Amitiza not working

Common Questions and Answers about Amitiza not working

329994 tn?1301666848 Last summer I had intestinal surgery (a foot of small instestine removed) and it has just gotten worse over time.I eat very little and get bloated immediately. Have not gone to the bathroom on my own for 2 years. I went online and did not like the side effects of this medication or the reports written by real people. I am hoping that someone on here has taken it and can tell me what they think. I am mostly concerned about the side effects of chest pain and shortness of breath.
Avatar n tn In the last two weeks I have not been able to have a BM. My doctor gave me some samples of amitiza 24 mcg. I've been taken them 2 per day for the last 4 days - One at night and another in the A.M. With the 1st tablet I had a BM. I have not had another BM since. It doesn't seem that I'm having any normal digestive sounds or movements. I don't even have the urge to have a BM. This has only been happening to me for the last couple of weeks.
Avatar f tn In addition to this, the pain has not subsided. The pain is fairly persistent and does not leave me. I am not 100% positive that it is even connected to my bowel movements, or if that was just a convenient explanation for doctors, knowing my constipation. It is noteworthy to mention that I have been on opiates for 7 years, and just started having these symptoms 8 or 9 months ago. The pain itself is a dull ache.
Avatar f tn i still feel a few pins and needle left abdomen. Nothing works, not even amitiza, 24 mcg, or milk of magnesia. Is there anything else to try to relieve myself? Thanks. This discussion is related to Intestinal Paralysis.
Avatar f tn If you do not get good results from Linzess, especially if it is too strong, ask to try Amitiza instead. It has been out longer and is safer. These drugs are for constipation. I would strongly suggest you add magnesium citrate every morning at 500 mg. You are probably deficient. Most people are because our soil is no longer full of it like it should be. Therefore the crops don't have the magnesium we need.
Avatar n tn It started without any warning and continues. Sitz marker abnormal as all markers were still present; no obstructions seen. Given amitiza; works well enough, but have heard others have much better success with it. Twice during the night I have had loss of bowel and bladder control and did not know it until I awoke the next morning. MRI's of lumbar and thoracic read as nothing of note. Where do I go from here? I want a diagnosis, not a bunch of pills thrown at me and a shoulder shrug.
1168718 tn?1464987135 My doctor said it's a combination of the MS and the medication... That sure doesn't help much... He put me on Amitiza which is for IBS but I can't tell that it's helped much... He did tell me today to up my dose so we will see how that goes... I'm sure I didn't give you any comfort in your question and for that I am sorry...What are some of the things you do for it? I take stool softeners, laxatives, enemas, and what ever else I can find but it doesn't seem to matter...
Avatar m tn He put me on Amitiza and laxitives taken anal. He said my Intestines were still sleeping and not working correctly. This was 36 hrs ago. Since taking the meds I have had numerous episodes of diarherra. My stomach is still extended, i have very little apeptite and also several times a day I think I need to have a BM and all that comes out is stuff that looks like tissue. What should I do? My HIV doctor is my Internal MD.
1704915 tn?1357604854 And I am a candidate for this surgery because my small intestine is still working. That is another reason he had me do these xrays. Not only to see if my large intestine was working but to also see that the small intestine was working. He did say that a majority of the people who have this surgery live happier lives. He did say it is a major surgery though and that with every major surgery there are complications etc.
Avatar f tn I went to my family doctor Wednesday for a rash on my chin that will not go away. She put me on a cream to use for 10 days. I had blood work done, a urine test< was normal. I don't know the results of the blood work yet. I talked with her about being checked for my risk of having heart disease since it is a big thing on both sides of my family.
Avatar n tn Hi there, I am 33 and about 5 years ago I was working out hard and doing a lot of sit ups and all the sudden in one week I had a herpes out break (first time ever but impossible since I was not active for over a year), a prostate infection (could not urinate at all, and severe constipation along with leg pain.
Avatar f tn Could this be more of a general muscle issue since stomach and colon muscles are not working? I started domperidone for the stomach digestion earlier this week and so far no results. I was on amitiza & mirilax (combined each 3 times per day) and no results. Laxatives dont do it. Someone mentioned getting tested for celiac. Just looking for suggestions. Is this a neurological thing?
Avatar f tn And I can't stop worrying about what's going to happen next. I worry a lot. And I just need some help with working with my anxiety to calm it down a lot. It's more of a bother than anything else. I mean not being able to go eat with friends or simply watching a movie at the theater. Life is rough. I need help!
Avatar n tn The GI doc put me on Amitiza but did not help so today (a week after my colonoscopy) she took me off Amitiza and started me on 3 Metamucil tablets every morning and 1 Colace, then 1 Colace each night as well. I'm waiting to see what happens next...good luck to you.
Avatar n tn For 2 years now i have have very little if any at all urge to have a bowel movement. I do not have incontinence though... my body just wont go! So for the last 1.5 yrs i dealt with it and then in the last few months started using suppositories for relief. If i do get an urge to go it is a very distant feeling, very faint. I have had ultrasounds, xrays, colonoscopy and an MRI. they are trying to say it is pelvic floor dysfunction but i don't have the pain involved with that.
Avatar f tn Then it stopped working and I was put on an increased dosed of Miralax and Amitiza. That worked ok, without the cramping, until it also stopped working. For the most part, the doctor said, there is nothing else we can do. There are no miracle diets, no meds, no suggestions, nothing. So everytime I called the office crying because I could not bear the pain associated with not using the bathroom, all I got was "take the whole bottle of miralax and do a clensing".
Avatar m tn after that nothing happend everything went well 2 weeks later i got her to come to my house and we end up in the same scenario oral sex and 1 minute unprotected sex and stopped because again we did not have condoms ( no ejaculation again) so i went and clean my self right away since im not circumsized .. well i did not think anything since she does not do drugs drink smokes neither its a party person .. but she had a very crappy bf who probably cheated on her ...

