Avatar f tn Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn. Problems with your jaw and the muscles in your face that control it are known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). But you may hear it wrongly called TMJ, after the joint. Causes of TMD We don’t know what causes TMD.
977806 tn?1249067346 Teeth grinding not only wears down the surface of the tooth.but it also causes enamel to wear on the sides of the tooth by pressure,my dentist was explaining this to me and i found it very interesting,BTW...my headaches seem to be dissipating...
Avatar m tn Well, without a detailed clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of your symptoms. The pain could be related to causes located in the teeth/ gums/ ear/ throat, underlying bones, overlying soft tissue structures such as infections/ inflammations, neuro-muscular causes, injuries/ trauma, growth/ masses etc.

Avatar m tn After his telling me that he asked me what I thought the solution was and I stated to have all of my teeth extracted and to get dentures. I had all of my teeth extracted in the middle of April and saw my dentist last month. He stated my gums were not totally healed but took the first of several more impressions of my gums to keep track of the healing process.
Avatar n tn About a year ago I started clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth in my sleep. I realized I was doing this after waking up a few mornings with horrible headaches and pain in my jaw. My dentist fitted me for a mouth guard (which I wear every night) and then things seemed a little better. Well for the past 2 months I feel like I am doing it more than ever. I wear the mouth guard every night but I am waking up with jaw pain. Is there anything else I can do or take to alleviate this?
Avatar f tn My jaw bacame sore in the beginning I thought I was having a bad toothache and had my dr call in an antibiotic but it didn't help. I guess its because our joints are loosening up and that causes the pain. Even in our jaws. Mine didn't last long maybe a week in a half.
Avatar m tn I forgot to mention this--crooked teeth don't cause TMJ problems. Statements like that come out of a lack of understanding the causes of TMJ disorders. We actually can't always know, but it is my impression as an orthodontist also is that the same things that cause crooked teeth (muscle forces and cranial/postural imbalances) also cause the internal derangements of the TMJ (disc displacements).
Avatar n tn I have had pain in the left joint of my jaw for years now. As far as I can remember I have not been knocked in that area. The area of pain can stretch from the lower jaw area right up to my ear and can even give me neck pain. It causes pain when I open my mouth wide and always feels like the bones are 'clicking' and 'clunking' out of place. I have had phisio on the joint but that is only a stretch of the muscle and the pan is always present.
Avatar f tn It could be TMJ - sometimes the jaw gets "out of place" and causes pain when we chew - When I sleep too hard, I get pain in my jaw and face as my jaw gets out.... the dentist can put it back in place.
Avatar m tn Your pain may be due to a combination of factors, such as genetics, arthritis or jaw injury. Some people who have jaw pain also tend to clench or grind their teeth, although many people habitually clench or grind their teeth and never develop TMJ disorders. In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders is temporary and can be relieved with self-managed care or nonsurgical treatments.
Avatar f tn My jaw has popped for several years now which has not bothered me to much other than the annoyance of it, However several months ago I started having pain in my teeth and jaw. I saw two dentist who took X-rays and explained it could be from grinding my teeth at night. They assured me that everything else looked fine. Since then, the pain has gotten worse and comes more often. I have been taking pain relievers everyday now, and sometimes more than once a day. The pain now also goes into my ear.
451674 tn?1205658922 The problem I have is the first bite of food I put in my mouth causes SEVERE pain in joints of my jaw. This pain is excrutiating at first, I have to grab my jaws just to be able to handle the pain. It doesnt last long, maybe about 10 seconds. The dentist told me it was caused from my jaw being out of line, having so many missing back teeth. She said I could have surgery, where they would break my jaw and realign it. Whatever!! No one is breaking my jaw. I just live with it unfortunatly.
Avatar f tn Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a neuropathic disorder of the trigeminal nerve that causes episodes of intense pain in the eyes, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, and jaw. The condition can bring about stabbing, electric shock-like pain from just a light wind or a finger's glance of the cheek.TN usually develops after the age of 40.
Avatar f tn I've been feeling the exact same way
Avatar n tn good alignment is important for all the reasons you mentioned. poor alignment gets worse ove time and causes decay, gum disease, loosening of teeth, chewing problems, TMJ dysfunction, decay (inbetwween teeth that are not contacting each other properly and where you can't brush), sthetic problems etc etc. IF you have the means, and a good orthodontist tells you it would be a benefit, then you should do it.
Avatar n tn When it layed down for bed the pain seemed to get more intense through-out the bottom jaw and all teeth in the bottom of my mouth.Ive rubbed bonjela all over the area several times. It has made my gums numb but my teeth are still aching alot.I cant bite down on them, any kind of mouth movement causes great pain. i have no decay visible and i cant feel anything out of the ordinary.
Avatar n tn what causes me to have pain on the right side of my jaw (upper) and when i get this pain i also get headache and pain behind my right eye. This has been going on for the last few months.
Avatar m tn My main concern is jaw pain. After short periods of running I am experiencing pain, specifically around my joints. After doing some light background research I saw this this could be linked to heart disease. Before anyone responds a few points should be made. -I was tested extensively for heart issues when I was 4 due to a benign heart murmur. - I have scoliosis which causes one of my legs to be approx .25 inches shorter than the other. I require the use of a lift in one shoe.
Avatar n tn This website has the best explanation that I have seen. http://www.aafp.org/afp/20050815/623.html Yes, your tests indicate you are hyperthyroid. Now you and your Drs. need to determine the cause. When I had a hot nodule, my biggest complaint was pain in my tooth, jaw and ear. I don't think that dental work caused the thyroid condition. I do believe that my enlarged thyroid put pressure on a nerve causing the pain. It seems a strange coincidence about the crown though.
Avatar n tn You know I may also be TMJ, that's what I have, the worst case. I get pain in my jaw, headaches, sometimes throat pain, and ear pain, and back pain, you'll know if you have it by pressure on your side jaw(both sides) Just my oppinion.
Avatar n tn Since then, I have been having alot of pains in both sides of my jaw (in front of the ears and just under the ears). I also have alot of pain and tightness in the jaws in the mornings and it takes a while for me to be able to fully open my mouth. There is pain with chewing, yawning, talking and side movements of my jaw.
Avatar f tn It causes me a lot of pain at times and seems to now be very sensitive to cold weather. I also notice that when opening and closing my mouth it seems like the alignment of my jaw is wrong, the right side appears to pop out when my mouth opens and the left does not. I never had any jaw problems before having my wisdom tooth out, my jaw had never even locked before. It is very frustrating and I just want to know what could have happened and how I might make it better?!?!
