I have been coughing up black mucus for about 1 year or so now. I smoke cigarettes and I have had a puncutered lung about 20 years ago. Heart disease, and chronic bronchitis are on my mothers side of the family. and my mother has emphezema. I breath fine and feel fine. If I stop smoking will this clear up?

One time my GP came home to me because, i was coughing up blood stained frothy mucus and my lungs were itching and i was very breathless, i had swollen ankles and felt terribly bloatedand my GP said i had fluid on the lungs, he treated me with directics. For the past 4 years I have been coughing up clear jelly like Mucus Balls. I have been a smoker for 8 years, and I have Asthma. I wake up in the morning and in the middle of the night coughing up a lot of the little mucus balls. It happens a little bit through out the day. Sometimes they are balls and sometimes they are like a hair, but made of mucus. I am very scared and do not have health insurance. I am 25, and thought I was pretty healthy. Please someone, HELP!

What started as a sore throat has affected my lungs, difficulty breathing,(mainly exhaling)(raspy sound in throat when exhaling) coughing up rust, white and yellow mucus. I start to feel better, and then bam it gets worse. now it feels like there is gross mucus trapped in my lungs, & i dont know how to get it out. Sometimes after i cough, the phlegm is so bad it makes me sick to my stomach. I dont want to go to Dr. to be told its just a virus.

This started like a head cold and still behaves like it with lots of mucus from my sinuses, balance problems and ear pressure. My symptoms started a month ago when i had a fever, throat pain, coughing up yellow mucus and a runny nose, so i decided to visit my doctor which prescribed Klacid 500 mg (Clarithromycin), which i took and after a few days the runny nose stopped and my throat no longer hurt, however, i was still caughing, which a follow-up to my doctor gave me Valdocef (Cefadroxil) which i also took but the cough remained.

I have asthma and get a burning in my lungs from coughing a lot. I would just leave it for a few more days, unless you get worse or start coughing up grey mucus or hear a cracking noise when you breath (those are signs of pneumonia).

I can deal with the wheezing, but 3 times now over the past 2 months I’ve started coughing hard and pulled up a thick, brown worm/slug like hard mucus that’s about 1.5 inches long and fairly thick. This thins mucus. If the mucus is from your lungs it will thin that too. B5 also reduces inflammation. Neither treatment will do any harm and they may help identify the problem. You might also want to take 500 mg of vitamin C to reduce inflammation.

As in your muscles are too weak to realy clear your lungs so you keep having this mucus in your lungs that you can clear up. I would talk to your doctor to see if this is the case, and then maybe a solution could be found.

Most doctors today will not even prescribe cough suppressants anymore because it hinders healing. The lungs are trying to heal by coughing your ridding the lungs of unwanted toxins and such. Are you coughing up any mucus and is it clear or yellowish green in color? I would call your doctor if it is not clear because you may need antibiotics. I would also stop the cough medication so the lungs can rid themselves of any mucus that's causing infection.

Is it in your lungs or sinuses? Has your doctor done a chest or sinus x-ray? If your illness is viral, no antibiotics will work. Hope you feel better soon.

I have late onset asthma dx'd at age 57 now 62. I also developed severe sinusitis with copius amounts of mucus around the same time frame. Hi my 5 yr old has had a problem with gagging( coughing) up mucus since birth. He tested neg. for allergies so the Dr's diagnosed him with asthma. The problem is now new doctor seems to think it is a sensory issue due to him having autism.
