Hello,Im a male taking Avodart for hair loss but im worried,by what the information is regarding pregnancy.
My question is can i still try to conceive while im taking avodart.
How will this medication effect my sperm count and also will my sperm have this medicine in them.
Will it cause a birth defect if I should get my girlfriend pregnant.
Also if we try for a child how long will it take for the tablets to be out of my stysem

When I developed gynecomastia (which is minor and I ignore) I lowered the dose of AVODART to one twice a week which is 8/month (from 15/month). AVODART has a long half life. Will 8/month still work? I wrote to GLaxo who make Avodart and they said what you said "ask your physician". My physician is very busy and I don't want to waste his time. My next appointment is in June and I will ask at that time if I don't have an answer by then.
Please help me understand! I have just been diagnosed with hypo and am taking levo. 42 yr old woman. I have all the classic symptoms like insomnia, weight gain, intolerance to cold, extremely sore breasts amongst several others. However the one I fear the most is the hair loss!! At this point I haven't noticed any loss, just a dryer texture and a bit of lack luster. I have searched everywhere but cannot find an answer to my question! Does EVERYONE who is hypo lose hair???

I asked my urologist to consider putting me on the standard dosage of Depo Testosterone, strictly as an exogenous source of free testosterone, due to malaise, fatigue, etc. He was reluctant, but did so anyway. To summarize, I'm taking a daily dose of .05 mg of Avodart and a minimal dose of Depo Testosterone once per month. My question: Why does it feel as though my prostatic urethra is ON FIRE? The pain been persistent for over three years.
BACK IN DECEMBER WE INCREASED MY DOSAGE, AND MY HAIR HAS BEGUN TO FALL OUT AT AN ENORMOUS RATE. I NOTIFIED MY DOCTOR, SO WE SCHEDULED TO HAVE MY LEVELS CHECKED AGAIN. I AM WAITING FOR MY RESULTS, BUT MT DOCTOR HAS GONE OUT OF TOWN AND NOW I'M BEGINING TO GET REALLY WORRRIED BECAUSE MY HAIR IS STILL FALLING OUT, SO NOW I HAVE STOPPED TAKING MY MEDS FOR THE LAST 3 DAYS. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING, AND SHOULD I STAY OFF THE MEDS FOR NOW??? I HAVE AN UNDERACTIVE THYROID..

Propose that your partner try Avodart. I think it really helps with prostate enlargement. That is what the television commercials say anyhow.
Unfortunately it also can cause a large reduction in semen production.
AND women wanting to become pregnant should NEVER touch the pill as it can cause birth defects if they are exposed at all to it.
You can Google Avodart read all of this yourself from a variety of sites, including Avodart's manufacturer.
I took it for a week (I had googled it beforehand and saw that hair loss can be a side effect) and after a week my hair started to come out in alarming quantities! I stopped right away. But it has been over 4 weeks and still my hair is falling out. My doctor insists that DHEA would not cause hair loss but I've read many posts where it is implicated. He's re-testing me to see where my TSH and other levels are.
It would be very helpful if we could have a look at your thyroid related test results from the time you were feeling good, and also from the time when you dosage was reduced. You also need to know your test results from Aug. It is a good idea to always get a copy of blood test results and write on there how you were feeling at the time, and your med and supplement dosages. Those reports are a very useful history for future reference.
I would agree that the hair loss is not a side effect but inadequate levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T4 and Free T3, along with likely low levels of ferritin, which is a form of iron.
It appears that your doctor tested for Free T4, but Total T3. Total T3 is not very useful compared to Free T3. Scientific studies have shown that hypo symptoms correlate best with Free T3, and not Free T4 or TSH.
What is normal time to stay Avodart ? The doc give enough for 3 weeks but I would think I would need to stay on for longer than that. I have had no side effects as I know of and I believe it has helped. How long has others stayed on this ? Thanks for any help.
I'm 68 years old and have had Cataracts for over 2 years. I've been taking Avodart for over a year. Should I stop taking Avodart and wait awhile before cataract surgery or will the informed Dr be able to work with my eyes? I've never taken Flomax and have heard the warnings from the commercial and read about Flomax. I'm concerned about any complications.
I'm also pretty active. Can I still swim after surgery and what are the chances of the lens shifting or coming loose?
m hoping the increased dosage of Levoxyl will stop my hair loss. I have been taking 1200 mg of calcium vitamins and a multivitamin and evening primrose oil vitamins(2000 mg) (which I heard would help hair loss). Is there anything I should be doing to help prevent continued hair loss? Any suggestions would very much appreciated.
Even getting older an cause it, smoking, taking various medications (not just avodart), gaining weight, etc. Do you find you also have erectile dysfunction? Avodart, unfortunately, is associated with these side effects. It's unclear though how long they will last. What does your doctor say? What prompted starting the med? Your psa looks pretty good.
80mg is a high dosage of beta blocker, and the max recommended for atenolol in 100mg. Maybe you could ask your gp to try a more powerful reacting beta blocker, one which requires much less dosage with the same effect. Bisoprolol fumrate is a powerful beta blocker and most people take 1.25mg - 20mg.
You have to start on a low dose and gradually increase it over a few weeks until you find the right level. If you suddenly jump in at 20mg, your heart could start to pump too slowly.
Hi everyone. I'm scheduled for PT on 4-14-10 (nodule susp for pap) and have read lots of frightening stories about
hair loss due to thyroid conditions and some meds used to treat hypo patients. I am currently on 50mcg levothyroxine. I started it 1-20-10 and have so far had not had any extra shedding/thinning. My questions are - if I was going to have hair thinning as a side effect of the levo, would it have most likely already started? Or is it noticed more with higher doses?
Hair loss is a symptom of hypo. Also, hair loss is reactive, so hair loss today may reflect your thyroid hormone levels several months ago more than those of today. Furthermore, it can be one of the last symptoms to go away.
If either of you has recent labs to post, please do, and we'll tell you what we see. Include reference ranges as they vary lab to lab and have to come from your own lab report. Also, tell us about any other remaining hypo symptoms you might have.
