Chantix for alcohol addiction

Common Questions and Answers about Chantix for alcohol addiction

chantix

Avatar f tn Naltrexone blocks opiate receptors, and it is thought that alcohol causes release of endorphins and that is one reason for the addictive nature of alcohol. Curiously, naltrexone reduces cravings for alcohol, but does NOT reduce cravings for opiates! Chantix causes dopamine release in the brain; the main problem with the medication is that it can cause depression and even psychosis-- all temporarily, until the med is stopped.
Avatar m tn I quit smoking using Chantix as well. I am only 1 month non-smoking. I only took Chantix for 9 days as on the 9th day I found out i was pregnant. So I was non smoking and pregnant, to only two weeks later miscarry. I am not too sure if its from the hormones, or from the symptoms of not smoking, but i was extremely irritable, it was almost to the point that everything i that came out of my mouth was snappy. I developed insomnia right from the get go from Chantix.
Avatar f tn I was taking Chantix for about a week and a half when I had to quit it because I was experiencing depression which was getting worse by the day. This is going on the 2nd full day of no Chantix but I am still feeling depressed. I want to know how long does it stay in your system for. I woke up today and felt close to normal and then it came back again.
Avatar m tn I have recently been approved by VA for a chantix prescription, and expect to start the cessation program within days. I've been told that a recent medical study indicates that a male of my age, 66, incurs decreased longevity by quitting smoking after 50 years addiction. can someone direct me to such a study, or advise if I've been misled?
Avatar f tn My friend just quit taking Chantix due to the inability to handle the side effects. She has noticed that since quitting the Chantix alcohol has effected her differently. While on the Chantix she noticed the effects of alcohol tokk in quite quickly where now she seems to have a tolerance that was not there before. Is it possible that theh Chantix caused her intolerabilty to alcohol?
286124 tn?1214938528 Good question though. Do look into Chantix and Alcohol as a starting place...what you would do if you wanted to try it for alcohol or aome other substance is tell the Dr. you also smoke and want toi quit that too. That way he has a basis for writing the script....
657423 tn?1227280657 I can go from 8 am til 1pm without a cig. then after the 1st i just keep smoking them all day long. I have only been a hardcore smoker for about 10-11 months. But I have been smoking off and on for the past 4 yrs when i use to do drugs. So my question is will it be any easier for me to quit since i haven't smoked for long? Also should i get chantix from my doc.?
Avatar n tn Been on Chantix for 1 month...a week and a half ago I noticed my breast were tender...felt like i was 14 again...they are swelling...a whole cup size now...

444932 tn?1273980797 my nose was itchy for weeks but I hung in got through it and the yukky stomach I also had from time to time. Other than that, I was amazed at how quickly Chantix made me crave less and less. For me, it was that "miracle" drug but there are many who would dispute that. All I know is that it worked for me and I am very grateful! I smoked for nearly 40 years and I thought I would die smoking.
Avatar n tn one can be addicted to caffeine, of course and there are people addicted to bad relationships too...i would call addiction to each habit with an autodestructive pattern, that means to me everything that is dangerous or wrong for our health in whatever the way... ( mental/emotional/physical health ). when does drinking or smoking become a habit ? well, when it's indeed a habit.

Avatar n tn That can't be a good thing......You really need to speak to your doctor about it and see if there is an alternate solution. He might be a good candidate for Chantix. Even though he isn't smoking any longer he is still getting nicotine in his system. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Thank you for responding, I have been searching through forums and trying to get information for a week now. I am a recovering alcoholic/addict and smoking is the last addiction left! So I am ready to stop. I am going to talk to my doctor about both pills, again, thank you for responding. I do not know anyone who has quit; so its hard to find advice.
Avatar f tn I used Chantix for my quit but had no ill side effects. Hindsight, I probably wouldn't use it again because of all the negativity so what I would suggest is if you have already gone 2 days without a smoke, you might want to consider stopping the Chantix. You are still going to have a physical withdrawal regardless of how long you use the pill though I don't know to what degree, all I can say is that I had a rough go of it.
1096641 tn?1271707225 I'm happy to hear that you put them down again, and yes, the craving can get to you, and you cannot beat yourself up but you might want to finish your chantix and then buy another and wean off them. I used Chantix and while taking them for a period of time I found that they really helped...no craves at all, I also realized that once I stopped, I had to deal with w/d, physical and emotional and that's when whyquit really helped me.
Avatar f tn Good morning and congrats on your anniversary as a non-smoker! We have had some recent talk about the gum and maybe you can glean some info from it. Try following this thread: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Smoking-Addiction/Effects-of-Long-Term-Nicorette-Use/show/730769?post_id=post_4517392 I quit with Chantix so I am not personally knowledgeable, but I do know some "gum" users who have been chewing for many years and are having a difficult time trying to stop.
1134609 tn?1269272200 This was determined when I was put only Zoloft while depressed from recovering from alcohol addiction. Then I was put on a very low dose of Lithium and very low dose of Wellubutrin and it worked great for a few years. Then I got the Lith 6 years ago and had no problems . Then I got off the Wellbutrin 4 years ago due to some panic attacks. My psychiatrist said that I could stop the meds since she termed my issues " situational" and I had no cycling and no relapses with the drink.
Avatar f tn thank you all for your help! I agree with you when you say 1 addiction at a time but I'm just so excited about not doing coke i just want to make my whole body as healthy can as I can, and i'm not quitting cigs c/t. I'm just cutting down as much as possible. 5 cigs today, pretty good for a pack a day smoker, right? I'm going to see my doctor next week so maybe I'll ask him about chantix thank you for that valuable bit of info desperatetostop.
1609058 tn?1298089127 I've had an awful experience that I must share and find out if anyone else has gone through it. I currently take Lexapro 10mg, a mild antidepressant, and it's wonderful for me. A little over a month ago, I requested a prescription for Chantix to quit smoking. Even though I'd heard lots of negative things about the side effects, I thought it was worth trying. After 4 weeks of taking it, I did notice that my mood was being affected, so I decided to stop taking it.
950277 tn?1247274551 My mother in law went on the chantix program. She was a smoker of over 50 years. She has been on Chantix for 3months. She actually lights her smoke but does not smoke it. She does this twice daily. She really has quit. It is amazing!
