to the pill. I decided to be single (and not sexually active) for a while, so I decided to wait until I got my period to start taking the pill. The only problem is that I STILL haven't had a period! It's been 6 or 7 months since I stopped getting the shots. I had normal periods while on the shot, and before I was on the shot, but once I stopped getting it my periods vanished...
Avatar n tn I have been on depo for 11 years. I would be due for my next shot on 9/27 but my Doctor has advised that I stop having it. She has been treating me for migraines and depression with Imitrex (when needed) and a daily dosage of Prozac of 10mg. The Imitrex thankfully, works, and the migraines have also been lessened by the Prozac.
Avatar f tn I wonder what the difference between the two depo shots are and I wonder why my gyno recommended the other depo shot if the depo-subq provera 104 shot is specific for endo ?
Avatar f tn I've just turned 18 and I've been using the depo shot for at least 7 months because the pill was making me sick. When I asked my Nurse about depo she just told me about the positives which left me very much in the dark about this contraception.Since starting my shots I have gained 14LBS in just SEVEN months!!I have gone back to the nurse since and explained that my diet and exercise hasn't changed but I'm gaining weight, she wasn't exactly sympathic and insisted I eat less!
Avatar n tn It can take 12-18 months for Depo Provera to be completely out of your system. But probably much less since you only had once shot.
Avatar f tn Ever since, I've looked into Depo and have seen people get loss of fertility, cancer, bone marrow loss, and several other big long term issues which only raised my concerns more. I want to switch my birth control method. What i like about depo: 3 months between, I have a terrible memory. No period. High effectiveness, and after the shot, no worries So how does an implant birth control such as implanon compare?
Avatar f tn I've been using Depo-provera for 1 year and 4 months, and have been aware of not staying on it for longer than 2 years due to the risk of bone loss that comes with longterm use. I've looked into Implanon but fear that because it hasn't been out for too long, the side affects have yet to be truely determined and bone loss may also be found with the use of Implanon.
Avatar n tn Hello I am 19 and considering getting a shot of depo provera soon, my boyfriend and I decided that if we want to have sex we need extra protection since I am allergic to latex and nonlatex condoms have been sketchy in the past... I am wondering what side effects are expected from Depo. I have read that many women gain a significant amount of weight, and I am extremely health-conscious and exercise frequently, and I don't want this to happen to me.
Avatar n tn I would also consider using a different form of birth control next time. It looks like it might be linked to bone loss if used for more then a year. I think everyone is different when conceiving after depo! Good Luck & Baby Dust!
Avatar n tn If you don't mind a little spotting and gaining some weight for awhile try it, but make sure to take calcium tablets because and can cause bone loss. I think I wouldn't have gained that much weight if I woud haveexercised. if you exercise you wil probably only gain a lil. I don't have to remember to take a pill every day so it works.
Avatar n tn The only thing I wish I had been told from the start was that the depo depletes calcium levels. I have a lot of joint/bone issues now, but I started taking calcium supplements as soon as I was enlightened of the inevitable depletion. I only stayed on the shot for a year though. The reason being that I have heard that if a woman stays on BC for too long it will make conception very difficult or even impossible. I still want to have children someday.
Avatar n tn I used depo provera injections for two and a half years. It's been over a year since my last injection. within the first six months after stopping the shot I gained 40lbs without a change in my diet and excercise.I was told this was unusual to gain after stopping the shot and that i may never lose the weight. Is this true? or is the only way to go back on the shot because while i was on the shot i actually lost weight.but if that's the answer won't i be trapped on the shot forever?
Avatar n tn does taking depo provera for 3 months make you infertile?
Avatar n tn maybe you should get checked out anyway, if your in a lot of pain don't take the chance. Avatar n tn The test where they put a needle into your muscle and listen to it shows that there is some abnormality, but the shock test shows there is nothing blocking the electricity. I have been on depo provera for 3 years. I was looking at the side effects to the depo shot online a few days ago - one of the side effects is paralysis. However, I cannot find any stories on how this paralysis is manifested. Does the depo shot cause nerve damage, and how does it go about it?
Avatar n tn I've been taking 500mg metformin myself and I have not experienced any weight loss. I am actually taking it for diabetes treatment. But it has not helped with my weight loss.
363110 tn?1340924019 Hey ladies, I thought I'd put this warning out there since many women DO NOT KNOW about a certain risk with Depo. Depo Provera has been given a Black Box warning label from the FDA because it can cause bone density lost. The makers reccomend that after 3 years of being on depo you begin getting your Bone Density checked 1x a year. Because bone density loss can lead to osteoporosis or brittle bones. Some doctors reccomend Depo for no longer than 3 years because of this risk.
Avatar f tn I have had a yeast infection nonstop for about 3 years in conjunction with periodic urinary tract infections, I also have had biweekly to bimonthly chronic throat infections both on and around the tonsils (white stones) and major swelling causing pressure on my ears to the point of frequent ear aches for eight months along with forever surfacing blister type fluid filled lesions to join the other two types of infections.
Avatar f tn Hi there =) By Provera I assume you mean Depo provera? Shot form? If so - I had this for 3 years age 15-18. It worked well for 1 year and the other 2 were iffy (but thats another story on my stupid OBGYN at the time!). Why arn't I on this now? Besides it no longer helping me, I began to bleed through it even when the dosages were put up and done shorter between shots, I also developed osteoporosis in my hips. So if it works great!
Avatar f tn You need to speak to your doctor about the side effects of the Depo Provera such as bone loss, weight gain and acne. I didnt think I had this problem until I broke my fingers the other day. The Depo Provera shot is only recommended for use for 2 to 3 years, but no longer than that. Bleeding could be caused by irritation, could be a ruptured cyst on the ovary or cervix, or you could just have what they call "breakthrough bleeding".