Avatar n tn They come in all shapes and sized. They bleed. They happen from pushing. I took Amitiza and lots of laxatives, still could not go. But oddly I mixed them all together and they started working. I don't take Amitiza now just a mix of laxatives and Fiber. I was also mixing in Metamucil Powder but started to get too much bloating so I just cut that one out. Also cut back on Citrucel. I take now all mixed together. I had to step it up to 3 times a day now.
Avatar f tn I think it will take some time to see if it is really working as I was on vacation and out of my daily routine starting the Amitiza. This morning, my stomach isn't doing well and I'm having pain again. I'm not really sure where or what to do next. I started doing a web search for IBS food plans as the doc offered nothing in terms of diet and foods to avoid. The pattern with food upsetting my stomach and colon is so inconsistent I can't come up with a good plan on my own.
Avatar f tn Fortunately my neuro sent me to a great GI. He told me Amitiza (given to me by my GP) was probably not the best and I was relieved because it made me crampy. I take Citrucel and Miralax, both in powder form and both over the counter. I'm doing much, much better. Please keep trying get someone to listen. If you really can't see your GI, maybe you could call DO and see if he'll let you try Citrucel and Miralax. Good luck sweetheart. I'll be praying also....
Avatar f tn Most people would never believe how much it hurts/ is aggravating to not go. I'm sorry you have health problems, but it helps to know that I'm not the only one.
Avatar f tn I can speculate on the constipation, but i dont know much about the other symptoms. With that said, what is your diet like? Not sure if you are American or not, but the average American diet is pretty damn awful. Not enough fiber, too much red meat, not enough fruits and veggies, too much fast foods. all of this will wreak havoc on your digestive system over time. if this is at all you, slowly start to change your diet. Add more fruits and veggies, maybe a fiber supplement.
Avatar m tn Hi, Im 22yr old female. Ive been suffering from chronic constipation for approx 6 years now. I was first diagnosed with IBS but that doesn seem to be the case.. no medication or laxative have ever worked. I went for a colonoscopy last year, after taking movicol for 4 days prior and the prep to clean out the colon before the procedure, not much came out & there was still waste in the colon. Specialist reckons I have a slow moving colon, meaning it doesn push stuff out quick enough.
Avatar f tn I only get constipation relief by doing warm water enemas every other day. Amitiza, zelnorm, mirilax, cristolase, etc. never worked. They even combined amitiza and mirilax and the bloating was so unbelieveable that people thought I was pregnant. Is this neurological? Just looking for some new eyes to look at the situation. I also had blood workup for thyroid and that was negative. Think that is all they did though.
Avatar m tn The doctors cannot figure out why I am now suffering from severe, chronic constipation. The Amitiza, Miralax and Citracel aren't working, so the doctor told me to add milk of magnesia to my regimen. All of the GI doctors in my area and surrounding areas cannot fit me in for 3-8 weeks. What do I do? Will I suffer from this forever? I sometimes feel the urge to go, but the stools are never near the rectum, and pushing does not move my stools down towards the rectum.
1926402 tn?1322954664 It can be watery diarrhea, hard or soft, black, greenish tint, or brown, and sometimes is accompanied with blood. I've been on SEVERAL medications over the years to inlcude surfak, miralax, zelnorm, amitiza, amitryptiline, citrucel, effexor, elavil, prilosec, tagament, and reglan. I have been tested for celiac's disease. Certain foods will trigger an episode ... lactose, greasy foods, caffeine, most fast foods. When I get frusterated or upset, it triggers pain.
988694 tn?1332363079 I was advised not to do dairy free diet, until I know more or less if gluten free is working, but after three weeks I honestly do not know. I feel though that I have less gravings for bread, pasta, rice and potatoes and some sweets, which is good. I was thinking about going dairy free later, I have to talk to my nutritionist and see what she thinks about it...I feel also bad when I have a yogurt and ice cream above all.
Avatar f tn I stuck with it for about 6months, but it is too expensive to not really be working so I stopped recently. Now, my doctor has me taking Colace everyday. Does anyone have any ideas? Can anyone help me? What should I do next? My doctor wants me to have a camera endoscopy, but I don't know if my insurance will cover it. I feel like the solution must be more simple than that because since all these tests have come back negative, how could it be that serious?
