Common Questions and Answers about Carbohydrate table sugar

Avatar n tn Does your urine smell unusual? You should be aware that substitute sweeteners increase the appetite in some people. It is not clear which hormones are involved, but apparently trying to "fool" the brain with artificial sweeteners tends to increase carbohydrate cravings. Splenda (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose) is a sweetener I use. It costs on an average of $6.50 US dollars per 32 oz (907 grams) where Zsweet costs $19.95 US dollars per 1.5 lbs (680 grams).
Avatar f tn Sucralose is derived from sugar, however, it is not perceived by the body as sugar or as a carbohydrate. In specific studies in people with diabetes, sucralose had no effect on blood sugar levels, carbohydrate metabolism, or the secretion of insulin. Sucralose is not broken down in the body for energy and is excreted unchanged. As with most low calorie sweeteners, SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener also contains common food ingredients, in addition to the sweetener sucralose.
Avatar f tn If a food that says it is sugar free has "carbohydrate" listed, then it can elevate your blood sugar.......this I found researching. Hope this helps.
Avatar m tn 6 tsp white sugar, 1/2 tsp table salt, 1/2 tsp salt substitute (for the potassium it contains), 1/2 tsp baking soda and 1 litre of water. It tastes better if you add some lemon juice to it. If the taste is too strong, which sometimes it is for me, I just dilute it. Either way, I'm getting fluids and electrolytes, it just takes a little longer to feel better if I dilute it. I also take a calcium/magnesium supplement.
Avatar f tn While it is normal to have a rise in blood sugar level after a meal, excessive rise in blood sugar levels could indicate inappropriate dosage/ timing of injecting the insulin or excessive or inappropriate proportion of carbohydrate in diet. You could start by slightly lowering the carbohydrate and increasing the protein portion of diet. If this does not seem to help, I would suggest consulting your treating endocrinologist for adjustment in dosage/ timing of the insulin. Hope this is helpful.
Avatar m tn Due to stomach problems, I have decided to try a Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Has anyone experienced relief on this diet? So basically, this is what I got from it- fresh vegtables, fresh fruits, lean meats, most nuts, NO LACTOSE, NO SUGAR (except in fruits and honey), and NO STARCHES. Is this about right? Also, what is the policy on yogurt and coconut milk?
Avatar m tn BUT I CHECK MY BLOOD SUGAR, BEFORE MY BREAKFAST RESULT IS 5.44mmol/L, 98mg/dl, AFTER BREAKFAST 9.38mmol/L, 169mg/dl. Can u say, what is it?
Avatar f tn Low blood sugar and low serotonin levels can both cause food cravings. Serotonin is a hormone in the brain that helps make you feel good. When it is low, sadness or depression may result. Eating sugar or other simple carbohydrates helps temporarily because they stimulate serotonin release. If you are insulin resistant your body is still making insulin but the cells do not respond to it you may also develop persistent food cravings.
Avatar n tn i take my medication as prescribed and was told to LIMIT sugar and carbohydrate intake.my sugar is usually 65-70 when i first wake up and stays stable thoughout the day (i don't check it if i don't feel sick). lately, for the past few months anyway, if i eat anything sweet at all, ex: sugar in my coffee is the usual culprit, about an hour late my sugar drops to around 40 and i can barely make it to the fridge to get OJ. why is this suddenly happening?

Avatar n tn Hi, I was told last year that my blood sugar was low so i was given a meter. I notice that when I wake up in the morning its about 90 but when I eat toast I get very hungry and shaky around noon. When I take my blood it 50 to 60. Is the bread causing my blood sugar to drop?
1773108 tn?1314158067 s hide sugar by replacing refined sugar as cane sugar, corn syrup, aguave sugar, etc. Sugar listed under carbohydrates is nasty; every 7 grams equals one HEAPING Tablespoon of refined sugar. ● Eat foods made with whole grains, lean meats, poultry [minus skin], and seafood. Substitute milk [has 8 grams + of sugar per glass] with almond/soy/hemp unsweetened no sugar milk. Eat more vegetables. Body weight - ● Maintain normal body weight. The BMI should be <27.
Avatar n tn I would check out that link to make sure there is some hard science to back it up, because cancer does like estrogen and a large load of blood glucose does cause a temporary insulin surge. I would guess unrefined sugar and most carbohydrate foods probably cause a bit less of a glucose load in the bloodstream and therefore less of an insulin surge than refined sugar products, and my guess is that there should be a lot of information out there in the diabetes literature.
1266263 tn?1270153368 When you deplete your glycogen stores, as can happen during repeated days of hard training and a low carbohydrate diet, you feel overwhelmingly exhausted. Eating high carbohydrate foods like cereal, pancakes, bread, fruit, vegetables, potato, pasta on a daily basis can help you train harder and compete better. All the best.
Avatar f tn I think the question should also be asked, how much other sugar are you consuming? Eat dessert? Cook with sugar? Eat refined flour? Odwalla and Cliff Bars aren't the worst thing you can eat, they're much cleaner than most similar products, but overdoing it is questionable. Cliff bars were invented for off road cyclists who were expending a lot of energy and burning it quickly. Are you?
Avatar f tn Eating low carbohydrate foods and exercising at least 3x a week for at least 30 minutes has been shown to help with weight loss. Giving up sugar also helps.
Avatar m tn I have tried various types of drinks in an effort to find one that has a minimal adverse effect on my sugar levels. Can anyone advise me. I have tried many times to stop drinkig sometimes giving up for up to one year but always end up back on the drink.
