Avatar n tn Breakthrough bleeding and really long periods are common side effects on depo provera. It's actually one of the reasons most women stop using it. Unfortunately, because it's an injectible birth control method, there isn't much you or your doctor can do if you are having unpleasant side effects. You just have to wait for the 3 months to be over and your body to either adjust to it, or to see if it just won't work for you.

1394877 tn?1280265360 Welcome to the side effects of Depo Provera! :) It takes A LOT of time to get used to the drug and yes, all that you're experiencing with the mood swings, lower abdominal pains, etc. are just normal side effects. Damaging to someone is a possibility. Did the doctor explain to you the side effects and what happens to your bones the longer you're on the stuff? I was on it for 3 years and had... somewhat problems at the end.
Avatar n tn Hi, I am 17, I am on Depo Provera and am having side effects such as constant bleeding (1 month and half) and the common mood changes. I was told that if I take estrogen I can minimize the bleeding or even stop it...However I was informed by a nurse that due to breast cancer running in my family if I starting to take an estrogen pill so early it can potentially make my risk of breast cancer even higher for the future.

It’s been 3 days since it happened. Today I started getting bad cramps in my stomach...should I get plan b....
Avatar f tn Hello, The symptoms that you are having look like due to side effects of the depo shots which should get better in a few days. If it persists even after three months or the spotting is accompanied with heavy bleeding then get an evaluation done from a gynecologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.

Avatar f tn Can the depo-provera shot be given in between periods and still be affective? What would the effects of this be?
Avatar f tn Seeing how you said the 3 month injection you mean like Depo Provera. I was on Depo for 3 years and it seems to sound as though you're dealing with the issues of the side effects of the birth control. It happens and really sometimes you get them sooner or in your case later.
Avatar n tn What are the side effects of depo provera?
Avatar f tn Most likely, these are side effects from the Depo, but you might want to contact your health care provider and have a check up just to be sure. Also, even when using Depo or the pill...I highly recommend condoms. Condoms not only offer additional protection against pregnancy, they also help prevent sexually transmitted infections. You or your partner can have an infection and not know it...and unknowingly pass it on.
Avatar f tn It is important to take a calcium supplement while using depo provera. Weight gain is probably the worst side effect. Hope this helps!

Avatar n tn The Depo is one of the most effective birth controls on the market, but has some side effects that put women off. (I'd never personally use it. I went with a non-hormonal IUD) Side effects you might get are odd spotting, heavy/lighter than normal periods and over time no period, weight gain (this is a real common one) headaches, breast tenderness and a few other I can't think of. You can google for a proper list of side effects and the number of women who experience them.

Avatar f tn In October, I got my first shot of Depo-Provera. I know several women on depo and they have all told me they have had the same experience: no periods, no spotting and no other side effects whatsoever. My experience has been horrible. For the first 6 weeks, all was well, no bleeding/spotting and no other symptoms. A few weeks ago, however, I began spotting. Every day it became heavier.
Avatar f tn I think I can help you out. So depo provera, the shot, is made up of the hormone Progesterone. Progesterone is used by the woman's body to build up our endometerium, the lining of the uterus which is shed off during one's period. By taking depo provera you are consistently having the hormone progesterone released in your body for 3 months. Increasing the intake of this hormone in your body can cause prolonged periods and heavy spotting.
