Common Questions and Answers about Antihistamine or decongestant

antihistamine

Avatar m tn Hi, I actually get that sometimes ... in my case I think it's sinus pressure causing it but not pain .. inmflammation around the eye. But I'm not a doctor. My Doctor suggested a decongestant which helps a lot as well as o-t-c antihistamine eye drops which used along with a preservative eye drop to add moisture back in helps a lot. Maybe your doctor will let you try something like GenTeal eye drops to help moisturize them and see if that helps alone ..
Avatar n tn If ok with your doctor, have you tried an antihistamine/decongestant at night before bed .. sometimes what you describe may be post nasal drip but I'm not a doctor .. just my immediate thoughts reading your post. The decongestant may help dry things up. A sinus infection can do similar with the drip, too. The drip can also cause asthma-like symtpoms (bronchiospasms) to happen from the irritation. Just some thoughts to ask your doctor. WELCOME to our community!
Avatar f tn Pretty much, yyou can't take anything with a decongestant. Normal, regular antihistamine should be fine.
Avatar f tn Since it is a cold symptom reliever, not an antihistamine, if it is the decongestant helping, you might want to call your doctor's office and ask about decongestants/expectorants that are safe. Also, the best suggestion I received during my last pregnancy when it came to congestion was to get a humidifier. Ours was only a $20-30 one from Walgreens but was a life-saver!
268356 tn?1236002604 Doc called earlier this am and said no to the theraflu. But said that taking an antihistamine, a decongestant, and tylenol should have about the same effect. So, I took a benadryl, a sudafed, and a tylenol, but that's just not really helping either. I think I know the culprit though. I have a new neighbor that is about an 1/8th of a mile down the road from me. The old neighbors used their barn to store stuff in and the new ones are using it to smoke tobacco.

Antihistamine like benadryl works by blocking your immune system's response to the allergen. Symptoms can also be relieved by using a nasal spray that contains corticosteroids. Corticosteroids work by helping to reduce inflammation and congestion.

Allergies themselves can cause much headaches because the sinus system in the areas behind the forehead, nose, and eyes are clogged up with fluid. Ask your doc for a safe allergy treatment. For myself, I sometimes use a decongestant for the bad allergy headaches.
1711722 tn?1356487554 Nyquil is pretty much an antihistamine, a decongestant, a pain reliever like tylenol and of course alcohol. I take Allegra D (an antihistamine and decongestant) and motrin because I cannot take tylenol. I have had a cold or a mild version of the flu at different times since starting tx (am better now). I wouldn't take anything without talking to your doctor but the allegra d was deemed ok by my dr and it is now OTC. I know it is ok with peg+riba+ and incivek.
Avatar f tn After several of these headaches, starting about 10 years ago, I finally found that Benedryl with a decongestant takes care of it. However, the longer I wait to take the Benedryl the longer it takes to get it under control. So then it radiates to the back of my head and into my shoulder. I have noticed a severe change in weather or altitude is a major culprit. I thought it was allergies due to the fact that I get alot of them in the spring even though I'm taking Zyrtec and Singulair.
Avatar f tn Hello, The most common way to get rid of a stuffy nose is to use an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant combined with an anti-inflammatory analgesic (pain reliever) like Ibuprofen. However, you should not use decongestants for more than 5-7 days at a time. This is because they can only provide short-term relief for catarrh, and using them for any longer can make your symptoms worse.. Avoid indigestible, spicy, foods and meats. Eat simply of wholesome food.

Avatar m tn ve never had my ear hurt as bad as it did or had that amount of temporary hearing loss, so it was quiet startling at the time. Thanks!
Avatar m tn If you can afford to (sort of pricey at $20 for a 2 week supply) I would get Claritin-D or Allegra-D. They have an antihistamine as well as a decongestant. You have to get them from a pharmacist (behind the counter) and show your ID. I take Claritin-D daily for the same symptoms you have. I get bad headaches at night and my nose gets stuffed, with sneezing and runny eyes. Since starting Claritin-D, I no longer have that problem unless it wears off before I go to bed.
Avatar m tn I would ask your physician to prescribe a decongestant and/or another antihistamine, i.e. Sudafed PE and/or Astelin Nasal Spray if the Nasonex isn't working.

Avatar m tn Make sure that the antihistamine you're taking doesn't have a decongestant included. I've taken Zyrtec D prior to bed a few times and stared at the ceiling for hours.
