Depo provera and irregular bleeding

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and irregular bleeding

Avatar n tn You can get irregular bleeding when you first start the Depo-Provera, but if you have never had this heavy bleeding before you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. They can check some hormones and examine you to make sure everything is OK.
Avatar n tn It is not abnormal to have some irregular bleeding when you start depo (and I think the cramping is fairly common as well). But you should let the doctor know that you are having these symptoms just to be sure. Good luck.
Avatar m tn I just went to the GYN and got my annual pelvic exam and my first shot of depo and so far everything has been okay. However, once I didn't get my period I started to worry and I took a pregnancy test just in case and it did come out negative. But I'm still freaking out since I am only 18 and really do not want to be pregnant. So is it normal to be late for your period after getting the shot? or should I take another test? Thanks.
Avatar f tn hi i got the depo injection last august but never got another one again becuse of the bleeding and pain i experienced. i still have not gotten my period back. im not pregnant but we are trying im really worried about it and have heard that i could have got POS (poly Ova Syndrome) but thats just word of mouth that you can get this from the needle.
Avatar n tn I´ve been taking depo provera every 11 weeks for the last 10 years. I have not had a period for the entire time. I am going to be 30 years old in October and have decided that I want to have a baby with my boyfriend. Will my level of fertility or chances of pregnancy be affected because of the prolonged use of this drug. I hear 3 years is considered prolonged- I´ve been on it for 10.
Avatar n tn For SURE, a blood test will tell you. The depo shot will cause irregular bleeding and lack of menses, weight gain, bloating, etc.
Avatar n tn It can sometimes take months and months to get a cycle back after stopping Depo. You may have irregular bleeding and spotting for quite a while, or nothing at all for quite a while. If you are sexually active and not using any birth control now, take a HPT about every 2-3 weeks until you either get your period back, or get a positive. That's about all you can do at this point. If this keeps up, you should ask your doctor what to do. Are you wanting to be pregnant? I'm assuming so.
Avatar f tn I have been on Depo-provera for nearly two months now, and have been on several other birth controls to try and regulate my period. None of the pills ever worked, I continued to bleed irregularly with heavy blood flow, and periods lasting up to 8 weeks. My doctor and I tried LUPRON to stop my periods, and it worked well for about six months. Due to insurance refusing to pay, I switched to Depo-Provera. I started bleeding two weeks ago, with all the sypmtoms of a regular period.
Avatar n tn The docotors believe I may have a progesterone problem due to Depo Provera. I was on Depo for 6 years and went off the shot in Sept. Does anyone know if the effects of this shot can linger and cause lower progesterone levels?
Avatar n tn I was on Depo Provera for about 8 years when my husband and I decided to try for another baby. I received my last injection in September 2006. I was pregnant by March 07 but miscarried at 5 weeks. We waited until December to try again and just miscarried that one at 9 weeks. After having 2 healthy children with no pregnancy complications, I am led to believe that this is an effect of the Depo injections.
Avatar n tn but after i finished the pills a week later i started bleeding again and has been bleeding ever since..what should i do? because im due for another depo shot in 2\2010 should i get it or just dnt take anything and let my body regulate?
Avatar f tn Hello and hope you are doing well. It is common to have irregular bleeding and/or prolonged bleeding with depo use. This side effect is usually common during the first 3 months of use. If the bleeding is heavy and prolonged it can result in anemia and weakness. It is best to discuss with your doctor about this irregular or prolonged bleeding on Depo Provera .A complete medical evaluation may be necessary if the symptoms are severe and persistent. I sincerely hope it helps. Take care and regards!

413769 tn?1231390824 For those of you who use this method what have been your experiences? I've read online about side effects including irregular bleeding and weight gain, but I've also read the injections can help regulate menstruation and even stop it all together. I'd appreciate any feedback you can offer.
Avatar n tn i stopped taking the depo provera shot in april..i bled 2 months before my shot was due (april 30) then i bled for another month then i stopped bleeding for 3 days, starting bleeding again for 2 weeks, then stopped for about a week now i started lightly bleeding again today...with lower abdominal pains (the doctors tell me that pain is from ovulation) is this the after effects of the birth control shot? or could it be something else?
Avatar f tn Im taking the provera pills. I take BC to help regulate my periods for the next two months but I haven't stopped this period yet.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am a 21 year old female and i was on the Depo Provera shot from september 2009 and got my last shot in june of 2011. I was due for another shot in september 2011, but due to myself wanting to lose weight, i got off of it. I had then got my period October 28th, 2011 and that lasted until around Nov 7th. I had then gotten my period for a second time around the 13 or 14th of November, then AGAIN for a 3rd time on November 27th and that stayed until December 4th.
988051 tn?1249023942 Its very common to have irregular bleeding or spotting while on Depo. Or not to have any period at all. If you do not have a period, the uterine lining is not shed. However, Depo Provera does not thicken the uterine lining. It works by inhibiting the hormones that stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. It can thicken the cervical mucus and making it harder for sperm to penetrate, too.
Avatar n tn I have heard a good deal about irregular bleeding after coming off the depo. If you are bleeding for more than 2 weeks go see the doc. He/She can get your period to stop. They may also help you with regulation until your body is back to normal again.
Avatar f tn Im on the birth control depo shot i have irregular periods i had sex and used a condom wen i notice the condm riped and he came in me could i still get pregnant?
Avatar n tn I am in a group where all the women are trying to conceive after the depo provera. Many have been trying to conceive for years, and no luck. And it seems like those who do conceive have miscarriages soon after. Its like 80% of the women who get pg have a miscarriage. Is this linked to the depo? Age? Im 22 and am trying to conceive #2. (my son is 6 now) I am so scared that it might happen to me.
Avatar f tn Goodman, I wonder if you have any information about how Depo-Provera can change the symptoms of ovarian cancer v. ovarian cysts? I have been on Depo-Provera for two years and it seems that it would mask all the symptoms that are most likely to identify a cyst vs. a tumour. Do you know anything about how the two would look different in the presence of Depo-Provera?
Avatar n tn I was given a shot of depo-provera yesterday...and when I asked about side affects all I was told was nausea, headache, and dizziness. After reading quite a few articles online, it seems there are a lot more serious side affects than I was led to believe. I've been having lots of chest pain and shortness of breath, but the doctor doesn't seem to think it's related to the shot.
432411 tn?1206475709 I took depo provera for about 6 years, starting in 2000. Just over three months after I stopped taking the shots I developed a nodule in my neck which was eventually diagnosed as thyroid cancer. I have absolutely no history of thyroid problems of any kind in family and I had had no problems before the depo.
Avatar m tn Her periods always come on time and always lasts 5 days, first 2 days heavy bleeding, 3 days light bleeding. She never has PMS and almost never suffer from menstrual cramps. So her current period of 7 days is out of the norm .
Avatar f tn Four days after a period is too soon for implantation so I don't think I'm pregnant and not sure if I'm ovulating yet after the depo. Is it just irregular period due to depo?periminopause?? I'm 25 and my one yr old still nurses at night if that matters... should i get a check up?
Avatar n tn i must of had my period solid for about a month and even after that i would just start bleeding randomly. And if i wasn't bleeding i usually had this brown discharge stuff. nasty. So i decided not to get my second depo shot. That was about two months ago and to this day I still have brown discharge and really out of wack periods. All i can tell you is DO NOT get the depo shot!
